The Computational Limit of Life May Be Much Higher Than We Thought
This idea forms from the emerging evidence that biology and quantum mechanics may not be as mutually exclusive as scientists originally thought.
Although this idea requires rigorous experimentation to be proven, it might show that biological computation is much more powerful that even the greatest quantum computers.
What is the computational limit of biology? According to some technologists, the human brain is capable of 1016 computations per second, and if a super-advanced AI were to ever that threshold (and gain a whole host of other abilities), we'd enter hit what is known in tech circles as the singularity. However, a new article written by theoretical physicist Philip Kurian argues that this limit—and all other neuron-based estimations of life's computational abilities—have woefully underestimated the true abilities of biological brains.
Kurian includes a controversial (but increasingly influential) idea in his calculations: that quantum processes in a biological system, when taken together, far exceed the computing power of even the most advanced quantum computer. Published in the journal Science Advances, this article expands on QBL's recent discovery of cytoskeleton filaments exhibiting quantum optical features and recalculates the computational capacity of carbon-based life on Earth.
'This work connects the dots among the great pillars of twentieth century physics—thermodynamics, relativity, and quantum mechanics—for a major paradigm shift across the biological sciences, investigating the feasibility and implications of quantum information processing in wetware at ambient temperatures,' Kurian said in a press statement ('wetware' is a term for organic material in the human body analogous to hardware in a computer). 'Physicists and cosmologists should wrestle with these findings, especially as they consider the origins of life on Earth and elsewhere in the habitable universe, evolving in concert with the electromagnetic field.'
Biology and quantum mechanics typically don't mix, and for good reason. Artificial quantum systems generally require ultracold, approaching-absolute-zero temperatures to run, as qubits are incredibly sensitive to disturbances (this is why quantum computers also contain robust error correction measures). So, the warm and chaotic environment of, say, a human brain, is far from ideal for quantum processes.
However, for decades, some theories (that have slowly become less out there with age) have suggested that quantum processes could in fact be occurring in the brain. In some hypotheses, they could even be responsible for consciousness itself. Kurian's paper focuses on the amino acid tryptophan, which is found in many proteins and can form large networks within structures like microtubules, amyloid fibrils, cilia, and neurons. Combined with QBL's discovery last year, an idea has taken shape that aneural organisms may be able to use these quantum signals to process information.
Typically, biochemical signals involve neurons moving across cells, but in a quantum sense, tryptophan could be acting like quantum fiber optics. It would be able to perform operations in mere picoseconds, which would allow the cells to operate a billion times faster than chemical processing alone.
This revised limit may sound humbling, but if these aneural cells are using quantum signals to process information, that's good news for both the quantum computing world and the world of artificial intelligence.
'And all this in a warm soup! The quantum computing world should take serious notice,' Kurian said in a press statement. 'In the era of artificial intelligences and quantum computers, it is important to remember that physical laws restrict all their behaviors.'
Of course, much like many of the quantum theories of information processing and consciousness put forth in the past, Kurian's ideas still need rigorous testing before they completely upend our understanding of biological computation. However, what seemed inconceivable decades ago—combing the quantum world with the biological one—is quickly become less so as we learn more about the subatomic biological world.

Alphabet stock still looking cheap: Opening Bid top takeaway
Sorry, trade deal tracker fans, you'll have to take a back seat this morning for earnings analysis. Tesla (TSLA) is the top trending ticker on Yahoo Finance as the EV maker delivered a weak quarter that everyone on the Street expected. What they didn't expect was a subdued Elon Musk on the earnings call. A little less sizzle on the mic this go around for the prickly gazillionaire! Then we have Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL), which dropped the mic in its own right on Wednesday afternoon — but for the right reasons: bullish earnings call commentary on cloud demand and how it's monetizing AI in its core search business. The company also lifted its capital expenditure for 2025 to $85 billion, a $10 billion jump from its previous forecast. "What we see here is that AI spend is going absolutely nowhere but up," Gradient Investments analyst Lisa Schreiber said on Opening Bid. "So, it's still very strong, which is a very perfect backdrop for the rest of the hyperscalers, as [their earnings] are coming in over the next couple of weeks, that benefits even more parts of the industries." There are also peripheral reports in focus, such as IBM (IBM) and Chipotle (CMG). IBM had a good quarter. CFO Jim Kavanaugh tells me the company is finding more expense savings and is seeing sizable AI software demand. But the stock is getting hit. Chipotle had an unsavory quarter, as sales surprisingly slowed. That stock is getting shredded. "Markets digested a high-impact slate of earnings marked by extreme single-stock volatility, investors rewarding clean beats paired with credible guidance, punishing any signs of softness," Evercore ISI strategist Julian Emanuel said. For me, the main stock story on Opening Bid today was Alphabet. The numbers were so strong that one has to wonder why the stock didn't gain more — especially considering shares trade at a discounted forward PE ratio relative to the S&P 500 (^GSPC). Zoom in: Alphabet's big quarter Alphabet is trading at only 19.3 times forward earnings on a PE basis (S&P 500 is at 24 times), and the stock goes up just 2% on Thursday morning? Did anyone listen to the earnings call? I did: The company said revenue growth accelerated throughout the business. Cloud business is rocking. The company said it's not losing key AI talent to the giant wallet of Meta (META). The discussion around AI and search seems very bullish. YouTube is crushing it. "AI (beast) mode — it's time to close the valuation gap," KeyBanc analyst Justin Patterson said. Wedbush analyst Dan Ives added, "We continue see a favorable risk/reward for Alphabet and think there is a case for multiple expansion in the coming quarters as investors gain more comfort around the current macro environment, regulatory risk, and the impact of generative AI on the business." Google shares climb following Q2 earnings beat
Shares of Google parent Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) rose in early trading Thursday, after it reported better than expected earnings after the bell on Wednesday on the strength of its advertising and cloud businesses. "AI is positively impacting every part of the business, driving strong momentum," CEO Sundar Pichai said in a statement. Alphabet shares rose more than 1%. The stock has risen around 0.5% this year, compared with a gain of over 8% for the S&P 500 (^GSPC). "Search delivered double-digit revenue growth, and our new features, like AI Overviews and AI Mode, are performing well," he added. "We continue to see strong performance in YouTube as well as subscriptions offerings. And Cloud had strong growth in revenues, backlog and profitability. Its annual revenue run-rate is now more than $50 billion." But the company said capital expenditures will climb to $85 billion. Google previously projected $75 billion. For the quarter, Google saw adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $2.31 on revenue excluding traffic acquisition costs (TAC) of $81.7 billion. Analysts were anticipating adj. EPS of $2.17 on revenue ex-TAC of $79.6 billion. The company posted revenue of $71.3 billion during the same period last year. Advertising revenue came in at $71.3 billion versus expectations of $69.6 billion. Search revenue topped out at $54.1 billion versus an anticipated $52.7 billion. YouTube ad revenue was $9.8 billion versus expectations of $9.5 billion. Google Cloud Platform revenue hit $13.6 billion. Analysts were looking for $13.1 billion. This year, the company is expected to drop $75 billion expanding its AI capabilities, including on massive data centers running on both its own home-grown chips and Nvidia's processors. Google is also facing potentially devastating consequences from a judge's decision that held it liable for antitrust violations in search. Judge Amit Mehta of the US District Court for the District of Columbia is expected to issue a ruling on "remedies" that follows the Justice Department's victory against the company sometime next month. Judge Mehta held that Google violated antitrust law by boxing out rivals in the online search engine and online search text markets. To restore competition, he could order Google to refrain from longstanding exclusivity deals with the likes of Apple (AAPL) that set Google Search as the default option on the company's smartphones. Mehta could also force Google to sell off its Chrome browser, the most popular web browser in the world. That would put a dent in Google's all-important search business, a dangerous proposition for the company.
