CM outlines nine strategies to increase Penang revenue

The Star20-05-2025
Penang government has outlined nine strategies to increase state revenue.
These include selling more state land, collecting an estimated RM6mil in quit rent arrears, reviewing land title conversion processes, as well as reviewing liquor licence fees, entertainment duties and hotel room fees.
'The state government is also aiming to reduce expenditure, but costs continue to rise each year due to salary realignments, which increase emoluments,' Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said in reply to a question from Goh Choon Aik (PH-Bukit Tambun) during the state assembly sitting at Penang Legislative Assembly building in George Town.
Other revenue efforts include higher animal treatment fees and revised ornamental plant rental rates at Penang Botanic Gardens.
Chow also touched on the RM100mil advance from the Federal Government which was intended as contingency funds to cover a potential deficit.
'Penang government's projected deficit of over RM500mil for 2024 did not happen due to increased revenue; it was reduced to around RM100mil.
'The advance payment remains available but it must be repaid to the Federal Government,' he said.
In a statement, Penang MCA chairman Datuk Tan Teik Cheng termed the nine proposed strategies as a move that would eventually burden the public.
'The government's recent announcement to raise taxes, fees and charges – including liquor licence fees, quit rent enforcement and even veterinary service charges – raises concerns over fiscal management under the DAP-led administration.
'These measures will directly impact the daily lives of Penangites, the business community and even tourists,' he said.
Tan said the admission that Penang had to seek over RM100mil in advance from Putrajaya underscored the severity of the state's financial position. — By IMRAN HILMY

BN Sabah not a backup, but ready to lead — Suhaimi

Suhaimi KOTA KINABALU (July 27): Barisan Nasional (BN) Sabah is not a second option in the state's political landscape but a force ready to lead with proven capacity, said Libaran Member of Parliament and Sabah Umno Information Chief Datuk Suhaimi Nasir. In a firm statement issued on Sunday, Suhaimi stressed that the cooperation between BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH) was not born out of crisis or political desperation, but through deliberate, strategic discussions aimed at ensuring long-term stability in Sabah. 'Politics is not about who pats each other on the back today, but about who truly has the capacity to lead Sabah forward,' he said. He added that the BN-PH cooperation was never intended as a political lifeline for any party. Instead, it was forged with a clear objective — to establish a stable, inclusive, and people-centric government ahead of the upcoming 17th Sabah state election (PRN17). 'BN Sabah is not a mere complement to any political coalition. We are not a second option. We are a team ready to lead this state, equipped with proven experience, solid organisational structure, and real capacity,' Suhaimi stated. He explained that the ongoing political negotiations between BN Sabah and PH partners are part of their election preparations and are not driven by personal or partisan agendas. 'Since the beginning, BN Sabah has consistently emphasised the need to form a government that is truly stable, inclusive, and focused on the people — not one that depends on temporary arrangements or political manoeuvring,' he said. Suhaimi's remarks are seen as a clear signal of BN Sabah's intention to play a leading role in shaping the state's political future, as parties begin positioning themselves ahead of PRN17.

Penang livestock revenue hits RM1.906 billion with poultry leading growth

KEPALA BATAS: Penang recorded a Livestock Revenue Value (NHT) of RM1.906 billion last year, marking an increase of RM41.54 million compared to the previous year. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow revealed that poultry and duck products, including meat and eggs, were the largest contributors, accounting for 91.75 per cent of the total NHT. 'The livestock industry remains a vital source of protein for the people of this state,' Chow said during his speech at the opening of the Penang Farmers, Livestock Breeders, and Fishermen Day at the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI). Interim results from the Penang Agricultural Census 2023 showed that the livestock sector contributed 44 per cent of the state's total agricultural sales, valued at RM3.514 billion. Chow emphasised that the Livestock Enactment aims to modernise self-sustaining industries like poultry and pig farming, shifting them toward large-scale, technology-driven operations. The event, held from Friday until today, was also attended by State Agrotechnology, Food Security, and Cooperative Development Committee chairman Fahmi Zainol. Chow highlighted the adoption of closed-house farming to improve production quality and environmental sustainability while ensuring support for small-scale traditional livestock farming through the Livestock Industry Development Project. Efforts to control zoonotic diseases remain a priority to safeguard public health and industry sustainability. Chow added that Penang's agricultural strategy aligns with the National Agro-Food Policy (DAN 2.0) 2021-2025, focusing on food security. The state is also developing strategic agricultural parks like Ara Kuda and Mayfield, which utilise advanced farming technology. The federal government's Integrated Agricultural Development Area (IADA) initiative further strengthens the rice industry through 12 key programmes aimed at boosting efficiency and resilience. – Bernama
