Ex-Guardians fan favorite Josh Naylor predicted to land with AL contender at deadline

Yahoo5 days ago
The Cleveland Guardians decided to cut ties with Josh Naylor during the offseason in a deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks. While the Guardians could use Naylor right now, considering he's still one of the better-hitting first basemen in Major League Baseball, it's very possible that he could be on the move once again.
Some believe that the Diamondbacks will be sellers, as they haven't played well due to the mounting injuries they've dealt with. For Naylor, however, he's still hitting .294 with 11 home runs and 58 RBIs.
Plugging him onto a contending team would be a wise decision, and Sportsnaut recently predicted that to be the case. They predicted Naylor would be traded to the Seattle Mariners at the deadline.
'A sweep over the Detroit Tigers heading into the All-Star Break provided the Seattle Mariners with some much-needed momentum. It should also be enough of a push for president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto to be an aggressive buyer at the MLB trade deadline. At the summer break, Mariners first basemen ranked 18th in OPS (.703). Diamondbacks first baseman Josh Naylor is on an expiring contract, reducing the acquisition cost for Seattle,' they wrote.
MORE:
The Mariners arguably have the best pitching staff in Major League Baseball when everything is going their way, but it's also tough to ignore their offensive flaws at times.
If the Mariners are looking to go all in at the deadline, adding a competent first baseman has to be in their plans, and Naylor would be exactly that.
Perhaps better than anything for the Mariners is the fact that Naylor hits free agency at the end of the campaign. If things don't work out, they could allow him to walk and not have to worry about any money being on their books.

Yankees' Pursuit of Third Baseman Eugenio Suarez Ramps Up Ahead of Deadline

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The New York Yankees have waited too long to address their need at third base, but it seems they'll finally do so before the trade deadline passes. Eugenio Suárez was already one of the most-coveted players at the deadline, but his recent performances are increasing his value even more. MLB insider Jeff Passan believes the Yankees are still one of the best fits for him. PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JULY 20: Eugenio Suarez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks celebrates after hitting a three run home run against the St. Louis Cardinals during the first inning at Chase Field on July 20,... PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JULY 20: Eugenio Suarez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks celebrates after hitting a three run home run against the St. Louis Cardinals during the first inning at Chase Field on July 20, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona. More"Suárez is in a contract year and playing like one of the best players in baseball," wrote Passan. "Only Cal Raleigh and Aaron Judge have more home runs than his 35. Despite turning 34 years old before the trade deadline, Suárez is sitting near career highs in isolated power and wRC+ (which measures overall offensive performance)." "His fielding metrics have declined in recent years, but he's still an acceptable defender at third base," added Passan. "Even if the Diamondbacks don't offload all their free agents-to-be, Suárez could be moved because they've got Jordan Lawlar raking in Triple-A and primed to take over at third." Suárez would certainly be an upgrade even defensively over the rotation of players the Yankees trot out onto the field right now. League average defense would help the Bronx Bombers out tremendously, but his bat is the prized possession. In the three games that have been played since baseball resumed from the All-Star break, Suárez has been one of the game's best hitters. He's boosted his home run tally up to 35 heading into Monday's game against the Houston Astros, and he doesn't look to be slowing down any time soon. "Best fits: New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, Seattle Mariners, Milwaukee Brewers, Detroit Tigers, San Francisco Giants," wrote Passan. However, there are a lot of teams that will be vying for Suárez's services just looking at the list above. The Yankees will certainly have to provide a stellar package going back to Arizona to land him. More MLB: Cardinals May Keep Ryan Helsley at Deadline, Aim for Better Return in Winter, Per Report

Chris Paul agrees to return to Los Angeles Clippers

File Photo by Aaron Josefczyk/UPI | License Photo July 21 (UPI) -- Veteran point guard Chris Paul agreed to a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Clippers. Paul, who is entering his 21st season, started 82 games in 2024-25. Sources told ESPN, The Athletic and NBA insider Chris Haynes about the $3.6 million agreement Monday. Paul, 40, averaged a career-low 8.8 points per game last season for the San Antonio Spurs. He also logged 7.4 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.3 steals per appearance. The veteran point guard is set to play for his fourth team in four years, including previous tenures with the Golden State Warriors and Phoenix Suns. Paul, a 12-time All-Star, 11-time All-NBA selection, nine-time All-Defensive Team selection, six-time steals champion and five-time assist champion averaged 17 points. 9.2 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game over the first 1,354 appearances of his career. The No. 4 overall pick by the New Orleans Hornets in the 2005 NBA Draft was a fixture for the Clippers from 2011-12 through 2016-17, playing alongside fellow stars Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordan and Jamal Crawford, among others. Paul led the league in assists twice and was the league-leader in steals three times during that span, which included five consecutive seasons with at least 51 wins for the Clippers. He will now join a Clippers roster that includes James Harden, Bradley Beal, Kawhi Leonard, John Collins, Ivica Zubac and Brook Lopez. The Clippers lost to the Memphis Grizzlies in their Summer League finale Sunday in Las Vegas.
