Critics called Suniel Shetty a ‘doorknob' after his debut film; was told to ‘sell idlis and vadas' at his family restaurant: ‘That business ran my house'

Despite having no prior connection to Bollywood, Suniel Shetty found his way into show business and eventually became a big star. Since his debut in director Deepak Anand's Balwaan (1992), where he starred alongside Divya Bharti, Suniel's career has seen both soaring highs and steep lows. Yet, even after three decades, he remains active in Bollywood and played notable roles in two films — Nadaaniyan and Kesari Veer — in 2025 alone.
However, the actor's journey in the industry has been far from easy. Suniel recently recalled the 'unfair' criticism he received for his performance in Balwaan. He shared that critics went so far as to call him a 'doorknob' and even suggested he return to working at his father's restaurant, selling idlis and vadas. Still, he emphasised that he has no shame in admitting his father's background in the restaurant business, proudly stating that it was how their family made a living.

'They trashed me as a performer and labelled me a 'doorknob' in their reviews. Some even suggested I go sell idlis and vadas at our family restaurant. They treated selling idli-vadas as something derogatory. But that family business ran my house. In fact, it's because of that background that even today, I feel no shame in doing any kind of work. I am not embarrassed to do anything, particularly physical labour. I don't even think twice while opening a door for someone or saying 'thank you' or 'sorry'. It's because of that idli-vada upbringing that I am like this now,' he shared during a chat with The Lallantop.
Last year, the Hera Pheri actor had opened up about how his father ran away from home in Mangalore at the age of nine, took up menial jobs, started his own restaurant and eventually rose through the ranks through sheer hard work. 'My dad ran away and came to Mumbai as a child. He didn't have a father, but he had three sisters. He found work in a South Indian restaurant at age nine, because that's the thing about our community, we support each other. His first job was cleaning tables. He was so little, he would have to make four rounds of the table just to clean all sides. He would sleep in a sack meant for rice,' he shared during a conversation with comedian Bharti Singh and her husband Haarsh Limbachiyaa on their podcast.
He added, 'His boss bought three buildings, and dad was eventually asked to manage them. When the boss retired, dad bought all three buildings. Today, I still have all three buildings. And that's where our journey began.'

Tamannaah on Aaj Ki Raat's fame: Mothers tell me toddlers eat listening to the song

Actor Tammannah Bhatia exclusively spoke to The Lallantop in an exclusive interview about her dance number 'Aaj Ki Raat' from 'Stree 2' and the recognition that came with it. She also recalled how several mothers told her that their toddlers eat their food only after they listen to the hit 'Baahubali' actor said, "I can't tell you the number of mothers that have called me and said, 'My child will eat food only if he hears 'Aaj Ki Raat'. Because bacche apne diaper mein aise aise hil rahe hote hai (Because kids in their diaper move)."advertisement"Mummiyo ka concern hai ki bacche khana kha rahe hai ya nahi? Priorities hote hai. Ek aadh saal mein unko kaunse lyrics samajh mein aayenge (Mothers' concerns are whether their kids are eating properly or not. There are priorities. What lyrics will they understand at the age of one)? There is music. We forget films, we remember the songs. It's the fact," she added. The actor was also asked by an audience member how she feels when she is recognised for her dance numbers over her films. To which, she responded, "I get a lot of love for different work. As an actor, the reality of the matter is aapka jo aakhiri kaam hota hai, log aapko ussi se yaad karte hai (People remember you from your last work). Incidentally, that was my last work. But before that, I had done 100 films. People might not about that as much. But I know I am doing more films and I will do more films.""Maybe it is a way for me to understand that I need to work on myself, choose more powerful characters and do more profound films. I take it as a learning," she 35-year-old said the work of an actor is to work and leave the rest to the audience. "I feel ek artist ka kaam hota hai kaam karna aur wo logo me chodh dena. Agar logo ne kisi cheez ko Zada notice kiya hai aur kisi cheez ko kam notice kiya hai, isme logo ki koi mistake nahi hai. (I feel that the job of an artist is to do his work and then to make people aware of it. If people have noticed something more or have noticed something less, then it is not the fault of the people), she stated. Bhatia also mentioned how she receives a lot of love for her performance in 'Babli Bouncer'. "Bahut se log aate hai aur bolte hai humne film dekhi aur hume bahut pasand hai, aapka kirdaar usme bahut achha hai (Many people come and say we have seen the film, and we liked it very much, your character is very good in it)," she shared.'Babli Bouncer' premiered on JioHotstar in September 2022. In the film, Bhatia played the role of a street-smart woman who becomes a bouncer at a nightclub.'Aaj Ki Raat', on the other hand, continues to be a chartbuster. The dance number from the horror comedy film 'Stree 2' has amassed over 700 million views on YouTube.- Ends

Tamannaah Bhatia says she hates that Vijay Sethupathi is ‘so good': ‘He's such a nonchalant, relaxed, and chill person'

Tamanaah Bhatia is one of the rare actors who're straddling both Hindi cinema and the South Indian film industry with aplomb. She's worked with the likes of Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn in Bollywood, to Prabhas and Vijay Sethupathi down South. While taking about her male co-stars, she explained why she refers to some as 'sir' and some just by their names. 'I don't know, maybe because I met Ajay when I was much younger. And I have a memory of him when I was young,' said Tamannaah, explaining why she refers to Devgn as 'Ajay sir' instead of by his first name only. Tamannaah was cast opposite Devgn in Sajid Khan's 2013 action comedy Himmatwala, when she was in her early 20s. 'In my head, I know him for a very long time. So I call him 'sir' because I know him from when I was young,' Tamannaah added in the interview with The Lallantop. She'll be seen reuniting with Ajay Devgn in Jagan Shakti's Ranger, set in the land of animal poaching, and also starring Sanjay Dutt. Tamanaah Bhatia also talked about working with Vijay Sethupathi in Seenu Ramaswamy's 2016 Tamil slice-of-life film Dharma Durai. 'It's one of my really, really good works, a really sensitive work. It's a very simple story, but very well told. Vijay Sethupathi has done so many amazing, amazing characters, but he's another person who's very good. I hate it he's so good,' confessed Tamannaah. 'He's also such a nonchalant, relaxed, and chill person. I think I love that about him. He's the epitome of cool,' added Tamannaah. She agreed that his effortless acting style is reminiscent of the late actor Irrfan Khan. 'He's damn cool, very easy to work with. In fact, when I did Dharam Durai, I think there was a shift in my performances because I'm also learning from my co-stars. I'm constantly watching different people perform and learning from them. Vijay Sethupathi is one person I learnt that cool and calm approach from in performances,' added the actor. Tamannaah Bhatia made her acting debut 20 years ago with the 2005 romantic film Chand Sa Roshan Chehra. The same year, she made her Telugu acting debut opposite Manoj Manchu in the action film Sree. The next year, she also made her Tamil acting debut opposite Ravi Krishna in the 2006 romantic crime thriller Kedi. She's best known for her turn in SS Rajamouli's blockbuster action fantasy franchise Baahubali.
