The pursuit of truths: A letter on the boy who cried aliens (op-ed)

Scientists owe it to the general public to convey their results accurately and honestly.
Over the last week, I — along with most of my astronomer and planetary scientist colleagues — received emails, texts, and phone calls from family, friends, and the media. Everyone was asking the same question: "Did we really find evidence of life on a planet outside of our own solar system?" This outpouring of communication was prompted by a recent article published by The New York Times entitled "Astronomers Detect a Possible Signature of Life on a Distant Planet."
The Astrophysical Journal Letters recently published an article entitled "New Constraints on DMS and DMDS in the Atmosphere of K2-18 b from JWST MIRI." The peer-reviewed article reported a detection — albeit at low statistical significance — of the presence of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and/or dimethyl disulfide (DMDS). DMS and DMDS can be produced both by living organisms (such as phytoplankton) or from run-of-the-mill chemical reactions that are not associated with life at all. However, the authors issued a press release only focused on aliens.
If this news article was a wildfire spreading out of control, then every astronomer was a firefighter, desperately trying to minimize the damage spurred by the press release accompanying the paper. Why? Because the news article was exaggerated.

This tale is not new to astronomers. In fact, it has played out over and over again: fossilized microbes were found on Mars (nope), an interstellar interloper was an alien spaceship (nope), and bacterial life exists in the clouds of Venus (to be tested), to name a few of our own wolves.
As a collective, we can't resist anthropomorphizing the natural world. Many cultures thought there was a man in the moon, until we learned that his face was a series of craters. In 1976, the Viking 1 orbiter took a photo of a face on Mars, which turned out to be an optical illusion of shadows on a hill. These claims highlight the delicate balance between philosophy and science. In philosophy, we can conceptually explore our existence and place in the universe. In science, we need hard evidence.
Since its foundation, NASA has been a constant source of support for the development and the launch of observatories designed to figure out if we are alone in the universe. We want to understand if terrestrial planets orbiting other distant stars could harbor life. In December 2021, NASA launched the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which is dedicating hundreds of hours to observing these planets to determine whether or not they have atmospheres.
We want to understand if Jupiter's moon Europa has a liquid ocean with more water than all of Earth's oceans combined hidden below its icy surface. In October 2024, NASA launched Europa Clipper, which will determine the thickness of this outer icy layer and characterize the Galilean moon's overall geology.
We want to understand if Saturn's moon Titan has the proper composition to support prebiotic chemistry. In April 2024, NASA approved the Dragonfly mission, a car-sized nuclear-powered drone, to fly over and land on Titan with an estimated 2028 launch. Dragonfly will measure the composition of Titan up close and search for chemical signatures that could indicate the presence of life.
All of these great observatories will help us to understand fundamental truths about celestial bodies. But if we want to answer one of humanity's oldest questions — are we alone? — then we have to be able to communicate our results. Our ability to trust real scientific discoveries is crumbling under the weight of those who want to be "the first," undermining the efforts of thousands of scientists and engineers pursuing truths with due diligence and following the rules of the scientific method we learned in elementary school. When people believe that we have found life on other planets when we have not, we've lost more than public trust — we've lost our own direction.
Flying to Europa or Titan, and looking at the atmospheres of distant exoplanets, are no longer the subject of fantastical science fiction stories. These aren't dreams. This is all of our present-day reality, and even some of our day jobs. When we sit at our desks and analyze data from these observatories, we are inching toward the answer we want so badly. But over-sensationalizing at best — and even outright lying at worst — about the results of these observatories erodes public trust and ultimately harms the very institutions working in the pursuit of scientific discovery.
This comes at a critical time, when the White House has proposed to slash NASA's science budget by nearly 50% and the National Science Foundation's (NSF) budget by up to 50%. Cutting these programs isn't just shortsighted — it's self-destructive. NASA and NSF fund science across all disciplines. Both agencies have long led and participated in global efforts to pursue scientific breakthroughs, like JWST.

With these proposed budget cuts, we risk losing the scientists and engineers whose research is the foundation for future mission development.
We risk losing the ability to support and train the next generation of scientists.
We risk missing the very voices that could guide us through our most profound discoveries.
We risk losing touch with our fundamental nature to ask and answer questions about our place in the universe.
The search for life beyond Earth has been an ongoing endeavor since the first philosopher questioned if we are alone in the universe. It relies on our ability to connect astronomy, biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, and even philosophy, which initially paved the way for scientific thinking. From all of these angles, we will continue to pursue an answer to this age-old question.
Yet, in our endeavor, we must remember that our mission is greater than the research of the individual. We must not stoop to using over-sensationalized results to support our own personal agendas. And, we must not forget our collective direction: the pursuit of truths and our responsibility to share these truths — and only these truths — with humanity.

More than 200 current and former NASA employees have signed an open letter known as the Voyager Declaration that is pushing back on "harmful" proposed cuts to the world's largest space agency. The letter, which was made public Monday, July 21, was released at a time that NASA faces a historically steep budget reduction and has grappled with widespread layoffs and resignations. President Donald Trump in May put forth a proposed budget for the next fiscal year that would slash $6 billion from NASA's budget – equivalent to nearly a 25% cut. At the same time, the U.S. space agency has found itself without a full-time administrator since Bill Nelson stepped down Jan. 20, the day of Trump's inauguration. Trump appointed Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy as NASA's interim administrator earlier in July. Here's what to know about the letter NASA workers signed, as well as the agency's response. Released on the day after Moon Day – an unofficial celebration of the 56th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing – the letter comes at a turbulent moment for NASA. Facing the agency is a potentially looming budget cut from $24.8 billion to $18.8 billion, which includes a substantial hit to a significant portion of the agency's science missions and activities. "The last six months have seen rapid and wasteful changes which have undermined our mission and caused catastrophic impacts on NASA's workforce," the letter argued, pointing to "arbitrary" funding cuts that undermine programs that Congress had elected to fund. Washington D.C.-based nonprofit Stand Up for Science collected signatures for the letter. "Dismantling this American institution is a travesty," Colette Delawalla, founder and executive director of Stand Up for Science, said in a statement. "No one voted to willfully give our global dominance in science to other nations in exchange for tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy." What is the NASA letter opposing? What is Kennedy Space Center? While NASA's official headquarters is in D.C., most of the agency's space program has operations in Florida's Cape Canaveral area. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has also been vocal about his desire for NASA to move its headquarters to the Sunshine State, specifically the Kennedy Space Center near Cape Canaveral. Located on the east coast of Florida on Merritt Island in Brevard County, the Kennedy Space Center is NASA's primary spaceport where a majority of the space agency's missions get off the ground. What other space orgs are speaking out against Trump's NASA policy? Among the most vocal opponents to Trump's proposed budget cuts has been the Planetary Society, a nonprofit organization co-founded by Carl Sagan in 1980 whose chief executive is now Bill Nye. The organization has widely condemned the White House's proposed 47% cuts to NASA science activities under the budget proposal, which it views as "an extinction-level event" for many cornerstone missions. "It will damage the agency's highly skilled workforce, abandon national priorities, and gut STEM education and outreach," the Planetary Society said in a May 30 statement when Trump's full proposal was made public. Earlier in July, the organization shared an open letter signed by all seven living former heads of NASA's Science Mission Directorate. In the letter, the leaders warned that Trump's proposal would 'walk away from dozens of current, extraordinarily successful and productive science missions' and halt nearly all future investments in exploration and innovation. Crew-11 to replace astronauts at ISS who helped 'stuck' Starliner crew return home
The next group of astronauts could be heading to space in a week, where they will relieve a group of spacefarers at the International Space Station who played a critical role in bringing the Boeing Starliner saga to an end. The mission, known as Crew-11, is the latest in a series of joint ventures between NASA and SpaceX to send astronauts to the outpost, where they spend months at a time conducting scientific research only possible in orbit. The four-person crew, which includes two NASA astronauts, are the first humans to fly to space since a relatively brief private voyage known as Axiom Mission 4 came to an end earlier in July after 20 days. The arrival of the astronauts selected for the Crew-11 mission at the space station will also pave the way for four others to leave. Their Crew-10 predecessors arrived at the ISS in mid-March in a headline-grabbing mission that set the stage for the long-awaited departure of the NASA astronauts − Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams − who crewed the ill-fated Starliner space capsule the year before. Here's everything to know about the Crew-11 mission and its impending launch from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. What is the SpaceX Crew-11 mission? As the name suggests, Crew-11 is NASA and SpaceX's 11th science expedition to the International Space Station. The missions, most of which last about six months, are contracted under NASA's commercial crew program. The program allows the U.S. space agency to pay SpaceX to launch and transport astronauts and cargo to orbit aboard the company's own vehicles, freeing up NASA to focus on its Artemis lunar program and other spaceflight missions, including future crewed voyages to Mars. When was the first NASA, SpaceX Crew mission? What is the Dragon? The first of SpaceX's Crew missions ferrying astronauts to the orbital outpost on its Dragon capsule began in 2020. Standing nearly 27 feet tall and about 13 feet wide, Dragon capsules can carry up to seven astronauts into orbit, though most of SpaceX's Crew missions feature a crew of four. The Dragon is also the only U.S. spacecraft capable of carrying astronauts to and from the space station. For that reason, NASA selected the Dragon to bring home Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, the two NASA astronauts who rode the Boeing Starliner capsule to the space station in June 2024 for the vehicle's inaugural human spaceflight test. Certifying the Starliner capsule for operation would eventually give NASA a second vehicle in addition to Dragon for regular human spaceflights to orbit. Who are the astronauts on the Crew-11 mission? The Crew-11 mission includes four spacefarers: Mission commander , a NASA astronaut from Virginia making her first spaceflight Pilot , a NASA astronaut from Pennsylvania making his fourth trip to space Mission specialist , a Japanese astronaut with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut making his second trip to the space station Mission specialist Oleg Platonov, a Russian Roscosmos cosmonaut making his first spaceflight Crew-11 astronauts reassigned after Boeing Starliner failure In an interesting twist, Cardman, Fincke and Yui all experienced major spaceflight assignment changes as a result of the Boeing Starliner debacle. Fincke and Yui were both originally selected to fly on the Starliner's crew rotation mission had the spacecraft's inaugural human flight test in June 2024 been a success. Fincke was also the backup astronaut on a flight test for which Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams were ultimately selected. As for Cardman, she would have flown on the Crew-9 mission in September 2024 before she and NASA astronaut Stephanie Wilson were bumped from the mission. Instead of a full contingent, only NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov traveled to the space station to leave two seats for Wilmore and Williams on the return flight. The decision was made when NASA opted to undock the troubled Starliner capsule without its crew, leaving Wilmore and Williams in need of a ride home. When will NASA, SpaceX launch Crew-11 for ISS? The Crew-10 mission is due to get off the ground no earlier than 12:09 p.m. ET Thursday, July 31, from near Cape Canaveral, Florida, according to NASA. SpaceX uses its Falcon 9 rocket – one of the most active in the world – to launch the crew missions from Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Once in orbit, the SpaceX Dragon capsule that the astronauts are aboard then separates from the rocket, using its own thrusters to continue onto the space station. When will the Crew-10 astronauts depart space station, return to Earth? The arrival of Cardman, Fincke, Yui and Platonov will ultimately pave the way for their predecessors, the Crew-10 contingent, to depart the space station and head back to Earth. NASA astronauts Nichole Ayers and Anne McClain arrived March 16 at the station with JAXA astronaut Takuya Onishi and Roscosmos cosmonaut Kirill Peskov as part of the Crew-10 mission. That mission made headlines for its role in paving the way for the NASA astronauts who crewed the doomed Boeing Starliner to depart with the Crew-9 mission. But the Crew-10 astronauts won't leave right away. What follows upon the arrival of any astronauts is a brief handover period in which the new crew members are familiarized with the orbital laboratory and station operations. McClain, Ayers, Onishi and Peskov will then depart a few days later on the same Dragon capsule that transported them to the space station. Mission teams will also have to review weather conditions off the coast of California, where the Dragon will eventually make a water landing. Who else is at the International Space Station? Another three spacefarers are also living and working about the International Space Station as members of Expedition 73. These 3 meteor showers are happening in late July: What to know
It may be the best time of year for stargazers to witness meteors blazing through the night sky. Late July will offer the chance to witness three separate meteor shower events happening at the same time, according to the American Meteor Society (AMS). Adding to the sky show, the moon will be in the evening sky and set before meteor activity is strongest, meaning its brightness won't diminish the visibility of the meteors, according to AMS. For best viewing, NASA advises spectators to lie flat on their backs in a region away from light pollution. Meteors should be visible after about 30 minutes, when eyes adjust to the darkness. The Alpha Capricornids The Alpha Capricornids are one of the two meteor showers peaking in late July. The minor shower began on July 7 and will last through Aug. 13, but is expected to peak on July 30, according to AMS. The Alpha Capricornids are known to produce fireballs -- typically three to five an hour, at maximum, astronomers say. Most of the shower members are faint, but some can appear brighter than any of the surrounding stars, according to AMS. The meteors appear slow-moving. In late July, the meteors radiate near the area of Alpha Capricorni, a double star visible to the naked eye. This area of the sky rises in the east at about 8 p.m. Local Daylight Time, but very little activity can be seen at this time because many of the meteors are blocked by the horizon. Astronomers recommend waiting to view the Alpha Capricornids until later at night, when the radiant -- where the meteor appears to originate from -- has gained more altitude and the moon has set, according to AMS. The radiant lies highest in the sky between midnight and 1 a.m. LDT. To find them at this time, look south. The Southern Delta Aquariids Night owls will benefit when searching for the Southern Delta Aquariids, according to AMS. To see them, look toward the radiant near southwestern Aquarius, just west of the star known as Delta Aquarii, about 40 degrees east of the Alpha Capricornids. They rise at about 10 p.m. LDT and are highest in the sky around 3 a.m. LDT. They will reach maximum activity on July 30 -- the same night as the Alpha Capricornids, according to AMS. But they are easier to differentiate from the Alpha Capricornids because they are much faster -- typically less than a second. Hourly rates around 3 a.m. on the morning of July 30 should be about five to 10 meteors, according to AMS. However, in the southern hemisphere, where the radiant lies overhead, rates can reach between 10 and 20 meteors per hour. The Southern Delta Aquariids began on July 19 and will run through Aug. 13. The Perseids The Perseids, considered by astronomers to be the best meteor shower of the year, began on July 17 and are expected to last until Aug. 23, according to AMS. They typically peak in mid-August. They are known for their fireballs -- large explosions of light and color that persist longer than an average meteor streak, according to NASA. Fireballs are brighter and originate from larger particles of cometary material. The Perseids' "swift and bright" meteors often leave streaks of light and color behind as they track through the sky, according to AMS. They originate from the debris left behind by the comet Swift-Tuttle as it orbits the sun every 133 years. The Perseids can be viewed all over the night sky but are best seen from the Northern Hemisphere during the pre-dawn hours, according to NASA. To find them, look toward the constellation Perseus, where the radiant of the Perseids appears to originate. This year, the Perseids are expected to peak around Aug. 12, according to
