Team Makhachev Reveals UFC's Power Play to Elevate Ilia Topuria
As Islam Makhachev gears up for a move to welterweight, questions surrounding his lightweight exit continue to stir. Many expected him to face the rising Ilia Topuria in a blockbuster title clash—but that fight never materialized. Now, a new revelation from within Makhachev's camp offers a deeper look into why the bout was bypassed.

In a conversation captured by Adam Zubayraev and shared by Red Corner MMA, Umar Nurmagomedov—Makhachev's teammate—shared surprising insight.

He revealed that UFC executive Hunter Campbell traveled to Dagestan to personally convince Makhachev to move up in weight so that Topuria could take over as the new lightweight champion.
'He [Hunter] came to see Islam, and they wanted Islam to move up. They want to make Topuria the champ at 155. They believe he can really sell fights,' Umar said.
'Islam doesn't want to give up his belt — he wants to fight at 155 too. Islam can take the 170 title, then return to 155 and hold both belts.'
The comments have left fans confused and speculating about UFC's intentions. One post summed it up:
'Lemme get this straight … Hunter came to Dagestan to convince Makhachev to go up? But not fight the BIGGEST FIGHT the UFC can make with him and Topuria?'
Others questioned the terms:
'Seems like Makhachev declined the fight then was FORCED to go up…'
'Islam isn't active enough to defend both and I'm sure they gave him a choice either vacate and move up or stay at 155 and fight Topuria'.
With tensions simmering between both camps and the storyline only heating up, fans can only hope the fight eventually gets made. When the dust settles on UFC 317—and again when Makhachev squares off with Jack Della Maddalena—we might finally get some clarity. If the stars align, maybe Dana White and the UFC will circle back to the lightweight showdown fans actually want. Until then, all we can do is watch, wait, and keep the Twitter fingers ready.

Crowd will be behind retiring Dustin Poirier vs. Max Holloway at UFC 318
UFC 318 will culminate with the trilogy fight between Max Holloway and the retiring Dustin Poirier for Holloway's 'BMF' title on Saturday in New Orleans. Holloway (26-8 MMA) and Poirier (30-9, 1 NC) previously fought in 2012 and 2019, with Poirier winning both fights. The most recent meeting saw Poirier win a unanimous decision for the UFC interim lightweight championship in one of the promotion's most talked-about fights. Shifting to the trilogy fight, it's Poirier's final UFC fight, and the Smoothie King Center will play host to the festivities. It is Poirier's first fight in his home state in a decade, which means a great deal to the 36-year-old. 'If you chase your dreams, anything is possible,' Poirier said. Poirier confirmed rapper and New Orleans icon Lil Wayne will be part of his entrance for the fight, revealing that with a win, he wants Wayne to be part of the belt presentation ceremony. Holloway, despite being from Hawaii, wants the same treatment. Holloway showed mutual respect toward his rival but said he is embracing the role of fighting in enemy territory. 'It's gonna be a fun one, man,' Holloway said. 'It's gonna be a fun one. It's his last dance ... Bring out more of the boos, please. That's what I like to hear.' Holloway has held the symbolic 'BMF' title since UFC 300, when he knocked out Justin Gaethje. Neither fighter offered an exact prediction for the fight, but did say that they hope to put on one of the best fights in recent memory, similar to their April 2019 encounter. Nevertheless, Holloway-Poirier 3 tops a 14-fight card with main card festivities getting underway on ESPN+ pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. Gilbert Burns in 'concussion protocol,' wants Daniel Rodriguez for UFC return
ABU DHABI – Gilbert Burns has a name in mind for his next UFC opponent. Burns (22-9 MMA, 15-9 UFC) is currently dealing with the physical aftermath of a first-round TKO loss to unbeaten Michael Morales at UFC Fight Night 256 in May, which marked a fourth consecutive defeat for the one-time welterweight title challenger. He hopes he's cleared by doctors in the coming months, however, and Burns said he's looking at a showdown with Daniel Rodriguez, who is on a three-fight winning streak after edging Kevin Holland on the scorecards at UFC 318 this month. "I'm looking toward December," Burn told MMA Junkie. "I had a little concussion, I'm still not able to come back, so I've still got to get a few more things in the protocol to get able to get back to training. I've still got to take it easy a bit. It was a hard one, but I'm looking toward December. I just saw Daniel Rodriguez just got a nice win against Kevin Holland. He's ranked now. I think that should be a fun one. Me and Daniel Rodriguez in December, maybe January." Burns said his concussion came with the knockout blow from Morales in the octagon. The 39-year-old said he's "feeling much better now," but it being intelligent with his recovery process and won't allow himself to do contact training until fully cleared. "Let's see how the concussion protocol goes," Burns said. "That's one I'm looking forward to. With the brain you can't play it all. We've got to take it most serious. Most likely December or January. Let's see how it goes." This article originally appeared on MMA Junkie: Gilbert Burns in 'concussion protocol,' wants Daniel Rodriguez next
