Gary Lineker's emotional farewell marks end of an era at BBC
, the face of
BBC
's '
Match of the Day
' for over 26 years, bid an emotional farewell on Sunday, May 25, 2025, concluding a broadcasting chapter that began in 1999. His departure follows controversy over a social media post that sparked accusations of
antisemitism
and led to his early exit from the corporation.
Lineker, 64, opened his final broadcast with a poignant remark: 'It wasn't meant to end this way,' subtly referencing the circumstances surrounding his departure. Throughout the show, tributes poured in from colleagues and football legends, including Alan Shearer, Micah Richards, Ian Wright, and Peter Shilton.
A montage celebrated his dual legacy as a prolific striker and a beloved presenter.

At the program's conclusion, Lineker was presented with a commemorative cap and a golden boot by Shearer and Richards. Fighting back tears, he expressed gratitude: 'It's been an absolute privilege to have hosted
Match of the Day
for a quarter of a century. It's been utterly joyous.' He added, 'Rather like my football career, everyone else did all the hard work, and I got the plaudits.'
Potential reason for his departure
Live Events
Lineker's departure was precipitated by his sharing of an
video from the Palestine Lobby, which featured a rat emoji, a symbol historically associated with antisemitic propaganda. Upon realizing the offensive nature of the imagery, he promptly deleted the post and issued an apology: 'I have stood up for minorities and humanitarian issues and all forms of racism all of my life, including, of course, antisemitism, which I absolutely abhor.'
Lineker will lose out on an estimated £800,000 (NZ$1.8m) after being forced to leave without a pay-off. Sources close to the corporation say the decision to drop him was made primarily by BBC chiefs who had run out of patience with his outspoken political views.
Despite initial plans to continue hosting the FA Cup and the 2026 World Cup, Lineker and the BBC agreed to part ways entirely. BBC Director General Tim Davie acknowledged Lineker as 'a defining voice in football coverage for the BBC for over two decades.'
Future of 'Match of the Day'
The BBC has announced that Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman, and Gabby Logan will take over presenting duties for Match of the Day starting next season. Lineker offered his well-wishes: 'I'd like to wish Gabby, Mark, and Kelly all the very best when they sit in this chair. The programme is in the best of hands.'
As the final credits rolled, Andrea Bocelli's 'Time to Say Goodbye' played, underscoring the end of an era in
British sports broadcasting
.
The former England captain became the BBC's highest-paid presenter, having initially started out as a BBC Radio Five Live presenter. He also worked on Grandstand during his early years in broadcasting.
His podcast, The Rest Is Football, will have its last episode on BBC Sounds this week, but The Rest Is History will continue on the platform.

Saiyaara leaps to 62nd spot in all-time biggest Hindi hits, outpaces Shah Rukh Khan's Dilwale, Salman Khan's Bodyguard and Prabhas's Salaar:Part 1- Ceasefire
Mohit Suri's directorial venture, Saiyaara, starring newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, has become a box office sensation. The romantic drama has swiftly climbed to 62nd position among Hindi cinema's biggest hits, amassing Rs 153.25 crore in just six days. Saiyaara has surpassed major films like Dilwale, Bodyguard, and Salaar, driven by strong word-of-mouth and consistent weekday collections. In a stunning box office run, Saiyaara, directed by Mohit Suri and featuring newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda , has surged from the 84th to the 62nd position on the list of the biggest Hindi hits of Indian cinema within just 24 hours. With its 6-day total now standing at an impressive Rs 153.25 crore, the romantic drama has officially leapfrogged major Bollywood hits including Shah Rukh Khan 's Dilwale (Rs 148.42 Cr), Salman Khan 's Bodyguard (Rs 148.52 Cr), and even the high-profile Salaar: Cease Fire – Part 1 (Rs 152.65 Cr). This unexpected climb reflects not just a growing word-of-mouth wave, but also the sharp rise in weekday collections that signal strong audience retention. After a thunderous Rs 21.5 crore opening on Friday, the film jumped to Rs 26 crore on Saturday, followed by a stellar Rs 35.75 crore on Sunday. While Monday usually sees a drop, Saiyaara held well with Rs 24 crore, and then bounced back on Tuesday to Rs 25 crore, showing a rare 4.17% jump mid-week. Wednesday's early estimate of Rs 21 crore sealed its entry into the Rs 150 crore club, and more crucially, into the elite list of top 65 Hindi films of all time. What's remarkable is how Saiyaara has managed to outperform films backed by massive star power and colossal budgets. While Dilwale (featuring SRK and Kajol) and Bodyguard (starring Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor ) came with pre-installed fanbases, Saiyaara has largely relied on emotional storytelling, soulful music, and fresh faces. Even Salaar, headlined by pan-India star Prabhas and made on a over Rs 200 crore budget, has now been overtaken in the Hindi domestic made more than Rs 400 crore across Hindi , Telugu and other languages. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indonesia: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search ads Search Now Undo With one more weekday and a second weekend ahead, many now believe Saiyaara could enter the top 50 club, possibly overtaking films like Sitaare Zameen Par, Raid 2 and Bajirao Mastani to break into the Top 50. For Mohit Suri, this marks a career-high resurgence after a hiatus, and for Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, it sets a dreamlike debut benchmark. The industry is taking note — not just of the numbers — but of the shift in audience preferences, where performance and content can now triumph over brand value and spectacle. As of now, Saiyaara stands tall at No. 62 — but it's clear this journey is far from over.

Mexico President Criticises Chicharito For Sexist Remarks: 'Has A Lot To Learn'
Last Updated: Mexican footballer Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez is facing criticism from President Claudia Sheinbaum for sexist comments. Mexican football star Javier 'Chicharito" Hernandez is facing criticism from Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum and others for comments about gender roles posted on his social media accounts. 'Chicharito is a very good soccer player," Sheinbaum stated at a news conference Wednesday. 'But when it comes to his opinion on women … he still has a lot to learn." She characterised the former Mexico international's views as 'very sexist." The former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker, currently playing for Chivas, is injured and missed the first two matches of Mexico's Apertura tournament. Over the weekend, he shared several reels and videos, primarily on Instagram. 'Don't be afraid to be women, to allow yourselves to be led by a man," the 37-year-old Hernandez said. 'Women, you are failing, you are eradicating masculinity, making society hypersensitive." Hernandez, the all-time leading scorer for the Mexican national team with 52 goals, returned to Mexico last year on a two-year deal with Chivas, the team where he began his professional career in 2006. 'You women need to learn to accept and honor masculinity," he said in another one of his posts. In another video, he stated: 'You want a man to provide, but for you, cleaning is patriarchal oppression… interesting." Sheinbaum, a 63-year-old scientist, became the first female president in the country's 200-year history last year. 'I'm a mother, I'm a grandmother, I'm also a housewife," the president added Wednesday. 'But I'm also the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. Women can be whatever we want." Hernandez is a divorced father of two who often kneels in the middle of the pitch to pray before matches. He began creating content for a YouTube channel, showcasing his life as a player with West Ham and his marriage. Hernandez had a low profile on social media before hiring life coach Diego Dreyfus, to whom many attribute much of 'Chicharito's" new persona. His recent statements have sparked criticism, with some urging him to focus on football, considering his performance since returning to the Mexican league last year has not met expectations. Hernandez, who also played for Bayer Leverkusen, West Ham, and Sevilla, has scored just two goals in 25 matches in his first two tournaments back in Mexico. A few hours after the president's remarks, Hernandez was fined by the Gender and Diversity Commission of the Mexican Soccer Federation and by Chivas. 'A few days ago, on the social platform Javier Chicharito Hernández made statements that promote sexist stereotypes that are considered media violence and go against gender equality in the sport," a statement from the federation said. The federation did not disclose the amount of the fine but warned of a more severe penalty if he repeats the offense. Chivas didn't mention Hernandez by name when announcing its fine, only stating that the team opposes 'behavior that reinforces stereotypes that limit the freedom, respect, and full development of all people, both inside and outside of sports." This is the first time the federation has sanctioned a player for misogynistic comments. Earlier this year, businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego, the owner of the Mazatlán and Puebla clubs, made harsh statements about female journalists and was left unpunished. Chicharito has been banned from the national team since 2019 after he, along with other players, organised an unauthorised party in New York following a game against the United States.
