Research has linked poor sleep and certain dietary habits to an increased risk of cognitive decline. Making a few simple changes to your nighttime routine can make a big difference. By avoiding certain habits, such as consuming sugary drinks and heavy meals before bed, you can help support brain health and potentially lower your risk of Alzheimer's.
What is Alzheimer's disease?
Alzheimer's disease is the leading cause of dementia, characterized by a build up of proteins in the brain that form amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles.
This process causes brain cells to die and the brain to shrink over time.
According to MayoClinic, initial symptoms include forgetfulness, particularly of recent events or conversations. As the disease progresses, it leads to severe memory loss and impairs daily functioning. In advanced stages, it can cause life-threatening complications such as dehydration, malnutrition, or infection. However, medications can help manage symptoms or slow cognitive decline.
Unfortunately, there is no cure for Alzheimer's. Although support programs and services can provide assistance to individuals with Alzheimer's and their caregivers.
6 things to avoid in the evening to prevent Alzheimer's disease
According to EatingWell, you should avoid consuming the following items to prevent Alzheimer's disease.
Heavy meals:
To promote better sleep and optimal cognitive function, avoid heavy meals at night. Eating a large meal close to bedtime can disrupt digestion, leading to indigestion, discomfort, and poor sleep quality.
For better sleep and brain health, try to finish your last substantial meal at least 2-3 hours before bedtime. Instead, opt for lighter, balanced options in the evening that include fiber, healthy fats, and protein to keep you satisfied without feeling weighed down.
Sugary sweetened beverages:
If you're used to having sweet tea or soda with dinner, it might be time to rethink that habit. Limiting sugary drinks altogether is crucial for brain health.
Research has shown that consuming just seven servings of sugar-sweetened beverages per week can significantly increase the risk of dementia. Excessive added sugars can lead to inflammation, insulin resistance, and oxidative stress, all of which can harm the brain over time.
Excess sodium:
Excess sodium has been associated with a greater chance of developing Alzheimer's disease, as it tends to increase inflammation, lower blood flow to the brain, and damage blood vessels.
Excess sodium may also lower nitric oxide levels (a compound that helps relax the blood vessels and helps support healthy circulation). To reduce your sodium intake, be aware of sodium-rich foods in your diet (e.g. canned soups, frozen dinners, processed snack foods).
Alcohol:
Your evening glass of wine might be affecting your brain health by disrupting your sleep. Quality sleep is essential for mental health and cognitive function, and consuming alcohol before bed can significantly impair sleep quality.
Alcohol can interfere with melatonin production, leading to fragmented sleep, reduced deep sleep, and frequent nighttime wake-ups.
Caffeine:
Consuming caffeine too close to bedtime can disrupt your sleep, which is crucial for brain health. Experts recommend 7-9 hours of sleep per night, and large doses of caffeine near bedtime can significantly impact sleep duration and quality. Research suggests avoiding coffee at least 8 hours before bedtime and highly caffeinated supplements at least 13 hours before sleep.
Dark chocolate:
While dark chocolate is often considered a healthy choice, eating it in the late afternoon or evening may not be the best idea. Dark chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, two stimulants that can disrupt sleep. Poor sleep is not only exhausting, but it's also a significant risk factor for long-term cognitive decline.

Mindfulness each day builds psychological resilience, improves emotional regulation, and enhances concentration. 2. Physical activity: Physical exercise is a well-documented stress reducer. Walking, yoga, or weightlifting reduces depression and anxiety and stimulates the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that supports healthy brain function. 3. Healthy sleep patterns: Chronic stress can disrupt sleep, which in turn negatively affects cognition. Just a daily walk can help prevent dementia and heart disease

A simple activity like walking has life-saving benefits. If it is done correctly, it can be the key to losing weight, lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, and boosting your memory, as well as reducing your risk for heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and more. With the elderly population projected to reach 19.1% by 2050, the burden is expected to grow significantly. Parallelly, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) continue to be the leading cause of death. In this context, lifestyle interventions like regular walking emerge as simple, cost-effective strategies to reduce the risks of both dementia and heart disease, especially among older adults in India. Understanding dementia and heart diseases in India According to the study published in the National Library of Medical Science (NLM), in India, dementia affects 7.4% of adults aged 60 and above, with variations based on age, education, gender, and rural or urban residence. Around 8.8 million individuals in this age group are living with dementia, necessitating tailored local planning and support, especially in states and subpopulations with higher prevalence among females and in rural areas. It is forecasted in the study of Changing demography and the challenge of dementia in India that by 2050, it is anticipated that 19.1% of India's population will be aged 60 years and above. Due to its large population, South Asia, particularly India, is expected to be a significant contributor to this rise, although variations may occur based on demographic differences in Kerala and Uttar Pradesh. Importance of walking speed to reduce risk of dementia The assessment of walking activity, conducted using the validated Lifetime Total Physical Activity Questionnaire, reveals that both the intensity and duration of walking play significant roles in influencing cognitive health outcomes. Participants were categorised based on walking frequency, intensity (low, moderate, or vigorous), and the stage of life when walking was initiated (midlife vs. late life). According to NLM research, physical activity is one of the protective and cost-effective practice activities against dementia, and recent studies show that even a single form of physical activity like walking can positively impact brain health. Walking requires no special training, costs nothing, and can be done almost anywhere, making it a practical choice across all ages. Importantly, a slow walking speed has been identified as a major risk factor for developing or worsening Alzheimer's-related symptoms. This implies an inverse relationship between walking and cognitive decline—the more consistently one walks, the lower the risk may be. Several long-term studies support this idea. For instance, older women who walked more frequently showed lower chances of cognitive decline over a period of 6–8 years. Similarly, elderly men who maintained regular walking routines had a significantly reduced risk of developing Alzheimer's dementia. Major findings indicate that individuals who engaged in regular, moderate-to-vigorous walking—especially those walking more than 360 minutes per week—showed a lower risk of Alzheimer's-related cognitive decline compared to non-walkers or those with lower-intensity activity. Notably, the timing of walking initiation also mattered: those who began walking in midlife (ages 40–64) demonstrated stronger cognitive protection than those who started in later life. How walking helps with heart diseases Multiple studies have shown that walking regularly, even for just 20 to 60 minutes a day, a few times a week, can significantly reduce key risk factors linked to heart disease. In a review of 14 walking-based intervention studies published in the National Library of Medical Science (published in 2009–2010), participants followed walking routines lasting anywhere from 3 weeks to 12 months. The results showed consistent improvements in cardiovascular fitness, which is a major factor in preventing heart disease. Participants reported better endurance, easier breathing during activity, and improved ability to exercise. Regular walking at a moderate intensity—the kind that makes you breathe faster, sweat lightly, or feel a bit flushed—was most effective in improving heart strength and blood flow. In some studies, walking even lowered blood pressure, especially in people with mild hypertension or those at risk due to age and other conditions. Other health benefits included: Reduced body fat and weight Improved cholesterol levels Increased distance walked without discomfort in people with circulation problems (like peripheral artery disease) These changes may seem small at first, but over time, they add up to a significant reduction in the risk of heart disease, stroke, and related complications. Iodine deficiency re-emerging partly because of Himalayan and sea salt Sharing the video, Dr Kazemi warned that the popularity of Himalayan salt and sea salt over iodised table salt is causing iodine deficiency in people. He wrote, 'From a Gastroenterologist: Did you know iodine deficiency, once nearly eradicated, is re-emerging partly due to the popularity of Himalayan salt and sea salt over iodised table salt.' What are the benefits of consuming iodised salt? Highlighting the benefits of iodine salt, the gastroenterologist shared that iodine is very important to prevent 'thyroid diseases and in pregnancy for fetal brain development.' 'To maintain adequate iodine levels, it's essential to use iodised salt or consume iodine-rich foods such as fish, dairy products, and seaweed,' he added. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), a trial involving more than 20,666 individuals from China, Germany, India, Italy, Malaysia, and South Africa found that iodine reduced mortality related to its deficiency disorders, reduced goitre (thyroid size), boosted physical and mental development in children, and lowered the risk of symptoms of hypothyroidism (reproductive failure/infertility, myxoedema, tiredness, lethargy, slowing of mental function, cold intolerance and/or cardiac complications). Another March 2024 study stated the benefits of iodised salt, including preventing thyroid problems, improving overall health, improving pregnancy outcomes, and improving physical and mental growth.
