MITI to help exporters navigate revised 19pct US tariff

KUALA LUMPUR: The Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) will work with other ministries and agencies to help Malaysian exporters adjust to the revised 19 per cent United States (US) tariff on Malaysian goods.
This includes maximising the use of Malaysia's 18 free trade agreements, strengthening market diversification and accelerating key industrial reform initiatives, MITI said in a statement today.
Policy frameworks under focus include the New Industrial Master Plan 2030, the Green Investment Strategy and the National Semiconductor Strategy, each aimed at enhancing efficiency, boosting productivity and positioning Malaysian companies to compete globally.
"MITI will continue to work closely with stakeholders to maximise the opportunities from this development," said minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.
"We remain committed to defending Malaysia's trade interests while fostering mutually beneficial partnerships with key economies, including the US."
The ministry also highlighted Malaysia's strong economic fundamentals, citing robust domestic demand and an investment realisation rate of over 85 per cent.
The US is Malaysia's largest export destination with trade valued at RM198.65 billion. It is also the country's largest source of foreign direct investment, with RM32.82 billion in approved investments recorded in 2024.
MITI said it will roll out targeted outreach programmes in the coming months to assist Malaysian companies, especially small and medium enterprises, in navigating the revised tariff landscape and identifying new export opportunities.

US tariff cut to ease pressure on Malaysia's high-tech exporters

KUALA LUMPUR: The reduction of the tariff imposed by the United States on Malaysian exports from 25 to 19 per cent was made possible following months of negotiations, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said the previous rate had posed economic concerns, particularly for Malaysia's semiconductor and electrical and electronics (E&E) sectors, which are key contributors to exports. "We negotiated for months because the 25 per cent tariff was too high. Alhamdulillah, it has now been reduced to 19 per cent. "If it had remained at 25 per cent, it would have badly affected our economy, as Malaysia is a hub for semiconductors and E&E in Asia," he said.

Tariff Cut by US Won't Affect Malaysia's Commodity Competitiveness, Minister Says

The US' 19% import tariff on Malaysian goods will not affect the global competitiveness of the country's commodities, Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said. He noted that the revised rate, down from the previous 25%, remains fair and on par with regional peers, including Indonesia, the world's top palm oil producer, which is also subject to the same tariff. 'Indonesia is number one, and we're number two in palm oil. They're also subject to a 19% tariff, so this is reasonable and fair,' he said when asked about the potential impact of the tariff on Malaysia's commodity exports. The revised US tariff came into effect at 12:01am on Aug 1, 2025, with a seven-day grace period granted for goods already in transit to mitigate immediate supply chain disruptions.

Kosovo eliminates tariffs on US goods

Kosovo's caretaker Prime Minister Albin Kurti said the 0% tariff will affect the growth of trade exchange and increase investment. (EPA Images pic) PRISTINA : Kosovo on Friday eliminated tariffs on all goods from the United States, a day after President Donald Trump unveiled new tariffs on trading partners across the globe but not on Pristina. The Balkan nation had applied a 10% tariff on US goods and its goods are subject to the baseline 10% tariff that the Trump administration imposed in April. 'Kosovo welcomes American products to its market,' said Kosovo's caretaker Prime Minister Albin Kurti, announcing the 0% tariff on US goods. 'We strongly believe that this will affect the growth of trade exchange and increase investments,' he told his cabinet. Public sentiment in the landlocked territory of around 1.6 million people has been strongly pro-American since a 1999 US-led Nato air campaign that stopped the crackdown of Serbian armed forces on ethnic Albanians and paved the way for Kosovo's declaration of independence from Serbia a decade later. US flags are common in the capital, Pristina, where one of the largest avenues honours former president George W. Bush, while Bill Clinton has both a boulevard named after him and a statue in his honour.
