Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC) Sabah branch, led by President Datuk Dexter Lau Wei Dick, attended the MCCC National Annual General Meeting (AGM) and the 14th National Council Election, here, on June 13-14. Demonstrating its commitment to the core mission of 'connecting resources, building platforms, and expanding opportunities', the Sabah delegation hosted a high-level business networking dinner on June 13 at Calia, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur.

Spearheaded and coordinated by Public Relations Officer Edmund Goh Chuen Sheng, the networking dinner attracted a gathering of entrepreneurs, corporate elites, investors, and prominent figures from various industries and the cultural sector across Malaysia. Guests engaged in in-depth conversations on capital synergy, brand collaboration, international expansion, and industrial trends – laying a solid foundation for future cross-industry and interstate partnerships. Following the dinner, the delegation attended the official welcome banquet hosted by the national chamber at Chuai Heng Banquet Hall, further strengthening relationships with chamber counterparts from other states and boosting Sabah's visibility on the national stage. On June 14, the delegation participated in the AGM held at Wisma Huazong, contributing to discussions on constitutional amendments, resolutions, and witnessing the election of the new national council – highlighting Sabah's strong commitment to institutional development and organizational responsibility. According to Goh, the significance of this trip goes far beyond attendance. 'This mission shows that the Sabah Branch is not limited to local activities, but is taking a proactive approach to connect with national resources and partners. 'We have lived up to the state government's expectations by stepping out of our comfort zone to establish new connections with prominent entrepreneurs, including listed companies and those managing major development projects,' he said. 'Throughout this short but intensive engagement, we exchanged valuable insights on business models, economic outlooks, and Sabah's development prospects – sparking opportunities for collaboration that can indirectly spur business growth and job creation in our state. Supporting our members in business expansion has always been a core leadership goal of President Datuk Dexter Lau.' Goh expressed confidence that as the chamber continues to promote regional collaboration and economic dynamism, the State government would support these efforts by appointing capable individuals to work with the chamber. Through combined resources, networks, and dedication, the chamber hopes to build broader international exposure for Sabah's talents, enabling them to gain global experience and knowledge and, ultimately, contribute to the state's development upon their return. He emphasised that the Sabah Branch remains committed to its mission: 'Let the nation see Sabah, believe in Sabah, and collaborate with Sabah.' Through various platforms, the branch will continue to help local businesses broaden their horizons and strengthen their competitiveness. 'Going out,' he said, 'is not just a market strategy – it is a reflection of our belief in cooperation.' In recent years, MCCC Sabah has actively upheld the philosophy of 'promoting cooperation through dialogue, and driving development through cooperation.' By participating in national AGMs, regional forums, and young entrepreneur initiatives, the branch continues to create meaningful and result-driven partnership opportunities. Moving forward, it will remain grounded in practical action to build a solid bridge for Sabah enterprises to connect nationally and expand globally. Standard Chartered sued for US$2.7b over role in 1MDB scandal

KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 — Standard Chartered is being sued for US$2.7 billion (RM11.3 billion) by liquidators tied to Malaysia's scandal-hit 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) fund, who allege the bank facilitated the laundering of billions in misappropriated public money. Bloomberg reported today that the legal action, filed in Singapore, accuses the UK-based lender of enabling more than 100 intrabank transfers between 2009 and 2013 that helped obscure the trail of stolen funds. The claimants said the transactions resulted in losses exceeding US$2.7 billion, along with S$20 million in Malaysian public funds. The Financial Times (FT) first reported the suit. In response, Standard Chartered said it had not yet received formal legal documents and 'emphatically rejects any claims' made by the 1MDB-linked companies. The bank added that the liquidators had previously described the firms as 'shell companies with no legitimate business,' according to the FT. Standard Chartered was among several financial institutions penalised in the aftermath of the 1MDB affair, which saw billions siphoned from a Malaysian sovereign fund and triggered global investigations. In 2016, Singapore's financial watchdog fined the bank S$5.2 million for anti-money laundering lapses connected to the scandal. The 1MDB saga led to the downfall and subsequent jailing of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and ensnared major global banks, including Goldman Sachs. Authorities in the US, Switzerland and Singapore launched investigations into how the fund's money was misappropriated and moved across borders, often through complex financial networks. The latest lawsuit adds to the long tail of legal and financial fallout tied to one of the world's largest financial frauds.

Zahid: Orang Asli land law amendments in final stages, to be tabled in 2026

PUTRAJAYA, July 1 — The drafting of amendments to the Aboriginal Peoples Act 1954 (Act 134), which involves matters relating to land ownership among the Orang Asli community, is now in its final stages, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said. 'Insya-Allah, it will be finalised by September at the latest and tabled in Parliament in March 2026," said Zahid, who is also Minister of Rural and Regional Development, during the ministry's monthly assembly here today. In March, Ahmad Zahid said that the proposed amendments aim to improve several key areas affecting the Orang Asli, including land issues, infrastructure, education, housing and economic development. He said the Act is set to be amended for the first time in over 70 years, with several aspects under consideration, particularly concerning land or roaming areas, due to disputes between the Orang Asli community, private landowners and state governments. The last amendment to Act 134 was made in 1967, and the Act was reviewed in 1974. Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid also called for the expansion of high-impact agricultural initiatives through the Agrotek Wilayah project under the Central Terengganu Development Authority (Ketengah). He said the smart farming approach for fertigation chili cultivation has the potential to increase national productivity and income levels. 'So far, 16,000 polybags have been planted across four acres of land by four participants. I believe, with proper guidance and appropriate technology, this project has the potential to produce 96,000 kilogrammes of chili with an estimated annual revenue of RM576,000,' he said. In addition, Ahmad Zahid urged Ketengah to spearhead the transformation of Kenyir Lake tourism through the Desa Kirana initiative and position it as an iconic destination contributing to the success of Visit Malaysia Year 2026. 'I also want Kolej Ketengah to move beyond borders and work closely with the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) to enhance the expertise of its instructors, especially in the field of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), so that the quality of education and training can be raised to a higher level,' he added. Ketengah, a statutory body under the Rural and Regional Development Ministry (KKDW), has been in operation for 52 years and has spent RM1.7 billion during that time to implement various programmes and projects aimed at regional development and improving community well-being. — Bernama

Penang still waiting for green light from Transport Ministry for LRT project, says chief minister

GEORGE TOWN, July 1 — The Penang state government is still awaiting the official notice to proceed from the Transport Ministry and MRT Corporation (MRTC) before physical work can begin on the Light Rail Transit (LRT) Mutiara Line project. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state hopes to receive the notice this month. 'Last month, I mentioned one or two months, so this month would be the second. We really hope it can be issued this month,' he said after officiating Penang Transportation Day at Komtar today. He said the notice is crucial to enable SRS Consortium to commence full-scale construction works according to the planned timeline. However, he noted that some preliminary work has already begun on-site, including soil investigation, land acquisition, and compensation for affected landowners. He said the state government has fulfilled its responsibility by handing over all roles related to the LRT project to MRTC. He added that SRS Consortium has also been released from its previous role as the original applicant for the project's implementation. 'The state's relationship with SRS now is only in the context of other components under the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP), but for the LRT project, it has been taken over by MRTC,' he said. He said the main responsibility for the project now lies with the federal government, particularly in issuing the notice to proceed. On traffic management during the LRT construction phase, Chow said it will involve occupying parts of existing roads. 'It is important for contractors to ensure that any occupied road space is replaced by widening the road or using wide areas to maintain the same number of lanes,' he said. He cited the highway construction in Bandar Baru Air Itam, where land adjacent to the site was acquired to ensure two-lane traffic could continue to operate smoothly. Asked about the possibility of congestion charges in Penang, Chow said there are no plans for this at the moment. He acknowledged it may be listed in the PTMP as a potential strategy to address traffic congestion, but the state has yet to consider implementing it. The RM10.5 billion LRT line spans 29.5km, with 21 stations connecting the island's south to the northeast and linking the island to the mainland.
