Hungry Green spearheads strong Australian major charge

Yahoo22-04-2025
A hungry Hannah Green is eyeing a fast start as she strives to finally shed her unwanted tag of one-major wonder at the rich and prestigious Chevron Championship in Texas.
After a stellar three-win season on the LPGA Tour in 2024, Green will spearhead a seven-strong Australian charge at women's golf's first major of the year starting on Thursday.
The world No.5 has emerged as one of the game's most consistent performers but yearns to contend more at the sport's biggest events having not featured at the business end since finishing tied for fifth at the 2022 Women's PGA Championship.
"It's probably the last three or four years I haven't really been able to do that," Green said on a Zoom call from the US on Tuesday.
"So when I look at it, just not completely through stats, I feel like I never get off to a good start in the tournament (at the majors) so I'm hoping that round one, if I am not having my best performance, I can kind of still keep myself into at least the weekend.
"But I know sometimes I feel like I put too much pressure on myself.
"Obviously, I'm coming into this major with probably one of the best rankings I've ever had, and probably more expectation from other people as well as myself.
"So I just want to make sure that I'm not putting too much pressure on myself."
It has been six years since the Perth prodigy won the 2019 Women's PGA at just 22.
Top-five showings at the past two Olympics, without landing a medal in Tokyo or Paris, have given Green a taste of being in the mix for golf's greatest spoils.
While unable to pull off an unprecedented title hat-trick, the now-28-year-old warmed up nicely for her latest crack at major glory with a tie for ninth at the LA Championship on Sunday.

Green hopes to carry the happy vibes to the testing Carlton Woods Country Club.
"I always enjoy playing golf in California. I don't know what it is about it, to be honest, but it was nice to have a top-10 finish going into the Chevron Championship," she said.
"Usually it's the opposite way. Usually I don't play well the week before so I'm hoping that I can use a little bit of the form that I showed and bring it into this week."
Green's lacklustre pre-Chevron Championship form has translated into missed cuts the past two years, which have served as vital lessons for the West Australian.
The five-time LPGA Tour winner hopes a more meticulous preparation will yield a better result in 2025.
"So I'm hoping I can get off to a better start, kind of wipe the slate, the bad memories that I perhaps have at this championship," Green said.
"A new venue here in Houston and start fresh and have a good championship."
Dual major winner Minjee Lee also enters the $US8 million event fresh off a top 10 in Los Angeles.
Steph Kyriacou, with a top-20 in LA, Gabriela Ruffels, Grace Kim, Hira Naveed and rising Sydney star Cassie Porter, on her major champion debut, round out the Australian contingent.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes comments on incredible catch at NFL FLAG Championships

This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke to Alexia Gallagher, Executive Director of the NFL Foundation, and Stephanie Kwok, the head of Flag Football, to discuss the impactful youth development through flag football. "NFL FLAG-In-School, we want to ensure that underserved youth have every opportunity to play and that we're helping to level the playing field," said Gallagher, "Those teachers have access to all the resources available to stay healthy and fit. We believe that playing flag football is one of the best ways to do that. When we talk about youth health and wellness and how our campaign was focused on physical wellness, over the years, we expanded our youth health and wellness work to include mental wellness as well, and really to ensure that our work supports the whole child so physically through grant partnerships like the one that we have with GENYOUth on the NFL FLAG-In-School program." The Kansas City Chiefs often highlight youth flag football teams in the community, promoting the sport and its impact on the future. All players in the program have the opportunity to learn from legendary NFL athletes and staff. Patrick Mahomes was one of the many on social media commenting on an incredible touchdown reception during a boys' flag football game on Saturday. "There's so many NFL players that grew up playing flag football that it was a part of their elementary school days, even beyond into middle school as well," said Kwok, "So I think hearing when they share that experience, when they share that they play flag football, that it helps with their early exposure to football, and it helps with their skills development, that's a route that you can take. You can start with flag football, you can move on from there to tackle football, to either playing in the NFL, and then also, though, now there's that opportunity right for women to play football through flag football, and that's an opportunity that they didn't have before. Now, you can play in high school, you can play in college, and you can play in the Olympics alongside men and NFL players. I think that's what's special about flag football. You see everyone playing flag football, from NFL players to our current national flag team players to college and high school players, to just kids in gym and physical education class. That's what shows, I think, how truly accessible and inclusive it is." NFL FLAG-In-School is a critical entry point for millions of students to get moving in school. By providing free flag football equipment and a standards-based curriculum to schools, the program empowers educators to motivate students with a fun and inclusive activity designed for all skill levels.

Today in Chicago History: Special Olympics debuts at Soldier Field

Here's a look back at what happened in the Chicago area on July 20, according to the Tribune's archives. Is an important event missing from this date? Email us. Flashback: Apollo 11's voyage to the moon kept Chicagoans spellbound in a time of tumultWeather records (from the National Weather Service, Chicago) 1924: Sybil Bauer, a Chicago native and Northwestern sophomore, won the gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke in the 1924 Paris Olympics. Her time was a world-record 1:23.20 seconds. Vintage Chicago Tribune: Summer Olympians from the area who won goldBauer didn't start competing in events until she was a teenager at Schurz High School. Soon thereafter, however, she became the first great female swimmer of the backstroke. Bauer set 23 world records — holding at one point all existing records for women in backstroke from 50 to 440 yards, according to the International Swimming Hall of Fame — and won six consecutive AAU 100-yard backstroke championships, according to the Olympic Games. Her greatest feat may have taken place in Bermuda on Oct. 8, 1922, when Bauer became the first woman to beat a world record held by a man. She completed a 440-yard backstroke race in 6 minutes, 24 seconds — almost four seconds faster than the old record held by Harold Krueger of Honolulu. She was engaged to Edward Sullivan, then sports editor of the New York Evening Graphic and future television show host, but was stricken with cancer and died in 1927. Bauer was just 23 years old. Also in 1924: Johnny Weissmuller — the Austrian born, Chicago raised future 'Tarzan' actor — won gold at the Paris Olympics in swimming. He won five gold medals in the 1924 and 1928 Olympic Games. 1944: In a speech broadcast to the delegates inside Chicago Stadium from a train car at a naval base on the Pacific Ocean, President Franklin D. Roosevelt accepted the nomination for a fourth term during the Democratic National Convention at Chicago Stadium. Roosevelt was en route to Hawaii to join military brass debating strategies for the Pacific theater during World War II. Vintage Chicago Tribune: Tradition of acceptance speeches at political conventions began in Chicago'You in this convention are aware of what I have sought to gain for the nation, and you have asked me to continue,' FDR said in accepting its nomination. Roosevelt was reelected Nov. 7, 1944, but died April 12, 1945. 1968: About 1,000 children with intellectual disabilities ranging in age from 8 to 18 competed in the first Special Olympics, which took place at Soldier Field. Responding to a written proposal from Chicago Park District employee Anne Burke, a $25,000 check from the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation was forwarded here to help start the games, courtesy of the foundation's executive vice president, Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Vintage Chicago Tribune: The first Special Olympics at Soldier Field — 55 years agoThe initial one-day outing included participants from more than 20 states and Canada. Admission was free, but with little publicity and a basic lack of understanding, not many showed up besides friends and relatives of the youngsters. Still, the spirit was the same as if the stadium was packed, and the event was considered a huge success by those in attendance. 1992: Jeff Erickson escaped from the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse. The con man was convicted of robbing a string of Chicago-area banks with his wife, Jill Erickson. Vintage Chicago Tribune: Jailbreak!!!When the Hanover Park duo was caught in 1991, she was mortally wounded in a chase with FBI officers and he was arrested and taken to the Metropolitan Correctional Center. But as he was being led from the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse on July 20, 1992, Erickson uncuffed his hands with a handcuff key, disarmed a guard and fatally shot Deputy U.S. Marshal Roy 'Bill' Frakes and court security Officer Harry Belluomini, a retired Chicago police officer. Gregor Brown called up to Lions tour over concerns of the fitness of lock Joe McCarthy

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Scotland second rower Gregor Brown has been called up to the British and Irish Lions' tour of Australia because of concerns over the fitness of lock Joe McCarthy. Brown was to join Andy Farrell's squad in Melbourne on Sunday to provide cover for Tuesday's final midweek match against a First Nations and Pasifika XV. McCarthy left the field in the 44th minute of Saturday's 27-19 victory over the Wallabies because of a foot issue that makes him in doubt for the Lions' attempt at clinching the three-test series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday. 'It was niggling away at Joe. We got him off. Hopefully we got him off in time,' said head coach Farrell, who revealed that the Ireland player also has heel pain due to plantar fasciitis. Brown joins Rory Sutherland and Ewan Ashman in leaving Scotland's tour of New Zealand to link up with the Lions. All three of them started Friday's 41-12 victory over Samoa in Auckland. The Lions are now 6-0 in their Australian tour after wins over Super Rugby franchises Western Force, Queensland Reds , Waratahs and Brumbies and an Australia-New Zealand invitational XV. ___ AP rugby:
