Kota Kinabalu: Some 340 students from the B40 group at Stella Maris Tanjung Aru received school supplies, recently, thanks to a corporate social responsibility initiative by Yayasan Kosma in collaboration with Persatuan Keusahawanan Cekap Sabah (PKCS). The contribution included school bags, exercise books, stationery and lunch boxes aimed at easing the burden of low-income families.
Advertisement Yayasan Kosma Chairman, Dato' Zamri Mohamed, expressed his appreciation for the unity displayed at the event, which took place on the grounds of a church. 'This programme is a wonderful initiative. I witnessed strong unity and harmony among those involved, regardless of race or religion,' said Zamri. 'I was surprised to learn that 58pc of students here at Stella Maris are from Muslim families.' 'This shows we can share a meal together without politics, only unity. I'm very pleased with what we're doing here in Sabah. 'For Yayasan Kosma, our goal is to help everyone. There are no divisions between people and today, we are doing this at a church, no less,' he said.
Advertisement Zamri also noted that although Kosma is based in Pahang, the foundation is committed to fulfilling the wider mission of the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) by helping communities across Malaysia. 'Kosma allocates approximately RM5 million annually to support initiatives like these throughout the country, using funds derived from tax contributions. 'LHDN cannot meet every request alone, they get thousands of requests daily and that's why they work with foundations like ours. We aim to ensure states like Sabah, Sarawak, Perlis and Johor all receive equal attention,' he added. Zamri also commended the leadership of the Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Datuk Ewon Benedick, for his hands-on approach and visible impact in empowering cooperatives and community initiatives nationwide. PKCS Chairman, Dennison Indang, highlighted the unique challenges of poverty in urban areas like Tanjung Aru, where he said the B40 rate is high compared to others. 'In Pulau Gaya, for instance, over 95pc of households are in the B40 category. Urban poverty is more complex and persistent. Education is the most effective tool we have to end this cycle. 'When families struggle financially, dropout rates increase. Our goal is to break that cycle and motivate students. 'I myself am a product of such initiatives. I know how impactful they can be,' he explained. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? i-Saraan financial awareness programme empowers younger generation

GEORGE TOWN — The Employees Provident Fund's (EPF) i-Saraan programme is an important initiative in empowering the younger generation through financial knowledge and awareness. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying (picture) said aside from helping self-employed individuals such as small traders, farmers, fishermen and housewives, it is now also open to teenagers as young as 14 years old. 'This move will help to instil a savings culture and build financial management awareness from a young age so that future generations are better prepared and resilient in facing economic challenges,' she said in her speech at the EPF i-Saraan Contribution Presentation Ceremony for Tanjong B40 Students here today. The programme was attended by students and teachers from five schools: St. Xavier's Institution, Kolej Tingkatan Enam Hutchings, SMK Westlands, SMKA Perempuan Al-Mashoor, and the Penang Methodist Girls School. According to Lim, who is also the Tanjong Member of Parliament, each ringgit saved is an investment for the future, and through the i-Saraan scheme, contributors will receive a matching annual government incentive of 20 per cent, which is capped at RM500, with a lifetime maximum of RM5,000. Lim said that in 2024, the government allocated RM114.8 million for the i-Saraan scheme, benefiting more than 529,000 contributors. 'As a sign of my support for this initiative, I have taken the step to contribute RM10,000 to open i-Saraan accounts for 200 students from the B40 group. 'Each student will receive RM50 to start with, and I hope that this is not just about opening an account but also a symbol of our confidence in your potential to take this step towards financial literacy,' she said. — BERNAMA

No big price hikes for essentials in Perak since SST expansion, says ministry state director

IPOH: There have been no significant price hikes for essential items in Perak since the expansion of the Sales and Service Tax (SST) was implemented 16 days ago, according to the state Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry director. Datuk Kamalludin Ismail said that from July 1 to July 16, only one complaint related to price increases was recorded. "Between July 1 and 16, our enforcement team inspected 48 business premises involving 239 Stock Keeping Units across Perak to analyse and collect price data. "There was only one complaint recorded under Ops Kesan 4.0, which is currently being investigated. The trader involved has been asked to provide justification and detailed information regarding the price increase," he said during an Ops Kesan 4.0 programme at a hypermarket on Thursday (July 17). He added that out of the 48 premises inspected, seven were issued written notices under Section 21 of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011. He said the premises include locations in Ipoh, Manjung, Tapah, and Teluk Intan. "These notices require traders to provide additional information so we can determine if there are elements of unjustified price increases. "They must respond within six days. If profiteering is detected, further action including prosecution may follow," he said. When asked about claims that retailers are waiting to sell old stock before adjusting prices of new stock, Kamalludin said the matter will be investigated if such a case arises. "The Ministry will calculate based on several elements. We'll assess based on the formula, production cost, profit margins, and other factors. "For instance, if an item that previously cost RM5 is suddenly sold for RM15 without justification, it is deemed unreasonable and will be investigated," he said. On a separate matter, he also reminded the public to be smart when buying durians to avoid being cheated with pricing. He said that from a separate operation in Kuala Kangsar, a durian seller was found using an expired weighing scale. "Out of four premises inspected, action was taken against one, which was fined RM300 under Section 14(6) of the Weights and Measures Act 1972," he said. Kamalludin reminded consumers of their rights. "Buy only if you feel the price is reasonable. If not, don't waste your money. "Know your rights as buyers and lodge a report if you suspect unfair pricing. So far, there have been no complaints about durian prices," he added.
