Police detained two in Assam woman's death case who vanished from Delhi after exam

India Today11-06-2025
The body of 26-year-old Rosmita Hojai from Assam's Dima Hasao district was found on Tuesday along the banks of a river in Uttarakhand's Pauri Garhwal district. The local police have detained two men from Haryana, Hemant Sharma from Mahendragarh and Pankaj Kokar from Rohtak, for questioning. Her body has been sent for post-mortem, and police are probing what led to her tragic end. She had been missing since June 5, the day after she left home for Delhi to appear for a Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) examination. Rosmita, who previously studied engineering in Haryana and was preparing for the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) exams in Guwahati, had spoken to her family on June 4 to inform them about her travel.advertisementBut what worried them was a call the next day, where she suddenly said she was returning by train, something they found unusual and out of character. When she didn't come back and calls went unanswered, panic set in. Days later, her lifeless body was found in Uttarakhand, far from where she was supposed to be.
The news has sent shockwaves through the Northeast, especially among student communities. The All Dimasa Students Union (ADSU) has called for a thorough investigation and voiced concerns over the safety of Northeastern students studying or travelling outside the region.'We are devastated,' said ADSU leader Uttam Langthasa. 'Rosmita was just trying to build her future. She had dreams. She had informed her family about her journey and suddenly she was gone. Now her body has been found, showing signs of decomposition. Two young men have been picked up by the police, but that's not enough. We want justice. And we want answers.'advertisementLangthasa confirmed that Rosmita's family has already travelled to Uttarakhand. He urged the Assam government to extend support and help bring her body home. 'We also request all students from the Northeast to always inform their parents and not hide their whereabouts. It's a matter of safety.'This tragedy comes at a particularly tense moment. Just recently, the Northeast was unfairly dragged into controversy during the Meghalaya honeymoon murder case involving an Indore couple, where people from the region were blamed prematurely before facts were even established. That case highlighted how easily the Northeast becomes a target in national discourse. And now, the loss of a young woman from Assam only adds to the grief and frustration.'This isn't the first time something like this has happened,' Langthasa said. 'But it has to be the last. We are tired of losing our people under such mysterious and painful circumstances. The government must act, and it must act now.'Trending Reel

Indian Railways Introduce Multi-Layered Security To Curb Cheating In Recruitment Exam

Last Updated: An official statement indicated that this major initiative aims to maintain integrity and ensure fairness by achieving a 'zero cheating cases' record for the June 2025 RRB exams. The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) is implementing stricter anti-fraud measures, which include mandatory face recognition and the extensive use of mobile jammers at all its exam centres throughout India, reported Mint. The move aims to uphold integrity and ensure fairness by achieving a 'zero cheating cases" record for the June 2025 RRB exams, according to an official statement. An advanced Aadhar e-KYC-based photo validation system will be introduced that will allow real-time face matching during the registration process on exam day. Photographs obtained directly from the candidate's Aadhar e-KYC will be compared with the images captured during the initial application submission and again at the exam centre registration by the relevant authorities, the report added. This multi-layered verification process aims to incorporate an additional 'post-exam scrutiny" layer, rendering impersonation virtually impossible, it stated. Alongside biometric security, the RRB will deploy mobile jammers at all 7,000 exam centres nationwide. The goal of the process is to eliminate any attempts at cheating through electronic devices such as mobile phones, which have posed significant challenges in conducting large-scale examinations. These reforms were implemented four months after the Railway Ministry decided to assign the responsibility of conducting exams to the RRB. This decision came after the CBI arrested 26 railway officials in Uttar Pradesh's Mughal Sarai for allegedly leaking exam papers. Meanwhile, the Railway Ministry has released the RRB Exam Calendar 2025. Some of the top recruitment exams that the RRB conducts include RRB Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP), RRB Junior Engineer (JE), RRB NTPC, RRB Technician, RRB Group D, Paramedical Staff and Ministerial and Isolated Categories. This official calendar sets the timeline for evaluating vacancies, uploading them to OIRMS (Online Indent and Recruitment Management System) and issuing recruitment notifications (CEN). As per the calendar, the NTPC Graduate (Level 4,5,6), NTPC Under Graduate (Level 2,3), Junior Engineer, Depot Material Superintendent, Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant, Paramedical Category vacancy assessment deadline is September 30. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Under 'attack', ULFA(I) seeks new hideouts

With militant outfit , United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) camps along the Indo-Myanmar border under attack by the Indian Army resulting in severe casualties, the outfit is on the look for new hideouts. Sources in the security agencies hinted that the outfit's chief Paresh Baruah is warming up to Bangladesh . ULFA (Independent) had claimed that at least three senior soldiers were killed, and 19 others injured after the Indian Army launched a massive operation along the Indo-Myanmar border. The Army, however, claimed that it had not carried out any such operation. Defence sources said, "no inputs with the Indian Army on such operation." ULFA (Independent), also known as the anti-talk faction of ULFA, in a statement stated, "The Indian Army had launched drone attacks between Longwa in Indo -Myanmar border near Nagaland and Pangsau Pass along the international border near Arunachal Pradesh. The attack took place between 2 am to 4 am on Sunday. The outfit claimed that there was another attack later in the day on Sunday. The mobile camps of the banned outfit and RPF/PLA camps were affected severely as the Indian forces have dropped about 150 bombs in the entire area using drones made in Israel and France". Sources in the Intelligence agencies said, "Myanmar was the prime base of ULFA ever since 2012 when the Bangladesh government flushed out rebels. Even their bases in Bhutan were dismantled by India's security forces, along with the Bhutanese army, in 2003. However, the region where the Northeastern rebels are based in Myanmar is in turmoil owing to internal feud making it difficult for the rebels to stay there." Sources said, "ULFA chief Paresh Baruah is warming up to Bangladesh. Baruah is shuttling between the jungles of Yunnan province in China and Myanmar. Last year, the Bangladesh High Court reduced the death sentence of Paresh Baruah to life imprisonment in the 2004 Chattogram arms smuggling case." Sources in the Assam police said: "There have been feelers following the strike on bases. ULFA might carry out retaliatory strike or sabotage activities in the run-up to Independence Day celebrations in Assam."

Indian Railways tightens recruitment exam security, introduces facial recognition and jammers to curb cheating

The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) is rolling out advanced anti-fraud measures, which include compulsory face recognition and widespread mobile jammer deployment across all its exam centres in India. An official statement said this significant move aims to uphold integrity and ensure fairness by achieving a 'zero cheating cases' record in the upcoming June 2025 RRB exams. The target will be achieved through a sophisticated Aadhar e-KYC-based photo validation system. This technology will enable real-time face matching during the registration process on exam day. The photographs fetched directly from the candidate's Aadhar e-KYC will be matched with the images captured during the initial application submission and again at the exam centre registration by the concerned authorities. This multi-layered verification aims to add an extra 'post-exam scrutiny' layer, making impersonation virtually impossible. To complement the biometric security, the RRB is also set to implement 100 per cent mobile jammer deployment across 7000 exam exam centers throughout the country. This provision is designed to completely eliminate any attempts of cheating through electronic devices such as mobile phones, which has posed a massive challenge in conducting large-scale examinations. The jamming strategy signals a firm commitment to create a fair testing environment where only merit will be considered to select the deserving candidates. This process, along with a set of other reforms released by the center will mark a new era in Railway recruitment, which will be transparent, tech-driven, inclusive, and time-bound, as envisioned by the technocrat Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, according to the statement. This reform was rolled out four months after the Railway Ministry decided to hand over the responsibility of conducting exams to the RRB. This followed the CBI's arrest of 26 railway officials in Uttar Pradesh's Mughal Sarai for allegedly leaking exam papers. Until then, the zonal and divisional railway offices conducted these exams independently, but reports of corruption and cheating were increasing. The Railway Board, after a high-level meeting, announced that all future promotion exams would be conducted through a computer-based test (CBT)
