'Just the way he turned the club around' - ranking Newcastle's best managers

BBC News6 days ago
Welcome to the second part of Lee Clark's top five greatest managers to have managed Newcastle United. At number three is Kevin Keegan. Under 'King Kev's' leadership between 1992 and 1997, Newcastle were promoted to the Premier League and came runners-up in 1996 and 1997."A man who had come in and changed the landscape of the club as a player. then came in and did something crazy as a manager," Clark told BBC Radio Newcastle."The reason he is not in the top two is because he couldn't find that elusive trophy. In 1995, we got close - we got ridiculously close."The brand of football, the excitement, just the way he turned the club around." Clark names current boss Eddie Howe at number two. Howe took charge of the club after takeover in late 2021 and has guided the club to two Champions League qualifications, as well as winning their first trophy in 70 years after beating Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final. "I think he is an outstanding manager," Howe said. "He is the perfect manager for us because he gets the club and the area. "His work ethic is ridiculous, and his ability to develop players is unbelievable. They play an exciting brand of football, on the front foot."He has improved us and also got us one of the best seasons ever by winning that elusive trophy and getting us into the Champions League." Listen on BBC SoundsCome back later on Thursday to see who Clark put at number one

The real reason why Arsenal haven't completed deal for Viktor Gyokeres yet

Arsenal's deal to sign Viktor Gyokeres could be finalised by July 20 but there's a new reason why it hasn't been completed, according to reports. It was thought that the Gunners had won the race to land Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon until a shock transfer update emerged earlier this week. Arsenal's move for the Swedish international striker was believed to be at risk of a 'complete collapse' – but there has been a fresh twist after talks. Portuguese outlet Record report that there's now a 'good chance' that Arsenal's deal to sign Gyokeres could be finalised by the end of this week. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. The reason why Arsenal haven't yet completed a move for the 27-year-old is because the two clubs are 'separated by €2.5m' (£2.1m). According to another Portuguese outlet, A Bola, Arsenal have already offered Sporting €63.5m plus €10m in bonuses for Gyokeres' signature. The €2.5m difference between Arsenal and Sporting is thought to be in relation to the €10m in add-ons. The Gunners are happy to pay €7.5m in easily achievable bonus clauses, but are currently in talks with Sporting about the final €2.5m. After that is agreed, the deal should be completed. According to Record, Sporting have requested four specific clauses to included – each worth €2.5m – to total €10m in add-ons: Gyokeres' first 20 games for Arsenal Gyokeres playing 20 games in his second season Arsenal qualifying for the Champions League Gyokeres playing 40 games in his second season Arsenal are happy with each of these clauses – but feel one of them should relate to a more ambitious goal. Arsenal have long been in desperate need of a new striker, with some football pundits adamant that a lack of firepower up top is the reason why the north London club have fallen short in the last few top-flight title races. Gyokeres would surely fill the void given he's produced a remarkable tally of 97 goals and 28 assists across just 102 games for Sporting to date. But William Gallas has issued a warning to Gyokeres ahead of his expected summer move to Arsenal. 'He's not just making one step,' Gallas told Genting Casino. 'Going from Sporting to Arsenal right now is more like two or three steps. 'He will be playing against defenders who are really strong, maybe the strongest. In the first season, he will need to adapt. 'He's tall, he's massive, so I may get attacked for saying this but in Portugal, he had a much bigger advantage on the defenders. 'He will need to adapt to the Premier League defenders quickly. More Trending 'There's a chance that his second year is much stronger than his first year at Arsenal. 'But Arsenal will not be wanting to wait for a major trophy any longer. And the signing of a striker is seen as that last piece of the puzzle to do exactly that. 'I hope that, if he comes in, he hits the ground running. We've all been waiting for Arsenal to sign a killer. 'Only time will tell if Gyokeres is an assassin in the Premier League.' Championship promotion odds: Latest promotion betting odds for 2025/26

Promotion to the Premier League is the ultimate goal for EFL Championship clubs and every seasons, there's a nail-biting race to grab one of the three promotion places on offer in the second tier. The fight to win promotion is worth everything to fans and quite literally millions to clubs, while some bettors can turn a decent profit if they can pick out the right clubs in from the Championship promotion odds on betting sites. Each season, three teams are promoted from the Championship to the Premier League. The two clubs that finish in first and second place in the division are promoted automatically, while the other side must go through the play-offs. It's not always easy to find success in the Championship betting odds due to the unpredictable nature of the league, though there are some patterns. For example, teams that have come down from the Premier League tend to fare better thanks to their extra spending power, though there have been a fair few huge surprises Ipswich won back-to-back promotions from League 1 to the Championship and then the Premier League ahead of 2024/25, while Luton completed a remarkable 10-year journey from non-league to the top flight in 2023. This page will detail Championship promotion odds for the 2025/26 season. We use the latest odds on Championship promotion from the best football betting sites, helping readers to pick out the best value bets to go up. Of course, the three teams that have returned from the Premier league automatically land among the favourites for promotion, with Leicester City, Southampton and Ipswich all benefiting from Premier League payments. In addition, sides that have been in the top flight in recent season are always at a slight advantage, with clubs like Sheffield United and Watford carrying a threat. Of course, teams who have gone close to the play-offs and promotion could also go one better this season, with Middlesbrough, West Brom and Norwich all capable of a mounting a promotion challenge. And while this is all true, the system for Championship promotion could favour less-heralded sides to be promoted via the play-offs, as Luton and Sunderland have been in recent seasons. To that end, don't rule out newly promoted sides such as Birmingham and Wrexham, who have the necessary funding to potentially spring a surprise next season. Below is a table of promoted teams from the last five seasons. Bettors wanting to wager on the Championship promotion race should be aware that there's no each way option for these wagers. If you're selection isn't promoted, the bet is declared a loser.
