Why Haryana govt has approved withdrawal of 8,600 govt job ads & what it will mean for aspirants
While all these jobs were advertised in different months of 2024, the Nayab Saini government advertised 5,600 constable posts on 16 August last year, just hours before the Election Commission of India's (ECI) announcement of the Haryana assembly elections, prompting the Congress to lodge a complaint with the ECI.
Gurugram: The Haryana government has given the go-ahead for the withdrawal of advertisements for more than 8,600 government jobs, saying they will be advertised again and filled under new Common Eligibility Test (CET) guidelines framed earlier this year, triggering fresh uncertainty among thousands of job aspirants.
Apart from the constable jobs, the Haryana government has also decided to withdraw the advertisements for 3,053 Group C job vacancies issued by the HSSC in 2024. In Haryana, Group C jobs refer to a significant category of government positions that typically involve clerical, technical, and various support roles across numerous state government departments, boards, corporations, and other government-controlled agencies.
A senior Haryana government official confirmed the decision, saying the withdrawn positions will now be filled based on the results of a fresh Common Eligibility Test (CET), the dates for which are expected to be announced soon.
Speaking to ThePrint, Bhupinder Chauhan, an HSSC member, said that while the Commission is yet to receive official communication from the government, he had learned of the impending decision.
'We, at the Commission, have gathered that the government has been receiving numerous representations from individuals and job aspirants. Since the last CET was held in 2022, many aspirants who had not attained the age of 18 at the time of the last CET but are now eligible expressed concerns about being left out and not getting a chance anytime soon. They wanted the recruitments to be done after holding a fresh CET so that they too could compete for the jobs,' Chauhan explained.
'As per my information, the government has taken a decision based on these representations. The recruitments will now be held on the basis of the Haryana Staff Selection Commission (Process of Recruitment of Group C and D posts) Rules, 2025. Under these rules, 10 times the candidates of the total number of jobs will be shortlisted, unlike four times under the earlier rules,' he added.
Himmat Singh, Chairman of the HSSC, told ThePrint that decisions regarding requisition of posts and withdrawal of advertisements lie with the government. Hence, he, as chairman of the HSSC, wasn't in a position to comment on it.
In a post on his official Instagram handle, he addressed candidates, saying, 'Dear candidates, we will soon announce the exam date for CET 2025 (Group C). Therefore, all candidates are advised to focus completely on their studies and stay away from any kind of rumours. The Commission extends its best wishes to all the upcoming examinees.'
According to HSSC rules, a person who clears the CET is considered for government jobs for 3 years from the date of result declaration. An improved score in a subsequent attempt restarts this 3-year validity period. The last CET for Group C posts was conducted in November 2022.
The government's decision to withdraw the advertisements has drawn sharp criticism from the Opposition, particularly the Congress.
Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala launched a scathing attack on the BJP government, accusing it of betraying the state's youth by withdrawing thousands of Group C job vacancies.
In a blistering statement and video posted on social media X, Surjewala said: 'The BJP has scripted a film of deception, fraud, and betrayal against Haryana's youth. The writer and actor of this film is Mr. Nayab Saini, the director is Mr. Manohar Lal Khattar, and the producer is Mr. Narendra Modi. The film is titled 'Fool the People, continue fooling them'.'
'On August 14, 2024, just three hours before the assembly election announcement, Mr. Nayab Saini dangled these 8,653 jobs before the youth, promising grand dreams and even vowing not to take the CM's oath until these jobs were filled. But it was all a hollow promise. Had the INLD government's move not been blocked in 1989, Haryana would have been a tax-free state in the country and would have the capacity to offer loans to other states. The BJP was supporting the INLD government from outside in 1989 as well as in 2000. However, it sided with Congress when it came to these projects. Humiliated by CM Siddaramaiah, cop now has Karnataka ministers persuading him to take back resignation

Baramani had sought to be relieved from active duties, saying he was unable to continue in his post after being humiliated by the chief minister at the public meeting on 28 April. Bengaluru: A police officer who was 'humiliated' by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at an event in April is 'now reporting for' routine duties after the senior Congress leader, his Cabinet colleagues and government officials persuaded him to withdraw his resignation. 'I have always been part of a disciplined department. I have conveyed my feelings to my superiors. My senior officers, the chief minister and the home minister have spoken about this matter. I am now reporting for my routine duties,' Baramani said in a video statement Thursday, circulated to the media. He added it was up to the government to decide on the next course of action. People aware of the developments said the officer had tried to resign the same day but the state government persuaded him to reconsider his decision. Though Baramani held off then, sources said he wrote an official resignation letter on 12 June but the state government did not forward it. He wrote another letter just about a week ago. This snowballed into another challenge for Siddaramaiah, already dealing with a strained relation between his government and the police force who have nursed a feeling of being scapegoated after the Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede last month. Five senior police officers, including Bengaluru city police commissioner B. Dayananda, were suspended as the government held them responsible for the deaths of 11 people in the stadium stampede that ensued during a surge of crowd at the stadium to celebrate the Royal Challengers Bengaluru;'s maiden IPL trophy win. The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) has quashed the Karnataka government's order suspending IPS officer Vikash Kumar Vikash, one of the suspended officers. The state government challenged the CAT order Wednesday. But some people, purportedly affiliated to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), managed to sneak into the event and raise slogans and wave black flags against Siddaramaiah as he made a speech. In a video of the incident, Siddaramaiah was seen summoning the senior police officer in a singular tone. 'Hey come here…who is the SP (superintendent of police). What are you doing,' Siddaramaiah is heard saying. The Additional SP of the district who rushed towards the CM, leaned forward. Following that, Siddaramaiah gestured in a manner that suggested he intended to slap the official, who withdrew quickly to avoid the contact. In his resignation letter, Baramani said he responded to the CM's call on stage since the senior most officials in the district were not present. 'I was humiliated for a mistake I did not make,' he wrote, adding the insult was played on loop by TV channels. He said his family also broke down and there was a 'deathly silence' at their home when he returned from the event that day. He added his colleagues or anyone from the government did not protest the CM's actions or even attempted to console him, adding to his mental agony. He added this was not just his grievance or those who perform their duties in a uniform 'but of all government employees.' 'Issue public apology' Opposition parties in Karnataka have used the incident to corner Siddaramaiah, already facing a fair share of challenges including the speculation of being replaced later this year, mounting charges of corruption, his legislators calling out administrative lapses in their own government and a growing fund crunch that has crippled development activities among other problems. 'This incident stands as a stark reminder of what happens when sincere, honest, and committed officers are insulted in public instead of being appreciated for their service. We demand that Siddaramaiah set aside his ego, issue a public apology to Narayana Baramani, and urge the officer to reconsider his decision,' Amit Malviya, the BJP's IT cell chief, said in a post. This was not the first instance of Siddaramaiah losing his cool. That the video of the incident was, and is being, played on loop on TV, has not helped the CM either. The BJP's R.
