World No1 Humphries, 30, showed his anger to a whistling fan midway through the clash.
In the end the power-scoring of Van Veen won the contest.
The Dutch star said: 'It means so much. I think it's the biggest win of my career.
'To be here at the iconic Winter Gardens on my second time. Last year I missed five match darts and before I hit the double four tonight, I missed three match darts. I thought 'here we go again'. Finally I hit that winning double.'
Van Veen opened in style and broke Humphries' throw in the first leg with double 16.
The flying Dutchman was bang on song and soon doubled his lead.
Finally, the World No1 got on the board with double 10 and it was soon level with double eight.
Then 'Cool Hand' delivered a wonderful 146 with double 16 to go in front for the first time.
Van Veen wasn't done, he won the next three after the break to retake the lead at 5-3.
Humphries then missed tops and was clearly angry by a whistler in the crowd.

Cameron Menzies was crushed 10-2 by Danny Noppert, which included a humiliating moment.
Trailing 3-0, the Scot managed to bust 178 by hitting a 180 in the fourth leg.
In his 20th successive Matchplay, James Wade marched on with a comfortable 10-3 victory over Joe Cullen.

Littler wins Wattimena thriller but Van Gerwen goes out
Luke Littler survived a real scare before fighting back to beat Jermaine Wattimena 13-11 in a thriller to reach the World Matchplay quarter-finals in Blackpool, but three-time champion Michael van Gerwen is out after defeat to Josh champion Littler looked out of sorts at Winter Gardens as he slipped 4-0 and then 7-2 behind against Dutchman pulling one leg back immediately before the second break, a clearly fired up Littler let out a roar of delight and gestured to the crowd that he was not going home just returned from the break reinvigorated, winning six legs in a row, but Wattimena rediscovered his composure and the two players traded blows to send the game to a tie breakLittler missed two match darts as the nerves began to show, but after making the third he once again roared in celebration and pointed to the star on his shirt, which signifies his World Championship victory."When I pointed to the star on my shirt, I'm a world champion for a reason, I find these gears when I need it," Littler told Sky Sports."I've not felt pressure like that since the first round of the World Championship. I was a bit nervous and it's on to my third game here, I've won two of them."I want to get back on stage and right now I can't wait to be in the quarter-final."Van Gerwen made a flying start against Northern Ireland's Rock, taking the opening leg with a 150 checkout before surging into a 5-1 narrowed the game to 6-4 at the second break only for Van Gerwen to move into a 9-6 lead and seemingly on the brink of Rock fought back again and the momentum to swung in his favour when a superb 152 checkout cut Van Gerwen's lead down to one, before winning the next two legs to take the lead for the first Gerwen needed a 138 checkout to stay in the game and make it 10-10, but Rock held his nerve in a tense tie break."I kept my emotions, I think, throughout the game. In the middle part of the game I felt like I couldn't miss," he told Sky Sports. "I put Chris under a lot of pressure. I think he still played pretty decent in patches."I think early on we were both flying and I was just pipping him on a couple of legs, probably disheartened him a little bit. It's a good game for me."Andrew Gilding set up a meeting with Littler after the former UK Open champion beat Dutchman Dirk van Duijvenbode 11-5 to reach the last eight of the World Matchplay for the second successive year.

Horse racing tips: ‘He's a class act' – Templegate's NAP to strike for daddy-daughter duo at the Racing League
TEMPLEGATE'S Thursday tips are below - where he fancies a father-daughter duo to strike gold in the Racing League. Back a horse by clicking their odds below. DOSMAN (7.10 Yarmouth, nap) Nobody takes the Racing League more seriously than the Osbornes and they can have a winner on opening night with this four-year-old. He returned from nine months off with a mighty second at Newcastle, travelling like a class act before just being run down late. That form is working out and he'll be fitter now with Saffie on board. MILLER SPIRIT (8.10 Yarmouth, nb) Is working up to a win. He ran his best race for a long time when fourth at Ascot last time. He was just two lengths off the pace in that hot contest and has dropped nicely down the weights. WAVE RIDER (8.40 Yarmouth, treble) He is rarely out of the frame and had plenty in hand when scooting in at Sandown last month. He's had a little break since then and has enough to strike again. SECRET BEACH (5.40 Yarmouth) Has come on plenty this season after a wind op. He bolted up at York last time over this trip and looks fairly handicapped on a mark of 77. He goes on any ground and looks good for the Lucky 15. Templegate's tips Commercial content notice: Taking one of the offers featured in this article may result in a payment to The Sun. Liverpool sign Hugo Ekitiké in £79m deal after fending off late Manchester United bid
Liverpool have completed the signing of Hugo Ekitiké from Eintracht Frankfurt, with the striker rejecting a late attempt by Manchester United to hijack the transfer. The France Under-21 international has joined the Premier League champions for a guaranteed £69m plus £10m in add-ons, having undergone a medical in the UK on Tuesday. Ekitiké is understood to have signed a six-year contract and will join his new teammates on their pre-season tour of Hong Kong and Japan. The striker was a longstanding target for Liverpool, despite their interest in the Newcastle centre-forward Alexander Isak, and contact was first made with the 23-year-old's representatives in January. Arne Slot then outlined his plans for Ekitiké in a call at the end of last season. Newcastle made a move for Ekitiké last week after missing out on Liam Delap and João Pedro but their £70m bid was rejected by Eintracht and the player made it clear his preference was to join Liverpool. United also received the same information when they made a last-minute attempt to derail the deal. United's director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, is believed to have contacted Eintracht's sporting director Markus Krösche over a possible transfer but Ekitiké was already set on Anfield. Ekitiké scored 22 goals and made 12 assists in his one full season at Frankfurt, helping the club to qualify for the Champions League, and while he is primarily a No 9 Liverpool believe he can also operate as a second striker or out wide. He is potentially the third most expensive signing in Liverpool's history behind Florian Wirtz and Darwin Núñez. Anfield officials are confident he can become one of the finest forwards in the game should his recent progress with Eintracht be maintained. Sign up to Football Daily Kick off your evenings with the Guardian's take on the world of football after newsletter promotion The deal for Ekitiké, which is subject to international clearance, takes Liverpool's summer spending to almost £300m. The former Paris Saint-Germain player is the club's seventh signing of the window, following Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and a trio of goalkeepers: Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi and Freddie Woodman.
