NBA Raptors drop Ujiri as president after 13 seasons
The 54-year-old English-born executive has British, Nigerian, Kenyan and Canadian citizenship. He was named the NBA's Executive of the Year in 2013 while with Denver, the only non-US winner of the award.
"During his 13 seasons with the Raptors, Masai has helped transform the organization on the court and has been an inspirational leader off it," MLSE President and chief executive officer Keith Pelley said.
"He brought an NBA championship to Toronto and urged us to believe in this city and ourselves. We are grateful for all he has done and wish him and his family the very best."
The Raptors, however, went 30-52 this past season, missing the NBA playoffs for the third year in a row and fourth time in five seasons. They haven't won a playoff series since getting past Brooklyn in the 2020 opening round.
"As we plan for the franchise's future, and its return to the NBA playoffs, a search for the successor as president of the Raptors, led by CAA Executive Search, will begin immediately."
The move came a day after the NBA Draft and just ahead of next week's start of NBA free agency.
The Raptors announced they would keep key front office personnel, including general manager Bobby Webster, who received a contract extension, the terms of which were not revealed.
"We are confident that the Raptors organization, under the guidance of Bobby and his team, is in a great place," Pelley said. "They have a plan in place for next season and beyond as the team continues its rebuild, and we have confidence in their ability to execute and ultimately, to excel.
"We feel the team is in a strong, stable place, and we believe the addition of a new president will continue to move the Raptors forward, towards our next NBA championship."
Ujiri played his entire on-court career in Europe, including a stint with England's Derby Rams, before joining the Orlando Magic and Denver Nuggets as a scout. He was hired by the Raptors as global scouting director and in 2008 became Toronto's assistant general manager.
He returned to Denver in 2010 as executive vice president and general manager, the first African general manager in major American sports.
The Nuggets won a club-record 57 games in 2012-13, with Ujiri being named the league's top executive, and Ujiri signed with the Raptors as executive vice president and general manager in May 2013.

"This is what I want from attacking players -- I have said many times that I prefer to have attacking players with 10-12 goals each than just one striker with 40 goals. "His contribution has been top and I am sure it will be even better next season." Chelsea have won all three previous competitive meetings with Benfica, the last coming in the Europa League final in 2013. But Maresca is wary of the Portuguese side after they beat Bayern Munich to top their group at the competition. "I think Benfica, not only in this competition, have always shown how big a club they are in Europe," said the coach. "In the last game they beat Bayern so they showed what they can do. Every game is tough and complicated, and anything can happen."

Islanders take Canadian teen Schaefer first overall in NHL Draft
Schaefer played the past two seasons with the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He missed nine games to start the 2024-25 season with glandular fever, then suffered a broken collarbone at the 2025 World Junior Championships. Amid those setbacks, he finished the season with seven goals and 15 assists in just 17 games played, but that didn't dim the prospects for a player admired for his maturity as well as his skills. "Matthew the hockey player is outstanding," Islanders general manager Mathieu Darche said. "The human being is as outstanding as the hockey player. We're so excited to have him here." Schaefer has had to overcome plenty of adversity already in his young career. He fashioned a standout rookie season in 2023-24 despite grappling with his mother Jennifer's death from cancer on February 24. At the draft ceremony in Los Angeles, he held back tears after his name was called, thanking his mom. "You wait for this moment your whole life," said Schaefer, who will turn 18 on September 5. "I wish my mom could be here but I know she's with me in spirit." The San Jose Sharks had the second overall selection and took 18-year-old Canadian forward Michael Misa, who played last season for Saginaw of the OHL. The Chicago Blackhawks selected third and took Anton Frondell of Sweden. Trump ends trade talks with Canada over tax on US tech firms
President Donald Trump said on Friday, June 27, that he is calling off trade negotiations with Canada in retaliation for taxes impacting US tech firms, adding that Ottawa will learn of their new tariff rate within a week. Trump was referring to Canada's digital services tax, which was enacted last year and forecast to bring in Can$5.9 billion (US4.2 billion) over five years. While the measure is not new, US service providers will be "on the hook for a multi-billion dollar payment in Canada" come June 30, noted the Computer & Communications Industry Association recently. The 3% tax applies to large or multinational companies such as Alphabet, Amazon and Meta that provide digital services to Canadians, and Washington has previously requested dispute settlement talks over the matter. "Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately," Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform Friday. He called the country "very difficult" to trade with. Canada may have been spared some of Trump's most sweeping duties, such as a 10% levy on nearly all US trading partners, but it faces a separate tariff regime. Trump has also imposed steep levies on imports of steel, aluminum and autos. Last week, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Ottawa will adjust its 25% counter tariffs on US steel and aluminum − in response to a doubling of US levies on the metals to 50% − if a bilateral trade deal was not reached in 30 days. "We will continue to conduct these complex negotiations in the best interest of Canadians," Carney said Friday, adding that he had not spoken to Trump following the US president's announcement.
