Moving suspended gold particles to Royal Society is a delicate job

It is not far from the Royal Institution to the Royal Society. Less than a mile. But this week, as Charlotte New travelled between the two — holding some bottles of pinkish liquid containing a little sprinkling of gold — every foot was planned.
The taxi driver knew the preferred route, knew not to brake suddenly, and knew that New, head of heritage at the Royal Institution, would be very upset with jolts.
'We do not want jiggling,' she said before the transportation. 'There is to be no jiggling.'
She would not tell The Times when she was leaving though — for insurance purposes it had to remain secret.
Only once in the 170 years since Michael Faraday accidentally made an odd suspension of gold particles have these, his colloids, left the Royal Institution, the scientific organisation famed for its Christmas lectures.
Then, it was because of the blitz. The country's most precious treasures were moved to the slate mines of Wales. These odd bottles, which glow ruby in the light, spent several years out of the light, alongside old masters, the Magna Carta and first folios of Shakespeare.
This time, they are being moved for an exhibition at the Royal Society, Britain's national scientific academy. There, they will appear alongside other colloids as researchers investigate how a phenomenon discovered by mistake by Faraday, long considered an optical curiosity, might have practical value.
The colloids were created as part of attempts by the Victorian polymath, most famous for his work on electricity, to make ever-thinner sheets of gold. He was investigating, among other things, the optical properties of the gold. To make gold leaf as thin as possible, he washed it in acid.
But then he noticed that this run-off was itself interesting. When he shone a light through it, it scattered with a ruby glow. He realised it was hitting tiny particles of gold, suspended in the liquid. The particles are small enough that over almost two centuries they have in some of the bottles stayed suspended — held aloft by the movement of water molecules. Others have settled. No one is sure what shaking will do.
'When we clean them, we use paint brushes,' New said. 'We dust around them, and not very often.'
The Royal Institution is taking the risk of moving them, along with Faraday's notebook, as part of its 200th anniversary celebrations of its Christmas lectures, as well as Faraday's discovery of benzene.
At the Royal Society's summer exhibition, opening from July 1 to 6, they will not merely be there as part of scientific heritage. They will be exhibited alongside some modern colloids, with potentially important applications.
Dr Aliaksandra Rakovich, of King's College London, said: 'Faraday cared about colour. He was curious about that, and that's what he investigated.'
But, today, his work is seen as a landmark in nanotechnology, and among the first investigations into the properties of very small particles.
Dr Simon Freakley, of the University of Bath, said: 'Gold is perceived as being inert. When you make these very, very small particles of gold, they actually become incredibly reactive.'
In particular, if you shine a laser at them then they get extremely hot. This can be a low-energy way to facilitate difficult reactions.
Freakley and Rakovich are looking at ways to harness the reactive properties of colloids in industrial processes and also for tasks such as removing air pollution.
Faraday's colloids will, hopefully, not be reacting though.
We do know, now, that they made the journey unharmed. By shining a laser, the Royal Institution confirmed the properties were unchanged during the second journey of their lives.
Now New just has to get them back.

The much-maligned "flying ant day", a summer phenomenon in Britain and Ireland, is poised to return as warmer weather persists across the UK. Swarms of winged black garden ants, typically Lasius niger, erupt from their nests under lawns, flower beds, and stone patios to invade personal space, cling to laundry, and splatter against car windshields. Their sheer numbers can be so immense that they have previously registered as drifting clouds on weather radars. Met Office forecaster Simon Partridge told the BBC that distinguishing them from patches of showers can be difficult. The occurrence can be unpleasant and occasionally very irritating – memorably, tennis stars Caroline Wozniacki and Ekaterina Makarova had to interrupt a Wimbledon match in July 2018 to spray themselves with bug repellent as the result of an influx of flying ants to Court 1 – but it is largely harmless to humans and not something to worry about. Nevertheless, to be forewarned is to be forearmed, so here is everything you need to know about this strangest of annual events. Why does it happen? The reason ants emerge from the ground in this sudden fashion is because they have reached the 'nuptial flight' phase of their reproductive cycles, at which point those with wings (known as alates) – virgin queen ants (or princesses) and male drones, but not flightless female workers – depart their nests in search of new colonies, moving as one for protection. As the queens race off, they emit pheromones to attract mates while flying as fast as they can to ensure that only the fastest and most capable males can reach them. This is an example of natural selection in action, as the race makes certain that only the strongest examples of the species get to pass on their genes to a next generation. The spread to fresh colonies further afield also serves to limit inbreeding as it means ants commingle with mates from other nests. A queen – which can grow to 15mm in length and live for as long as 15 years in the wild, according to the Natural History Museum (NHM) – may have several mates during the nuptial flight and preserve their semen within her abdomen for a lifetime, with a view to fertilising future eggs. She will go on to discard her wings by chewing them off and form new nests underground but her male suitors will simply fall to the ground and die without so much as a post-coital cigarette, their final moments on Earth presumably also among their happiest. What weather conditions encourage it? In Britain and Ireland, flying ant days typically occur in July or August, often in warmer urban areas first, when the weather is hot and humid and when winds are low. Temperature is a key factor, with the Royal Society of Biology (RSB) noting that ant swarms rarely emerge if it is cooler than 13C and that 25C is their preferred seasonal average. The RSB, incidentally, argues that we should think of flying ant seasons, rather than isolated days, as ants may well take to the air on multiple occasions over the course of a British summer, depending on the atmospheric conditions, the species of ant in question and the nature of their habitat among other variables. What can be done about it? Not a great deal, unfortunately. Some might advocate flooding the ants' nests with water or detergent or attempting to snare them in sellotape around the home but that all feels distinctly inhumane. Instead, your best bet is to stay out of their way as much as possible and console yourself with the integral role ants play in the maintenance of natural ecosystems. Their colonies help to keep the soil aerated and they themselves are a vital source of food to birds like swifts and gulls, who in turn make important contributions to the natural order. If you do get bitten or stung, do not be alarmed. The NHS states that ant bites are 'generally harmless, although you'll probably feel a nip'.

UK universities have failed to protect gender-critical academics from bullying and career-threatening restrictions on their research, according to a report. The report, by Prof Alice Sullivan of University College London, recommends that students and staff 'taking part in freedom-restricting harassment should face consequences commensurate with the seriousness of the offence'. Sullivan said her report 'raises stark concerns about barriers to academic freedom in UK universities. Researchers investigating vital issues have been subjected to sustained campaigns of intimidation simply for acknowledging the biological and social importance of sex.' The report said the updated Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act, which comes into force in August, will uphold researchers' rights in England, and calls for similar mechanisms in other parts of the UK. The report's evidence pre-dates the UK supreme court's April ruling on biological sex. A government spokesperson said: 'We are taking strong action to protect academic freedom and free speech, which are fundamental to our world-leading universities. 'This includes introducing new duties on universities to ensure they are robust in promoting and protecting free speech on campus. It also comes alongside the firm steps the Office for Students is already taking, through fines and new guidance, to ensure universities remain beacons of academic freedom.' Sullivan's other work includes a review commissioned by the previous Conservative government and published in March 2025 of barriers to research on sex and gender. The latest report's call for evidence received 140 responses, the majority from people agreeing with gender-critical views – defined as a belief that biological sex is unchanging and should not be conflated with gender. Sullivan blamed increasing layers of management and an insecure career structure for reducing academic autonomy, making researchers more vulnerable to internal and external pressures. 'Excessive and cumbersome bureaucratic processes have exacerbated the problem by providing levers for activists to exert influence. Academic institutions need to examine their policies and processes carefully to avoid these unintended outcomes,' she said. 'When fundamental issues cannot be investigated or debated openly, this undermines our academic institutions, it hurts individuals and it compromises the integrity of research. The suppression of research often harms the very groups that activists claim to support.' The report said: 'The decline of democratic academic governance means that, in most universities, the majority of academics engaged in teaching and research have little say or voice in how their universities are run.' It recommends that universities help students to see 'robust disagreement as an opportunity for intellectual growth rather than a threat'. They should also 'avoid directing staff or students to mental health support resources in response to the presence of views with which they disagree'. Many of the submissions detailed how research involving sex and gender was opposed or downgraded by other staff or administrators. It also included examples where Sullivan was targeted, including a planned talk that led to a one-day conference being cancelled in 2020. Kathleen Stock, the professor of philosophy who resigned from the University of Sussex after protests and hostility from other academics, submitted detailed evidence on the three-year campaign of opposition she experienced for her gender-critical views. Stock revealed a catalogue of abuse on campus and social media dating back to 2018, escalating to protests in autumn 2021 that she described as 'a sustained campaign of intimidation' that led to her resignation. A spokesperson for Universities UK, representing vice-chancellors, said: 'In practice universities are bound by law to protect the free speech of individuals who have very different views on contentious topics. They are required both to allow and facilitate protest, and to prevent that protest creating an intimidatory or chilling environment on campus or from preventing staff and students from pursuing their work and studies. 'We will carefully consider this report as part of our work in supporting universities as they navigate these difficult issues.'

A British man found dead in Arizona more than a decade ago has finally been identified, thanks to a pioneering DNA technology. Michael Hill, 75, died in February 2013 while visiting a friend in the United States, but his identity remained a mystery for 12 years. For over a decade, Mr Hill was known only as the " Maricopa County John Doe 2013". He had arrived at his friend's home with no belongings other than the clothes he was wearing, and without close relatives to identify him, his case remained unsolved. However, researchers from both the UK and US have now successfully restored Mr Hill's identity using a cutting-edge method called Investigative Genetic Genealogy (IGG). This innovative technique combines advanced DNA analysis with extensive genealogical searches, marking the first time a UK citizen has been identified through this process. The resolution of Mr Hill's case has been hailed as "a historic milestone" in forensic identification. Experts believe this breakthrough could pave the way for the wider adoption of IGG tools in the UK, potentially leading to the closure of numerous other long-unsolved cases. Dr Craig Paterson, who led the work from Sheffield Hallam University, said: 'It is a privilege to see the team solve this case and to restore Michael's name and identity. 'This case proves that IGG can be used in the UK to identify distant relatives and generate leads in cases that have remained unsolved using other investigative techniques. 'There are lots more unsolved cases in the UK where IGG can be used and we will continue to work with our partners and students to ensure that as many cases as possible benefit from this expertise.' The technology can help investigators identify distant relatives of a subject, whereas regular DNA testing usually identifies close family members, Dr Paterson explained. It relies on the millions of members of the public who have taken consumer DNA tests and carried out genetic genealogical searches on platforms such as FamilyTreeDNA and GEDmatch, said David Gurney, director of the Investigative Genetic Genealogy Centre at Ramapo College in New Jersey. The investigation of Mr Hill's case was led by researchers and students from Sheffield Hallam University, the Ramapo College Investigative Genetic Genealogy Centre, and Silverwell Research in London. The team gathered information the police and coroner's officer in Arizona held about Mr Hill, and the team found that Mr Hill had left his friend's house on the day he died, and returned four hours later complaining that he did not feel well. He laid down in a guest bedroom but a short time after began to convulse and went unresponsive. The friend called 911 and emergency service personnel responded to the scene and death was pronounced at that location. The friend Mr Hill visited in the Phoenix area provided a name, Michael Sydney Hill, and date of birth to the authorities. But this information alone could not be used to confirm Hill's identity. Traditional means of identification employed by Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner (MCOME) also did not yield a positive result. There was no identification on his person, and he had no siblings, children, or close relatives to contact and provide a positive identification. 'He was still connected to parts of the family – but there was just a loss of contact,' Dr Paterson said. 'It happens a lot more than you would think.' The case remained cold for more than a decade until the team managed to trace a distant cousin of Mr Hill using DNA taken from his body, combined with genealogical analysis. The relative provided a DNA test and Michael Hill's identity was finally confirmed. 'He was born in 1937 so finding a living relative was difficult,' Dr Paterson said. 'We are happy that there was closure. 'That's the aim – it's to take away that uncertainty.' IGG technology has been mainly used in the United States, Canada, and Australia – but researchers hope to increase its use in the UK. Cairenn Binder, director of the IGG Certificate Programme at Ramapo College, said: 'Investigative genetic genealogy was integral to solving the case of Mr Hill because as an unidentified person with only a lead on a possible name and no next of kin, genetic genealogy research was required to restore his identity. 'Advanced DNA testing and shared DNA with his distant relatives allowed investigators to confirm his identity and memorialize him after more than twelve years as a John Doe. 'This case is a historic milestone for the implementation of IGG in the UK, as Mr Hill is the first UK citizen to be identified with IGG research.'
