Kitchener-Waterloo festival celebrates Palestinian culture
The event was hosted by Sporas, a Waterloo Region-based organization that celebrates culture and people of Palestine. The Palestinian Youth Movement, a youth organization supporting The State of Palestine, was also involved in running the event.
The festival saw over 4,000 attendees last year. Shatha Mahmoud, the organizer of the Palestinian Youth Movement said they're expecting a turnout of 7,000 this year. The goal is to share the history and culture of Palestine.
'Our purpose today is to communicate what's been happening on the ground in Gaza, but to also educate on the rest of Palestine and connect with the past and community, mourn with them, commemorate and recommit ourselves to the struggle for liberation,' she said.
The festival had multiple vendors with different food, clothes, exhibits and crafts for everyone to see.
Attendees were also able to enjoy live music, including a drum circle and other interactive activities.
The street in front of the square was lined with Palestinian flags, history and displays discussing the ongoing conflict with Israel.
Volunteers like Khadija Humera and Abdul Kareem Khazi said getting involved with the festival was meaningful to them.
'Especially during this time, it's important to gather as a community and show solidarity,' said 'I think that the best way to show solidarity is to show how many people are in on this and I wanted to be a part of that.'
Khazi, a grade 9 student, said it was the perfect opportunity to show support and get volunteer hours for school.
'It's a good first experience and the community here is also very good. I would just rather be here,' he said.

Faaez Al-hendi, a vendor and sponsor at the festival, said the event is one everyone should attend, learn from and enjoy.
'The Palestinian cause is a deep and personal one but just for regular Canadians that might be out here today, it's a little bit about understanding that we're all equal at the end of the day. We're all the same. Every life matters, whether it's here or in Palestine.'

Over 100 people displaced by Surrey, B.C., condo fire
More than 100 people are displaced following a major condo fire in Surrey's Guildford neighborhood Sunday evening. Crews were called to the scene, a four-storey building located on 153rd Street and 101 Avenue, around 7:30 p.m., according to Jerry Siggs, assistant fire chief with the Surrey Fire Service. Siggs said crews arrived to find heavy flames coming from the second floor, extending upward toward the third and fourth floors, and spreading to the roof. All residents had evacuated by the time fire crews arrived, and no injuries were reported. Siggs described damage to the building as significant. "There's heavy fire damage from floors two to four and through the roof structure itself," he said. Residents from 68 units have been displaced, Siggs said, and he estimated that more than 100 people in total are impacted. He said 51 personnel responded to the fire and the last crews left the scene around 1 a.m. Monday. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Sixty per cent of Ontarians believe their city or town has become noisier, a new survey reveals. (Pexels/Photo by Kampus Production) A new online survey has found that nearly 60 per cent of Ontarians believe their city or town has become noisier. The online survey was conducted by British Columbia firm Research Co. from May 19-21 and was based on the responses of 1,000 Canadian adults. The survey found that 63 per cent of respondents believe their town or city has become noisier over the last year, up from 54 per cent during a similar survey conducted in 2023. 'A third of Canadians say their home is noisier now than last year, while more than two-in-five feel the same way about their street,' a press release accompanying the survey reads. According to the press release, the most common complaints from residents are about noise from vehicles like motorcycles and cars 'revving up' while residents are inside their home. Dogs barking and construction-related noises like roofing, land clearing and the noise from heavy machinery came a close second. Additionally, more than one-in-five respondents said that they loud people outside homes, car alarms, loud music in vehicles and homes, and excessive honking, the report says. The survey also found that 16 per cent of Canadians have reported using earplugs to deal with the noise while inside their homes, while 11 per cent said they use noise cancelling headphones. 'The proportion of Canadians who have not taken any action to deal with noise inside their home has fallen from 74 per cent in 2022 to 67 per cent in 2023,' Mario Canseco, President of Research Co. says in an analysis accompanying the survey. 'Canadians aged 18 to 34 are more likely to be wearing earplugs or acquiring special hardware to mitigate noise.' The survey was weighted according to Canadian census figures for age, gender and region and is considered accurate to within 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20. Replica of famous ship now available for viewing in Saint John
