WNBA commissioner optimistic about getting new CBA deal done

Hamilton Spectator11 hours ago
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert feels optimistic that the league and the players' union will be able to come to a new collective bargaining agreement at some point, even if it's after the end of October deadline.
While the two sides are far apart right now
after meeting for the first time in person
on Thursday since December with more than 40 players in attendance, Engelbert has faith that a deal will get finished.
'I'm still really optimistic that we'll get something done that would be transformational,' she said before the All-Star Game on Saturday night. 'And that, next year at All-Star, we'll be talking about how great everything is. Obviously there's a lot of hard work to be done on both sides to get there.'
Engelbert said that more meetings are planned in the future. The current CBA will expire on Oct. 31 after the season is over.
'I have confidence we can get something done by October, but I'm not going to put an exact date on it,' she said. 'We've got some room to continue negotiations if we're close at that point.'
There's a lot of money coming into the league over the next few years with a
new 11-year media rights deal
worth over $2.2 billion, three new expansion teams that
each paid $250 million in fees
and many new sponsors.
The players top priorities are greatly increased salaries and a revenue sharing plan which Engelbert understands.
'We're going to do something transformational here because we we want the same things as the players, but we want to significantly increase their salary and benefits while balancing with our owners, their ability to have a path to profitability, as well as in to continued investment,' she said.
Other areas that Engelbert discussed included:
Globalization
Engelbert talked about trying to expand the footprint of the league around the world more. The league will welcome its first team outside the U.S. next year with the addition of the Toronto Tempo. Engelbert mentioned Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa as places that could have huge interest in the WNBA.
'I think we're really strong domestically now ... There's a huge amount of possibilities, to turn these players into a global household being stars that they've now become here in the United States domestically,' she said.
Officiating
The consistency of officiating has been a topic that players and coaches have been discussing a lot this season and Engelbert said that the league is aware and will evaluate it.
'I realize consistency is the name of the game and I think it's something we definitely need to look at and evaluate. There's an independent evaluation of our officials and there are ramifications. It's something we need to continue to work on. As our game evolves so does our officiating, so we're on it.'
Scheduling
Engelbert said that the league would look at possibly expanding the length of the season in the future on the backend of the season. The WNBA can't really start any earlier because of the NCAA Tournament, but could go into early November. There's a good shot that will happen next year with the FIBA World Cup taking place in early September.
'We're looking about what's the best footprint, what's the best number of games?' she said.

WNBPA president Nneka Ogwumike doubles down on CBA negotiation stance

The post WNBPA president Nneka Ogwumike doubles down on CBA negotiation stance appeared first on ClutchPoints. As the 2025 WNBA season rolls on, one of the consistent storylines will continue to be the ongoing CBA negotiations between the league and the WNBA Players Association. WNBPA president and Seattle Storm forward Nneka Ogwumike offered an update on negotiations with the current CBA set to expire at the end of the season. As the league continues to enjoy its meteoric growth, she is continuing to publicly push for her colleagues' salaries to reflect that. 'We have women out here who know the business. And we understand where our league has been and where it's going,' Ogwumike said Sunday after her Storm defeated the defending champion New York Liberty. 'And we're prepared. We're prepared. And we want to be able to come out here and represent ourselves and our value the same way we do on the court, in our contracts, in our facilities, in the standards of the resources that are available to us.' In 2026, the league will begin an 11-year media rights deal worth more than $2 billion in total, and with ratings, attendance and advertising at an all-time high, player salaries are still lagging behind. With the WNBA's momentum gaining, Ogwumike is hoping to see changes. 'Everybody wants to go to the same place. Everyone just has a different idea of how we get there,' she continued. 'We've seen a lot of growth recently, so we have to see that being reflected in how we're compensated to continue to give you guys games like this every night.' The WNBA has shown willingness to work with the players in the past, including most recently on rolling out charter flights league-wide. The previous CBA also led to a sizable pay increase for the players, including additional earning opportunities like the Commissioner's Cup. But the league has grown since then, buoyed by back-to-back popular rookie classes in 2024 (Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese) and 2025 (Paige Bueckers). Ogwumike entered the league in 2012 and became WNBPA president in 2016, so she has seen how far the league has come. With two expansion teams set to join in 2026, there are about to be more eyes than ever on the WNBA.

Storm's Nneka Ogwumike reveals ‘sick' reaction to WNBA All-Star Game draft

The post Storm's Nneka Ogwumike reveals 'sick' reaction to WNBA All-Star Game draft appeared first on ClutchPoints. The top three players on the Seattle Storm — Nneka Ogwumike, Skylar Diggins and Gabby Williams — are exhibiting great chemistry and are extremely motivated to win a championship together this season. That unified front will be put on pause during the 2025 WNBA All-Star Game, however. The fabulous trio will be separated when the action commences in Indiana's Gainbridge Fieldhouse on July 19. Ogwumike is not happy about it. MVP favorite Napheesa Collier picked Ogwumike and Diggins, while opposing team captain Caitlin Clark selected Williams. A divided Storm is making for some conflicted feelings among the players and fans. A competitive fire undoubtedly sizzles at practice, so the chance to battle it out in a fun exhibition contest is probably satisfying to some degree. But Ogwumike is not looking to square off against Williams. 'I'm sick,' the 2016 MVP and WNBA champion joked while speaking to the media, via the @useyourlegs X account. 'I'm not guarding her.' Williams, who sat beside Ogwumike during the press conference, relayed what Diggins said regarding the temporary split. 'My Shayla, my Shayla,' referencing the viral video of an emotional Tyrese Gibson crying about his daughter amid a custody battle (was ultimately granted joint custody). The former top-five draft pick will not be able to lean on her Storm teammates when she partakes in her first career WNBA All-Star Game. Williams will also have to face off with her former UConn cohorts, Unrivaled co-founders Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart. Still, the 28-year-old is just ecstatic to be recognized among the best in the league today. 'I'm obviously just happy to be there, honestly,' Williams said. 'The only thing that makes me nervous is that I'm going to be like a little lost puppy on the other team. I was looking forward to just like following them around and them showing me the reins, but I'm just looking forward to taking every moment in. It is going to be weird.' The Storm are surely in for a memorable Indianapolis experience. Perhaps this All-Star battle will allow Nneka Ogwumike, Gabby Williams and Skylar Diggins to have an even greater appreciation for the bond they built over the last couple of years. Sonia Citron's Nike Ja 3 'All-Star' Already slated to release in a number of upcoming colorways, the Nike Ja 3 is the upcoming signature model from Memphis Grizzlies' Ja Morant. The shoe is a staunch outlier from his previous two sneakers in the loud and aggressive design it offers, along with the color combinations to match. Here, we see the Nike Ja 3 in a predominantly black look with red flames bursting onto the uppers. They're based in an opaque red midsole as we see the Nike Swoosh outlined in yellow matching the spray painted 'A' to spell out 'JA.' The flames extend to the heel as all remaining logos are done in the neon yellow accent, making for an extremely hot pair to say the least.
