Gaza civil defence says 32 killed in Israeli operations
Israel has recently expanded its military operations in the Gaza Strip, where the war has created dire humanitarian conditions for the Palestinian territory's population of more than two million.
Media restrictions in Gaza and difficulties in accessing many areas mean AFP is unable to independently verify the tolls and details provided by the civil defence agency.
Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal said Saturday's dead included eight people killed in two strikes on schools in Gaza City.
Many Gazans have sought shelter in schools and other public buildings since the war began with Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel.
Bassal also reported that eight people were killed by Israeli fire near an aid distribution centre in southern Gaza.
Contacted by AFP, the Israeli military said it could not comment on specific attacks without precise coordinates.
The latest strikes came hours after Hamas said it was ready to start talks 'immediately' on a US-sponsored proposal for a Gaza ceasefire.
An Israeli official told AFP that 'no decision has been made yet' when asked about Hamas's positive response to the latest ceasefire proposal.
It came ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's departure for talks on Monday in Washington, where US President Donald Trump has intensified calls for an end to the war.
Hamas's October 2023 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures.
Out of 251 hostages seized during the attack, 49 are still held in Gaza, including 27 the Israeli military says are dead.
Israel's retaliatory campaign has killed more than 57,000 people in Gaza, also mostly civilians, according to the Hamas-run territory's health ministry. The United Nations considers its figures reliable.

Switzerland reopens embassy in Tehran
GENEVA: Switzerland said on Sunday it was reopening its embassy in Tehran, which was closed last month amid an air war with Israel, and will resume representing US interests in the country. As of Sunday, the embassy is 'again open having temporarily been closed on June 20 owing to the instability of the situation in the country,' the Swiss foreign ministry said in a statement. Saying it wanted to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, Israel last month carried out strikes against Iranian nuclear sites, killing several senior military officers as well as scientists involved in their nuclear programme. US President Donald Trump ordered airstrikes targeting three nuclear facilities in central Iran on the night of June 21-22. Gunmen kill Mexico city counciller during basketball game
MEXICO CITY: Gunmen burst into a sports hall in central Mexico and shot dead a local government official attending an amateur basketball game on Saturday, local authorities said. Families and children had gathered at the sports center in the violent state of Guanajuato, where Ignacio Alejandro Roaro, a city council secretary in Apaseo el Grande, was killed. The city council 'strongly condemns the treacherous, despicable, and cowardly attack that occurred this Saturday, in which our colleague and friend, city council secretary Ignacio Alejandro Roaro, lost his life,' it said in a statement. Local media said an armed man had been arrested. Guanajuato is a thriving industrial hub and home to several popular tourist destinations, but it is also Mexico's deadliest state due to gang turf wars, according to official homicide statistics. In June, 11 people were shot dead and about 20 others injured in a shooting targeting a neighborhood party in Irapuato, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) west of Apaseo el Grande. A month earlier, 17 bodies were found by investigators in an abandoned house in Irapuato. Much of the violence in Guanajuato is linked to conflict between the Santa Rosa de Lima gang and the Jalisco New Generation cartel, one of the most powerful in the Latin American nation. Mediators tell Hamas new Gaza talks to begin in Doha
GAZA CITY: International mediators trying to broker a ceasefire to end the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza have informed the Palestinian group that talks will resume on Sunday, a Palestinian official said. 'Mediators informed Hamas that a new round of indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel will begin in Doha today, Sunday,' the official, who is familiar with the talks and close to Hamas, told AFP. The official said the Hamas delegation, led by its top negotiator Kahlil al-Hayya, was already in the Qatari capital. The renewed talks are expected to focus on the conditions for a potential ceasefire agreement, with particular attention to the details of a possible hostage release in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. Hamas is also seeking increased humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip and assurances for a lasting end to the conflict. Two Palestinian sources close to the discussions said the latest US-backed proposal included a 60-day truce, during which Hamas would release 10 living hostages and several bodies in exchange for Palestinians detained by Israel. On Friday, Hamas said it was ready 'to engage immediately and seriously' in negotiations, and that it had submitted its response to the proposal, without offering any details. On Saturday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement that 'the changes that Hamas is seeking to make in the Qatari proposal... are unacceptable to Israel'.
