South Korea faces a reckoning: Political dysfunction, moral drift and the path to unification

June 4 (UPI) -- South Korea's transformation from colonial subjugation and a war-ravaged state into one of the world's leading economies and cultural exporters is a story of extraordinary resilience and ambition. Yet, beneath this remarkable trajectory lies an increasingly fragile foundation -- one marred by political dysfunction, institutional distrust, demographic collapse, and a waning sense of national purpose.
The political turmoil of recent months, including former President Yoon Suk-yeol's controversial martial law declaration and the ongoing legal entanglements of President-elect Lee Jae-myung, should not be dismissed as partisan spectacles. They reveal deeper structural flaws that threaten South Korea's social fabric and future stability. Amid growing public disillusionment, the new administration must take bold, systemic steps to restore confidence in governance, reaffirm national identity and reignite the vision of peaceful Korean unification.
I. Political Paralysis and Institutional Decay
The December 2024 martial law declaration was a jarring reminder of the fragility of democratic norms. President Yoon's overreach resulted in his impeachment and further polarized an already fractured political landscape. Yet, his opponents in the Democratic Party have themselves fueled a cycle of retribution through repeated attempts to impeach officials and politicize legal proceedings.
South Korea's political climate has become one in which elections are viewed not as opportunities for civic renewal, but as battles for institutional control. The line between opposition and prosecution is increasingly blurred. Voters perceive justice as selectively applied, and both major parties bear responsibility for undermining public trust.
President-elect Lee inherits a nation divided, with his own credibility under scrutiny. The Supreme Court has upheld a ruling against him for violating election laws, while additional charges -- including bribery and breach of trust -- remain unresolved. His first task must be to restore confidence by ensuring legal transparency and avoiding the perception of using office as a shield from prosecution.
II. The Judiciary in Disarray
Beyond political reform, South Korea faces a crisis of judicial legitimacy. Once regarded as a stabilizing force, the courts are now viewed by many as politicized and inconsistent. High-profile rulings frequently seem contradictory, and prosecutorial discretion is often perceived as unaccountable and overly aggressive.
The judiciary's credibility cannot be restored through rhetoric alone. Structural changes are essential. These include insulating judges from political pressure, establishing clear and consistent standards for legal decisions, and introducing mechanisms to protect citizens from prosecutorial overreach. Restoring rule of law is not merely a matter of governance -- it is a prerequisite for national unity and long-term stability.
III. A Nation Facing Demographic Crisis
South Korea also faces an unprecedented demographic collapse. In 2024, the country recorded the lowest fertility rate in the world -- just 0.72 births per woman. This statistic is more than a demographic concern; it is a civilizational alarm. A society that cannot sustain its population will struggle to maintain its economy, social systems and global standing.
While economic burdens -- rising housing costs, long working hours, and education expenses -- are certainly contributors, the crisis runs deeper. There is a growing cultural and psychological alienation from marriage, parenthood and traditional family structures. Young adults increasingly view child-rearing as a burden rather than a joy, and many elders live in isolation. South Korea now faces the intergenerational consequences of decades of material progress without sufficient moral and social investment.
Government incentives have done little to reverse this trend. What is needed is a broader cultural shift -- one that restores value to family life and reaffirms intergenerational responsibility. This includes rethinking education, media narratives and social policy to reinforce rather than undermine traditional bonds. Prosperity, both economic and societal, begins with the strength of families.
IV. Economic Imbalance and Structural Vulnerabilities
Economically, South Korea's headline figures remain impressive, but the structural underpinnings are weakening. The continued dominance of large conglomerates (chaebols) has stifled innovation and exacerbated inequality. Labor disputes, youth unemployment and real estate speculation all point to systemic inefficiencies.
Privatizing the financial system, empowering small and medium enterprises and improving access to affordable housing are necessary to create a more equitable and sustainable economic environment. Equally important is reducing reliance on a narrow group of trade partners. South Korea must diversify beyond China and prepare for the implications of U.S. trade policy, particularly under a second Trump administration.
President-elect Lee has spoken of a vision for South Korea as a "global pivotal state." To make that more than a slogan, he must pursue pragmatic trade policies and regulatory reforms that support broader economic participation. A resilient economy is one where citizens believe that effort and enterprise are rewarded fairly -- and that national progress is not confined to elites.
V. Reclaiming the Mission of Unification
Perhaps most neglected in recent discourse is the question of national unification. For decades, unification with North Korea has been treated as a distant aspiration. But it remains central to Korea's historical identity and geopolitical future. The continued division of the peninsula is not just a strategic anomaly; it is a civilizational wound.
Efforts toward unification cannot proceed in a vacuum. South Korea's internal cohesion 00 its institutional integrity, civic morale, and cultural unity -- will shape the feasibility of any future reconciliation. A divided South cannot realistically unify a divided Korea.
This is why unification must be approached not as a partisan platform, but as a national mission rooted in civic education, economic strategy and long-term diplomacy. Public awareness campaigns should highlight the potential cultural and economic benefits of unification, while civil society should be mobilized to support grassroots dialogue and cross-border cooperation. Internationally, this requires strengthening ties with key allies like the United States and rebuilding trust with Japan to coordinate regional security.
Ultimately, unification efforts must be based on Korean Dream rooted in Korea's founding ideal of Hongik Ingan -- "to benefit all humanity." That vision requires not only civil and political will, but national character.
To Korea's Next Leader: A Call to Courage
To South Korea's new president: Your administration begins at a defining moment. The country does not need ideological fervor or managerial efficiency alone. It needs leadership grounded in truth, justice and vision. Judicial reform must come not as a tool for settling scores, but as an instrument of renewal. Family policy must move beyond subsidies to embrace cultural restoration. Economic policy must prioritize inclusivity and sustainability.
Lead not by fear or faction, but by courage and conscience. Conduct your own legal affairs with transparency and openness. Speak plainly about the challenges the country faces. Mobilize citizens not just to believe in Korea's potential, but to take part in its restoration.
Conclusion: Korea's Defining Choice
South Korea stands at a crossroads. One path leads toward further polarization and decline. The other points toward renewal, reconciliation and long-term peace. That choice does not belong to one party or administration-it belongs to the Korean people. Educators, judges, business leaders, parents and youth all have a role to play in rebuilding what has been eroded.
History will judge this generation not by the wealth it accumulated or the institutions it preserved, but by the vision it restored. The time for superficial fixes is over. The work of national rebuilding must begin.

Traumatized by a decisive loss to Donald Trump in last November's presidential election and unable to capitalize on Trump's mishandling of the economy and erratic foreign policy, the Democratic Party, the world's oldest active political party, is in a shambles. Its troubles are largely self-inflicted, according to two new books on Joe Biden's doomed re-election bid: Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson's Original Sin: President Biden's Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again and Chris Whipple's Uncharted: How Trump Beat Biden, Harris, and the Odds in the Wildest Campaign in History. Biden's physical and mental deterioration had long been evident but was masked by luck and a loyal inner circle. COVID restrictions during the 2020 campaign allowed his advisors to minimize his public appearances and gloss over his missteps. His decline clearly accelerated while in office but it was covered up by ploys such as a reduced schedule, fewer interviews and the use of teleprompters even for routine public speaking. Biden's doctor was complicit, never administering even simple tests of cognitive ability and not collecting basic health data for a man his age: Biden's prostate cancer could and should have been diagnosed years before it metastasized. People outside Biden's inner circle were routinely appalled by what they saw. David Axelrod, chief strategist in both of Barack Obama's presidential campaigns and senior advisor to Obama in his first term, went on record opposing Biden's running again because of his growing infirmity. Special Counsel Robert Hur recommended not charging Biden for mishandling confidential documents because he believed a jury would not convict 'a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.' Instead of seizing on Hur's report to question why Biden so scrupulously avoided interviews and press conferences the mainstream press mainly attacked the messenger. Shielding Biden from outside scrutiny likely backfired, however, by helping reinforce his decline. As one former high-ranking Biden aide told Whipple, seeing fewer people 'allowed his faculties to atrophy. But I think, like knives, they have to be sharpened. They get sharpened by rubbing them up against steel. And they don't get sharpened by sitting in the drawer.' George Orwell wrote that 'we are all capable of believing things which we know to be untrue, and then, when we are finally proved wrong, impudently twisting the facts so as to show that we were right. Intellectually, it is possible to carry on this process for an indefinite time: the only check on it is that sooner or later a false belief bumps up against solid reality, usually on a battlefield.' The battlefield that fully revealed Biden's unfitness for the presidency was last June's debate with Trump. Whipple underlines how the terms of the debate favoured Biden. The host network was CNN, which is Democrat-friendly CNN (with Jake Tapper as one of the moderators). There was no audience and therefore no audience feedback for Trump to play to or to help fine-tune his messaging. And microphones were muted to prevent a repeat of Trump's incessant interruptions in the 2020 debates. Despite all this, just 12 minutes in, after Biden made his infamous and incoherent claim that 'we finally beat Medicare,' Tapper's co-anchor, Dana Bash, passed him a note reading: 'he just lost the election.' Still denying the obvious, however, Biden, his family and his close advisors circled the wagons, dismissing his performance as just a bad debate, an explanation first offered by then vice-president Kamala Harris in an immediate post-debate interview. But Biden's obvious inability to campaign or govern effectively, now unmistakably revealed, soon led moderate Democrats to search for another candidate. It is revealing that two main groups still resisted Biden's stepping down. One band of loyalists consisted of his aides, who needed Biden to remain as a figurehead so they could continue to exercise power. The other, ironically, was the Democratic Party's progressive wing, led by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, which strongly supported Biden's implementation of its collectivist agenda — despite Biden having defeated his more left-wing rivals for the 2020 Democratic nomination by stressing his own moderation. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and former House speaker Nancy Pelosi were finally able to pierce the protective wall around Biden and convince him to withdraw by presenting polls showing he had less than a five per cent chance of winning. It is unclear if Biden's 28-day delay in withdrawing cost the Democrats the election. Even if he had dropped out in June, cramming a full slate of primaries into the few weeks that would have remained before the Democratic convention was not feasible. Virtually by default, therefore, Harris became the nominee and, for a few weeks, sparked hopes of salvaging the election. But she severely hurt her chance of being elected by refusing to distance herself from Biden's unpopular policies — a failure not lost on our own Mark Carney, who, taking over from a leader who had also lost all credibility with the public, quickly disavowed Justin Trudeau's legacy. Harris, however, when asked 'would you have done something differently than President Biden during the past four years?' replied 'there is not a thing that comes to mind in terms of — and I've been a part of most of the decisions that have had impact.' She thereby handed over the mantle of change to Donald Trump. It will take years for many Americans to again trust that Democrats have the nation's and not their own interest at heart — the very sin they accuse Trump of committing. South Korea's President Lee says U.S. tariff negotiations 'not very easy'

SEOUL, July 3 (UPI) -- South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said Thursday that his government is working hard to strike a trade deal with the United States on impending tariffs but expressed doubt as to whether talks will be concluded before next week's deadline. "It is clear that tariff negotiations are not very easy," Lee said at a press conference marking his first 30 days in office. "We need to create a mutually beneficial result that is helpful to both parties, but it has not yet been clearly defined what the two parties want," he said. South Korea is facing 25% tariffs threatened by U.S. President Donald Trump as part of his sweeping package of "Liberation Day" trade measures. Trump announced the tariffs in April but quickly put their implementation on hold for 90 days -- a deadline that is approaching on July 8. Tariffs on steel and automobiles, two key industries in South Korea, are already in place. South Korea is seeking an extension on the 90-day pause and sent a delegation to Washington last week to ask for an exemption from all U.S. reciprocal and product-specific tariffs. Lee said Thursday that it was "difficult to confirm whether we can conclude tariff negotiations by July 8." "But I can tell you that we are continuing to work hard," he said. "We are also exploring many topics for our discussion from various perspectives. I can only say that we will do our best." Lee took office last month in a snap election precipitated by former President Yoon Suk Yeol's botched martial law attempt in December. In his first press conference as president, Lee focused his remarks on restoring economic growth and stabilizing people's livelihoods. "The top priority is to relieve the suffering of the people and create a country that grows and leaps forward again," he said. Domestic political turmoil and an uncertain trade environment have shaken the export-dependent Asian powerhouse, which saw its economy unexpectedly shrink in the first quarter of the year. In late May, the Bank of Korea lowered its GDP growth forecast for 2025 from 1.5% in February to 0.8%, citing a slow recovery in domestic demand and the expected impact of U.S. tariffs. At the same time, the central bank cut its benchmark interest rate for the fourth time since October, lowering it by a quarter percentage point to 2.5%. Since taking office, President Lee has pledged to boost the economy through fiscal stimulus and other policy measures. Last month, the government announced a second supplementary budget worth more than $14.7 billion, which will include cash handouts, debt relief measures and investments in sectors such as construction and artificial intelligence. The move follows a $10.1 billion package that was previously approved by parliament. Lee also vowed on Thursday to work toward improving relations with North Korea on a tense Korean Peninsula. "We will thoroughly prepare for provocations, while resuming severed communications between the South and the North and opening the way for peace and coexistence on the Korean Peninsula through dialogue and cooperation," he said. The president pointed to his recent order for the suspension of propaganda loudspeaker broadcasts across the DMZ to North Korea as a positive step. Pyongyang responded by stopping its own loudspeaker blasts of bizarre noises such as metallic screeching and animal sounds. "As North Korea has recently responded to the government's preemptive suspension of broadcasts to the North, I believe that a virtuous cycle of peace is possible," Lee said.
