Crews battling wildfire near Churchill Falls in Labrador
CHURCHILL FALLS — A wildfire is burning near a town in Newfoundland and Labrador that's home to a massive power generating station.
NL Hydro says a fire burning near Churchill Falls has caused power interruptions in Labrador West and Wabush.
The utility says the power has been restored Wednesday night, adding that electricity generation at the plant hasn't been affected.
The provincial government says the wildfire is about one kilometre away from Churchill Falls and is moving east, away from the town.
NL Hydro said crews will mobilize again in the morning as the fire continues to move away. It also warned about a brief outage in the Town of Churchill Falls this evening.
Two water bombers have been deployed to help battle the fire.
Officials say the Trans-Labrador Highway is closed between Churchill Falls and Goose Bay, nearly 300 kilometres to the east.

Bay and Algoma Buskers Festival marks 10th year
While some intense weather caused some concern over the weekend, the 2025 Bay and Algoma Buskers Festival was a success, organizers said. The 10th annual festival ran Saturday and Sunday in the Bay and Algoma neighbourhood. It featured various food and merchandise vendors, and performers from Thunder Bay, and around the world, including: Steve Goodtime Seb and Fritzzz Fraser Hooper Skye the Guy Kasmir the Hungry The Kidd Creed Statuary Women in Silk Taiko Drummers Phineas Gauge, and the Bay Street Bastards. Things got underway later than planned on Sunday, due to a heavy downpour that hit the city late in the morning, said Uriel Lubuk, one of the event's coordinators. "It was awesome to see a lot of the arts and culture community come out," he said. "Awesome vendors, lots of smiley faces, lots of kids." "We've always wanted free family fun," Lubuk said. "People come down, tip the buskers, see something new and amazing that they haven't seen before." One of the local buskers was Zachary Ross, who performed both Saturday and Sunday. "I've started learning how to do folk music," he said. "I host open mics at Lakehead Beer Company, and yeah, just love the community and love going out to play." "I think it's a great time," he said of the festival. "I love seeing everyone out here." Lubuk said organizers are already turning their attention to next year's buskers festival "and just seeing how we could push through, do a little bit better next year, but just keep the vibes the same."

Baristas show off their skills in last day of national competition
The 2025 Canadian Barista Championships wrapped up in Edmonton on July 27, 2025. (CTV News Edmonton/Connor Hogg) Coffee aromatics filled the Oliver Exchange Building 2 Sunday as the 2025 Canadian Barista Championships wrapped up its final day of a three-day competition. Eighteen competitors from across the country – including five hometown heroes – were pulling espresso shots and steaming milk in hopes of claiming the top prize. The winner of the championship will have the chance to compete in Milan, Italy for the World Barista Championship in October. Santiago Lopez, a competitor and co-owner of the Colombian Coffee Bar and Roastery, said the event helps move the industry forward. 'We get to showcase the quality of coffee that we have in the city, and its good to just showcase the city in general,' Lopez told CTV News Edmonton. 'Over the last 10 years, the industry in Edmonton has really evolved … and now we have a bunch of different, good coffee roasters and people that really appreciate coffee.' He said people are treating coffee as part of their morning ritual, rather than a commodity. Each competitor was required to complete a 15-minute 'performance,' preparing four espressos, four milk-based drinks and four unique signature beverages. Every performance was evaluated by a panel of 34 judges. But Lopez said the event wasn't just a competition. 'The intent for us all is to show other people in coffee, in the city, that we can get to higher levels, that we can push each other, that we're not in competition, that we're collaborators,' said Lopez.
