Mets Top Brewers 3-2 Behind Nimmo, Soto and Peterson

Al Arabiyaa day ago
Brandon Nimmo homered again, Juan Soto came through with a tiebreaking single, and the New York Mets held off the Milwaukee Brewers 3–2 on Thursday night.
David Peterson (6–4) rebounded from a pair of rough starts, tossing 6 2/3 effective innings to give New York's injury-ravaged rotation a much-needed boost. Pete Alonso added an RBI double as the Mets took two of three from Milwaukee – just as they did in their Wild Card Series during the National League playoffs last October. Next stop: the second Subway Series of the season against the crosstown-rival New York Yankees. Fans in the sellout crowd of 42,241 received replica Soto jerseys on Fireworks Night, and the $765 million slugger gave New York a 2–1 lead in the sixth when he grounded an RBI single off hard-luck loser Jose Quintana (6–3), who spent the past two seasons with the Mets. Alonso then drove the first pitch from reliever Nick Mears off the left-center fence for a double that made it 3–1.
Andruw Monasterio hit his first homer this year off Peterson in the seventh, but the Mets hung on for their second consecutive victory after losing 14 of 17. Ryne Stanek got four straight outs, ending the eighth with a primal scream after striking out all three batters in the inning. Edwin Díaz fanned two in a scoreless ninth for his 18th save in 19 opportunities.
Nimmo, who hit a grand slam Wednesday night off Brewers rookie sensation Jacob Misiorowski, connected for a solo shot in the second to put New York in front. Caleb Durbin tied it with a run-scoring infield single in the fourth. The first pitch was delayed 37 minutes by rain.
Key moment: Díaz gave up a one-out single in the ninth to pinch-hitter Christian Yelich, who then got caught stealing. Yelich was initially ruled safe at second base before the call was overturned following a replay review.
Key stat: Soto, the NL player of the month for June, began the night batting only .145 with runners in scoring position.
Up next: Milwaukee RHP Quinn Priester (6–2, 3.35 ERA) starts Friday night in Miami against RHP Sandy Alcantara (4–8, 6.98), the 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner. The Mets were undecided on a starter for their Subway Series opener against the Yankees at Citi Field.

Bader Walks Off Rays With 2nd Home Run Of Game For Twins

Harrison Bader hit his second home run of the game in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Minnesota Twins a 4–3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday. Bader, the No. 9 batter, lined the first pitch he saw from Kevin Kelly (0–1) into the first row of left-field seats to complete a three-run Minnesota comeback. It was the third career walk-off RBI for Bader–first on a home run. Louis Varland (3–3) pitched two scoreless innings for the win. Trailing 3–1 in the seventh, Minnesota got a two-out RBI double from Byron Buxton before Rays reliever Garrett Cleavinger hit Willi Castro and Brooks Lee with pitches, tying the game. Carlos Correa struck out with the bases loaded. Twins starter Chris Paddack allowed two earned runs and five hits in five-plus innings. Josh Lowe singled against Paddack leading off the sixth and scored on Yandy Díaz's double. Junior Caminero drove in Díaz with a single off Danny Coulombe for a 2–1 Rays lead. Lowe added an RBI single in the seventh. Zack Littell pitched six solid innings for Tampa Bay, allowing one earned run for the third straight start. He scattered four hits and struck out five. Tampa Bay shortstop Ha-Seong Kim had a hit in his Rays debut before leaving after he was caught stealing in the sixth inning and came up limping a bit. Kim missed the first 87 games this season recovering from right shoulder surgery. The 2023 Gold Glove recipient with San Diego signed a two-year, $29 million deal with Tampa Bay on Feb. 3. Tampa Bay's Brandon Lowe extended his career-high hitting streak to 19 games with a fourth-inning single. The longest active streak in the majors ties him with Jason Bartlett in 2009 for the second-longest in Rays history. Díaz hit in 20 straight games last season. The series continues Saturday when Tampa Bay plans to start RHP Taj Bradley (5–6, 4.84 ERA). The Twins had yet to announce a scheduled starter.

Cubs Break Franchise Record With 8 Home Runs, 3 by Michael Busch

Michael Busch and the Chicago Cubs turned their holiday into a home run. Eight of them, to be exact. Busch hit three long balls, Pete Crow-Armstrong connected twice, and the Cubs went deep a franchise-record eight times to hammer the St. Louis Cardinals 11–3 on Friday for their fourth straight victory. 'It was just a fun game to be a part of,' Busch said. 'Baseball is kind of a July Fourth kind of deal, and especially to do it in Wrigley Field and have just so much excitement in the game–that was one I'll never forget.' The fireworks started long before sunset in front of 40,038 fans at Wrigley. Busch went 4 for 4 with five RBIs in his first career three-homer performance and second multihomer game. His second drive of the day hit the right-field video board just after Crow-Armstrong reached it. 'I think that's the little side effect of baseball,' Busch said. 'You get in there just trying to have good at-bats and try to win the game, but when things like that happen it's cool. You grow up dreaming of playing in the big leagues, and to be able to do it and then, you know, to stitch your name in the Chicago Cubs record books is pretty cool.' The eight long balls allowed by St. Louis also broke a club mark. The 27-year-old Busch has rounded into a reliable everyday first baseman for the Cubs following a January 2024 trade from the Dodgers that largely went under the radar. He came to Chicago with right-hander Yency Almonte in a deal that sent prospects Jackson Ferris and Zyhir Hope to Los Angeles. Busch played 152 games last season for the Cubs, batting .248 with 21 homers and 65 RBIs. This year he's upped his average to .288 with 17 homers and 55 RBIs in 82 games. 'He's turned into a really great offensive player,' manager Craig Counsell said. 'Last year it felt like there were kinds of ups and downs during the season. And this year, you know, he has lengthened the ups and shortened the downs.' Crow-Armstrong also went 4 for 4, and Dansby Swanson launched a two-run homer for Chicago. Seiya Suzuki and Carson Kelly added solo shots as the NL Central leaders hit six homers in the first three innings off Miles Mikolas (4–6), a record for most home runs off a Cardinals pitcher in one game. 'We just did an extremely good job at being aggressive in the zone, and it was just kind of our day,' Busch said. 'You know, we don't really miss in the zone, and I think when that happens we're a very scary ball team.'
