However, super sub Chloe Kelly provided an assist for both Lucy Bronze and Michelle Agyemang within a couple of minutes of each other, which would eventually send the nail-biting tie to penalties.
This is where the reigning champions would go on to progress from what turned out to be a chaotic shootout, with only five out of 14 penalties being converted.
Now England will be hoping to beat an Italian side who have successfully negotiated their way to a first Women's Euro semi-final since 1997.
But should they get past this point, the Lionesses' opponents in the final will certainly be tough.

Prince William and Princess Charlotte have been spotted cheering on England's women football team at the Euros final. The Prince of Wales and his 10-year-old daughter travelled to Basel, Switzerland, to support the team during their final clash with Spain. The match, broadcast live on both BBC One and ITV1, comes after England beat Italy 2-1 in the semi-final in Geneva on Tuesday evening.
