As blasting continues unabated in Aravallis, Nuh administration lodges FIR, orders border demarcation
Laxmi Narayan, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, told The Indian Express he reached the site on June 27 with officials from the State Enforcement Bureau after receiving complaints from the Pathrili village. The village is located on the border of Haryana and Rajasthan. While Rajasthan allows mining via leases, all such activities have been banned in Haryana by the Supreme Court.
The official said the alleged illegal miners fled with their machinery by the time the team reached, but they saw some of the trucks that had damaged substantial hillocks in the protected Aravallis.
Speaking with The Indian Express, the SDM said, 'We will take strict action against all those responsible. An FIR was filed over the weekend. I have ordered that a fresh and clear demarcation of the border be done by the mining department by erecting new pillars and signboards. We will assess and know the full damage done thereafter.'
He said the First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against unknown persons under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act.
Mining in the Aravalli region in the Gurgaon, Faridabad, and Nuh districts has been prohibited by the Supreme Court since 2002.
In May, the Supreme Court had taken exception to the Haryana Government's alleged inaction against illegal mining in the Aravallis in Nuh. The top court had noted that the mining mafia in the region seemed to be protecting the errant officials aiding the illegalities.
The apex court sought a detailed report from the Haryana Government by July 15, and said it found the chief secretary's affidavit evasive and insufficient for shifting the onus to the forest department.
In June, the Haryana Government began efforts to restore 25,000 hectares of degraded forest area in the Aravallis — long been hailed as the 'lungs' of the National Capital Region (NCR).
The Aravalli range passes through Gurgaon, Nuh, Mahendragarh, Rewari, Mahendergarh, and Charkhi Dadri districts of Haryana. Nuh has the largest recorded forest area among these, with 14,606 hectares.
The range, which extends from Southwest Gujarat in Champaner to Northeast Delhi and Haryana, acts as a natural barrier against incursion of sand, loo, and dust from the Thar desert.

Street vendors demand action against zonal officials for demolishing 41 authorised shops near Ripon Buildings
The Chennai Street Vendors Federation and the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) submitted a petition to the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) requesting disciplinary action against officials of Royapuram zone responsible for the demolition of more than 40 authorised shops near Central railway station and Ripon Buildings and allot space for the vendors who were evicted from the spot recently. According to the petitioners, 41 vendors had been legally authorised by the GCC to run shops at the spot. They had received a written approval in December 2024. During the eviction drive, carried out in the early morning of July 12, the GCC and police officials demolished the shops without prior notice or presenting any official order, the CITU alleged. The union members cited sections under the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014, which outlined the procedures and safeguards against eviction and urged the GCC to take action against the officials responsible for the 'wrongful eviction'. Street vendors have planned further protests if the GCC takes no action, said G. Selva, Chennai Central secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Katta Ravi Teja, Regional Deputy Commissioner (North), said an inspection would carried out soon to ascertain the reason for the eviction, and if the vendors were authorised by the GCC.

Prostitution racket running under the garb of spa service busted in Palam Vihar, 1 held: Police
An alleged prostitution racket — running under the garb of a spa service at Palam Vihar — was busted on Wednesday with the help of decoy customers, said the Gurugram Police. The operation led to the arrest of a spa manager. A special team, led by Inspector Vijender, sent decoy customers to the two spa centres, where managers allegedly agreed to provide prostitution services. At one of the two spas, police said, a woman at the reception allegedly admitted to facilitating prostitution. During questioning, police claimed, the manager and the woman admitted to running an alleged sex racket. Cases have been registered against the spa owners and operators under relevant sections of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act at Palam Vihar police station. Further investigation is underway, police said. This latest development comes a day after the police cracked down on another similar alleged prostitution racket operating under the guise of a spa. Three accused were arrested and subsequently remanded to two weeks of judicial custody. The Gurugram Police have busted similar rackets in the past as well. Last year, in May, the city police arrested 10 people, including foreign women, from a hotel in Sector 57. Among the six women arrested, two each were from Bangladesh and Uzbekistan, who allegedly admitted to having engaged in prostitution. In January 2023, 11 people were arrested, including owners and managers of two spa centres in Gurgaon, for allegedly running a similar operation in the garb of a massage parlour.

HC quashes case against Revanth Reddy
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy received a relief with the Telangana High Court, on Thursday, quashing a case registered against him under the provisions of the Prevention of Atrocities against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Act. The case was pending before the Special Sessions Judge for Trial of cases under the POA against SCs/STs Act-cum-VII Additional District Sessions Judge of Ranga Reddy at L.B. Nagar. Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya, pronouncing the verdict in a criminal petition filed by Mr. Revanth Reddy seeking to quash the FIR, said that Mr. Revanth Reddy, third accused in the case, was not present at the scene of offence when the crime was 'said to have been committed'. Since the accused was not present at the time of commission of the crime, invoking the special Act would not arise, the judge said. She noted that the complainant could not make out the offence against Mr. Revanth Reddy. The special Act was invoked against him without any legal or factual basis, she said. The case was contrary to the contents mentioned in the charge-sheet. Going by the facts of the case and the details mentioned in the charge-sheet, the HC can exercise powers under Section 484 of the Criminal Procedure Code in the present case, she said. An advocate B.S. Rao, appearing for the de-facto complainant N. Peddi Raju, brought to the notice of the judge that the complainant had five days ago, filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a direction to transfer hearing of the case to any other High Court. Referring to contention of the complainant about the petition in Supreme Court for transfer of the case, the judge said that 'the parties are at liberty to take whatever steps they intend to take, but this court has passed its orders as it is the duty of the court to pass orders'. The case was being heard by the HC since September 22, 2020. A co-ordinate bench of the HC heard contentions of the parties till April 15, 2024. Eventually, the Acting Chief Justice of the HC assigned the matter to the present bench. The matter was heard by the bench on April 25, May 2 and June 14 of this year. The senior counsel appearing for Revanth Reddy, the Public Prosecutor and the counsel for the de-facto complainant presented their contentions. After hearing their extensive arguments only, the bench had reserved orders in the matter, the judge said.
