Adell's double in 8th drives in the game's first run as Angels beat Braves 4-0 and return to .500

Associated Press18 hours ago
ATLANTA (AP) — Jo Adell's run-scoring double in the eighth inning ended a scoreless tie and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Atlanta Braves 4-0 on Tuesday night.
The Angels (42-42) reached .500 for the ninth time this season, while the Braves (38-46) have lost five of six.
Adell's double down the left-field line off Dylan Lee (1-3) drove in Mike Trout, who doubled. Jorge Soler, who came off the injured list after missing 11 games with lower back inflammation, added a two-run double off Enyel De Los Santos in the four-run inning.
Angels shortstop Zach Neto returned as the leadoff hitter after missing four starts with a jammed right shoulder.
'Having the two guys back makes a huge difference,' interim manager Ray Montgomery said before the game.
The refurbished lineup struggled against Atlanta right-hander Grant Holmes, who allowed only three hits and recorded 10 strikeouts in six innings. Angels left-hander Tyler Anderson also threw six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts.
Rookie right-hander José Fermin (1-0) earned his first win with a scoreless seventh.
Key moment
Michael Harris II ended an 0-for-22 drought with a triple to open the fifth. The Braves couldn't drive in Harris thanks in part to Ronald Acuña Jr.'s third of four strikeouts in the game.
Key stat
A first-inning single extended Matt Olson's career-best, on-base streak to 31 games. The longest active streak in the majors of games safely reaching base began May 29.
Up next
Braves rookie right-hander Didier Fuentes, 0-2 with a 10.80 ERA after two starts, was moved back one day to start on Wednesday. Outfielder Jurickson Profar is expected to make his return from an 80-game suspension for performance-enhancing drug use. Left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (3-6, 2.79) is listed as the Angels' starter.

Spencer Schwellenbach injury update: Braves starter has broken pitching elbow

The Atlanta Braves' nightmare season has no end in sight, and the latest blow might be too much to overcome. Spencer Schwellenbach, who grew into an ace role with Atlanta after injuries to Spencer Strider and Chris Sale, will be out until at least September with a fracture in his right elbow. Schwellenbach, 25, was a good bet to earn inclusion on his first All-Star team after a first half that saw him post a 3.09 ERA in 17 starts and rank third in the National League in WHIP (0.97). But Schwellenbach felt soreness after his most recent start against the Philadelphia Phillies, and imaging revealed a small fracture in his elbow. The timing is almost too much to be believed: Atlanta's season went sideways before April when outfielder Jurickson Profar earned an 80-game suspension for a PED violation just days into his three-year, $42 million contract. Profar's suspension expired this week and he is set to be activated for the July 2 game against the Los Angeles Angels. Meanwhile, Sale, the defending NL Cy Young Award winner, is out indefinitely with a fractured rib cage suffered two weeks ago. Strider completed a 12-month rehab from Tommy John elbow surgery, made one start and then missed five more weeks with a hamstring injury. Add it up, and the Braves are 38-46 entering play July 2, in fourth place in the NL East and seven games behind first-place Philadelphia. At stake: Atlanta's seven-year streak of playoff appearances, which includes six division titles and a 2021 World Series crown. While their deficits aren't insurmountable, their rotation thins out very quickly after Strider, with Grant Holmes bumped to the No. 2 spot and rookie Didier Fuentes - who has a 10.80 ERA in two starts - suddenly a significant piece of it. Additionally, veteran Bryce Elder is supposed to be depth, but instead has been forced to make 13 starts, posting a 5.82 ERA. Schwellenbach was a second-round pick in 2021 by Atlanta.

Watch 29-year-old Rays rookie Jake Mangum of Mississippi State hit inside-the-park home run

Jake Mangum's second career home run in the MLB didn't even need to leave the ballpark. The former Mississippi State baseball star hit an inside-the-park home run on July 2 for the Tampa Bay Rays. He hit the ball to deep center field, and it caromed off the glove of Athletics center fielder Denzel Clarke. Clarke fell to the ground and Mangum sped around the bases. There was no throw to home plate. Mangum, 29, made his MLB debut on March 30 for the Rays and has had a spectacular season that's kept him in the lineup. He is batting .314 with 18 runs, 26 RBIs and 11 stolen bases in 50 games. Advertisement The Pearl native played for the Bulldogs from 2016-19. He batted .357 in his MSU career and is the SEC all-time hits leader. MSU made four NCAA tournament super regionals and two College World Series while he was on the team. He played in the minor leagues since 2019 for the New York Mets, Miami Marlins and Rays organizations before getting the call-up. His first career home run was hit on May 31 at Houston, with his parents watching from the crowd. The Rays are 47-39, holding the second wild card spot in the American League.
