Seven die in incidents of lightning strikes, drowning in Jharkhand's Bokaro
Bokaro district
on Tuesday, police said. Five people drowned in two areas of the district, while two others were killed after being struck by lightning, they said.
Four members of a family, including a woman and her two daughters, drowned while bathing in a pond at Gamharia village in Chandankiyari area, said Kaushalendra Kumar, in-charge of the local police station.
The second incident happened at Barmasia village, where a boy drowned in a village pond, another police official said.

HC dismisses ‘fake degree' plea against UP deputy CM Maurya
Prayagraj: The Allahabad high court on Monday dismissed a petition seeking registration of a criminal case against Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister and senior BJP leader Keshav Prasad Maurya over allegations of submitting fake educational degrees while contesting elections and obtaining a petrol pump dealership. Rejecting the revision petition filed by one Diwakar Nath Tripathi, a BJP leader and social activist from Prayagraj, Justice Sanjay Kumar Singh said, "The complainant-revisionist is not a person deceived by Keshav Prasad Maurya (second respondent in the petition). He had no locus to move an application under section 156 (3) of CrPC seeking direction to register FIR regarding the alleged offence of cheating and forgery, which are not covered under section 39 (public to give information of certain offences) of CrPC. " "The wheels of criminal justice system cannot be permitted to be clogged by frivolous complaints where a complainant himself is not aggrieved or victim in any manner," the court added. Passing the order, the bench said: "The proceedings appear to be prima facie initiated maliciously by the revisionist with oblique motives and an intention to gain some advantage or settle his score." Tripathi later challenged the ACJM's order before the high court. However, in Feb 2024, the court dismissed his revision on the ground of delay, noting that the petition was filed more than 300 days after the trial court's order. However, in Jan this year, the Supreme Court condoned the delay and directed the high court to consider the matter on the merits. Pursuant to the SC's directions, Tripathi again approached the Allahabad HC with a fresh revision petition taking the same allegations and grounds. The matter was admitted in Apr 2025, and judgment was reserved on May 23, 2025.

New Delhi: On an average, five people were arrested daily in the city this year for allegedly sexually assaulting or abusing minors, with four cases registered each day under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (Pocso). Investigation revealed that in most instances, the accused were known to the survivors, often being family members or neighbours. Police also noted that some families hesitated to cooperate for fear of social stigma or due to familiarity with the accused. According to Delhi Police data, till May this year, 543 cases were registered, resulting in 697 arrests. Of these, 508 cases were solved. The incidents involved various forms of abuse, including rape, molestation and eve-teasing. In some cases, they took the minors to other locations under false pretences, where the assaults occurred. Children over 10 years old can provide statements directly, but for those aged four or five, police must rely on their mothers to communicate details. "Sometimes there is a language barrier, so we use interpreters," the officer said. A major challenge arises when families withdraw complaints after reporting a crime, often due to social stigma, concerns about perceived "honour", or because the accused is a relative. "Family members often pressure the survivor to retract the complaint in such cases," another officer said, adding that this usually complicates efforts to secure conviction. The officer suggested that some accused suffer from psychological illnesses, which may contribute to their involvement in such crimes. Police also noted that minors are also vulnerable on social media. "There are cases where unknown individuals befriend children online and obtain private pictures or videos through deceit or manipulation. These children are then subjected to sexual harassment through blackmail," the officer said. To combat harassment and eve-teasing in public spaces, Delhi Police have launched targeted initiatives such as 'Shishtachar Squad'. According to Dr Rajiv Mehta, senior consultant psychiatrist at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, children are targeted due to several reasons. "Firstly, they are not physically strong. Secondly, fear can be easily instilled in them. Thirdly, they can be lured easily and often do not understand what is happening. In some cases, the accused even tell them that they are just playing games," he said. "Parents should teach children about good and bad touch, and after an incident, they must take action against the perpetrators — even if the person is known to them or from within the family. They should not prioritise saving the family's 'pride', because such incidents can have a long-term impact on the child," he added.
