He revealed that UFC executive Hunter Campbell traveled to Dagestan to personally convince Makhachev to move up in weight so that Topuria could take over as the new lightweight champion.
'He [Hunter] came to see Islam, and they wanted Islam to move up. They want to make Topuria the champ at 155. They believe he can really sell fights,' Umar said.
'Islam doesn't want to give up his belt — he wants to fight at 155 too. Islam can take the 170 title, then return to 155 and hold both belts.'
The comments have left fans confused and speculating about UFC's intentions. One post summed it up:
'Lemme get this straight … Hunter came to Dagestan to convince Makhachev to go up? But not fight the BIGGEST FIGHT the UFC can make with him and Topuria?'

UFC announces return to Perth, Australia in September
The UFC made official on Monday its return to the city of Perth, Western Australia. The fourth-most populous city in Australia will host UFC Fight Night on Sunday, Sept. 28, 2025. It's the fourth time the city will host a UFC event, but it will be the first time the city will receive a UFC Fight Night, rather than a pay-per-view event. Perth previously staged UFC 221 in February of 2018, UFC 284 in February of 2023 and UFC 305 in August of 2024. Gilbert Burns in 'concussion protocol,' wants Daniel Rodriguez for UFC return
ABU DHABI – Gilbert Burns has a name in mind for his next UFC opponent. Burns (22-9 MMA, 15-9 UFC) is currently dealing with the physical aftermath of a first-round TKO loss to unbeaten Michael Morales at UFC Fight Night 256 in May, which marked a fourth consecutive defeat for the one-time welterweight title challenger. He hopes he's cleared by doctors in the coming months, however, and Burns said he's looking at a showdown with Daniel Rodriguez, who is on a three-fight winning streak after edging Kevin Holland on the scorecards at UFC 318 this month. "I'm looking toward December," Burn told MMA Junkie. "I had a little concussion, I'm still not able to come back, so I've still got to get a few more things in the protocol to get able to get back to training. I've still got to take it easy a bit. It was a hard one, but I'm looking toward December. I just saw Daniel Rodriguez just got a nice win against Kevin Holland. He's ranked now. I think that should be a fun one. Me and Daniel Rodriguez in December, maybe January." Burns said his concussion came with the knockout blow from Morales in the octagon. The 39-year-old said he's "feeling much better now," but it being intelligent with his recovery process and won't allow himself to do contact training until fully cleared.
