Machac downs Davidovich for first ATP title in Acapulco

Yahoo02-03-2025
Tomas Machac captured his first ATP title on Saturday, beating Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-6 (8/6), 6-2 to win the Mexico Open in Acapulco.
Machac, the eighth seed who was ranked just 65th in the world a year ago and came into the week ranked 25th, is projected to make his top 20 debut when the new rankings are released on Monday.
The 24-year-old delivered a formidable display on serve, winning 37 of 39 first-serve points and saving a set point at 5/6 in the first-set tiebreaker with a thundering serve that drew an error from Davidovich.
He was also impressive from the baseline, using his forehand to dictate rallies as he posted his second win in two matches against Davidovich, the world number 48.
Machac is the second Czech player to win the Mexico Open, after Jiri Novak in 1998.
He's also the third first-time winner this season, following Alexandre Muller in Hong Kong in January and 18-year-old Brazilian Joao Fonseca in Buenos Aires in February.
It was a second straight ATP runner-up finish for Davidovich, who wasted two match points in a loss to Serbia's Miomir Kecmanovic in the Delray Beach final on February 16.

FA clears Lucas Paqueta of betting charges after long investigation

Lucas Paqueta Cleared of Spot-Fixing Charges as West Ham Respond Paqueta's Reputation Reinstated after Lengthy FA Investigation Lucas Paqueta can finally breathe again. After nearly two years of suspicion, delay and professional limbo, the West Ham midfielder has been cleared of spot-fixing charges that had threatened to derail both his Premier League career and international aspirations. The Football Association had accused the Brazilian of deliberately receiving yellow cards in order to manipulate betting markets, citing four matches between November 2022 and August 2023. But following a thorough hearing, an independent Regulatory Commission dismissed those charges — drawing a line under one of the most closely scrutinised integrity cases in recent English football memory. Photo IMAGO Player Grateful After 'Extremely Serious Accusations' From the outset, Paqueta maintained his innocence — a position he restated with poise and emotion following the FA's announcement. 'Since the first day of this investigation, I have maintained my innocence against these extremely serious accusations,' he said. 'I can't say anything more at this time, but I would like to express how grateful I am to God and how eager I am to return to playing football with a smile on my face. 'To my wife who never let go of my hand, to West Ham United, to the fans who always cheered me on, and to my family, friends and the legal team who have supported me – thank you for everything.' Those sentiments echoed his earlier reaction in May 2024, when he described himself as 'extremely surprised and upset' by the initial charges brought by the FA. West Ham Show Loyalty During Unsettled Period West Ham have emerged from the saga with their loyalty to the player intact. The club publicly welcomed Thursday's verdict and reaffirmed their backing for the 27-year-old, describing the last 18 months as 'a long and difficult process'. It is a rare instance in which a player's reputation survives a match-fixing probe without lasting damage. In Paqueta's case, the support of the club, and notably its fanbase, has played a significant role in preserving the trust he holds within the game. Regulatory Commission Still to Decide on Secondary Breaches While cleared of influencing match outcomes, Paqueta was found to have breached FA Rule F3 for failing to comply with parts of the investigation. The FA confirmed: 'Lucas Paqueta was charged with two breaches of FA Rule F3 in relation to alleged failures to comply with his obligations to answer questions and provide information… [These] were found to be proven following the hearing.' The Regulatory Commission is now considering an appropriate sanction for these infractions. Whether a fine or further action is imposed remains to be seen, but what's clear is that Paqueta's name is no longer weighed down by the gravest of allegations. And for West Ham, the resolution offers some long-awaited clarity ahead of a crucial new season — one in which Paqueta can now return to centre stage, unburdened.

Nottingham Forest sign Switzerland winger Dan Ndoye from Bologna

Nottingham Forest have signed Switzerland winger Dan Ndoye from Bologna. The 24-year-old, who scored nine goals in a total of 41 appearances for Bologna last season, including their winner in the Coppa Italia final, has agreed a five-year deal. Ndoye arrives for a fee reported to be around £34million. Ndoye said: 'I am really happy to have signed for the club. It is a really exciting time at Forest and I knew straight away that I wanted to be a part of the project. 'It's a really ambitious team with a fantastic history and I can't wait to get started.' Ndoye featured in all eight of Bologna's Champions League matches last season and has made 22 senior appearances for his country. He began his professional career in France with Nice and after spending two seasons on loan at Basel, he joined Bologna in the summer of 2023. Forest's chief football officer Ross Wilson said: 'Dan is an exciting new addition to our squad and a player we have tracked extensively over a long period of time. 'We are delighted that he joins Nottingham Forest and continues his own ambitious journey here with us.' Ndoye is Forest's third summer signing following the arrivals of striker Igor Jesus and defender Jair Cunha, both from Brazilian side Botafogo, earlier this month, while England winger Morgan Gibbs-White signed a new three-year deal with the club last week having been linked with a move to Tottenham.

🎥 Lucas Paquetá is back to his best with outrageous training ground skill

If reports are to be believed, then Lucas Paquetá is expected to be cleared of the spot-fixing charges that have hung over his career for the past two years. The Brazilian attacker has been plagued by those allegations since 2023 but looks back to his mercurial best if this latest training clip is to be believed. West Ham are currently in the USA ahead of their friendly with Everton on Thursday. And in the Chicago sun, Paquetá has proved it's his sort of town with some sumptuous skill in a small-sided game. Now the question is: just how much longer will Hammers fans get to enjoy the South American star with rumours of a summer move intensifying? 📸 Richard Pelham - 2025 Getty Images
