Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati said the discussion on Operation Sindoor, starting in Parliament on Monday, should be approached by both the ruling alliance and the opposition by "rising above partisan politics".
The first week of disruption in Parliament's Monsoon Session is set to give way to a fiery debate on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor from Monday as the ruling alliance and the opposition prepare to lock horns over the two issues steeped in national security and foreign policy imperatives.
The BJP-led ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and opposition parties are expected to field their top guns during the discussion in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
"The discussion on 'Operation Sindoor' starting in Parliament today should be approached by both the ruling party and the opposition by rising above partisan politics," Mayawati posted on X in Hindi.
"Going forward, the government and the opposition should work together under a solid strategy to ensure that no woman's sindoor is wiped away and no mother has to lose her son; this is also the demand of the time," the BSP chief added in the same post.
Sources said on Sunday that Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar would be speaking on the issues amid indications that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may make an intervention to convey his government's "robust" stand against terrorism.
Leaders of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, respectively, may lead the charge against the government along with Samajwadi Party's Akhilesh Yadav, besides a host of other members.
According to the listed agenda of the Lok Sabha, the House will have a "special discussion on India's strong, successful and decisive Operation Sindoor in response to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam".

‘No formal talks on F-35 jets yet': India clarifies after Trump tariff announcement

Singh clarified that the decision to cease military action was taken bilaterally between India and Pakistan. 'The discussion to cease military action took place directly between India and Pakistan through the existing channels of communication between the two-armed forces, and it was initiated at Pakistan's request.' Responding to a question on third-party mediation, Singh reiterated New Delhi's long-standing policy: 'As regards any proposal for third-party mediation, our longstanding position remains that any outstanding issue with Pakistan will be discussed only bilaterally. This has been made clear to all nations, including by the Prime Minister to the US President.' He emphasised that the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership is underpinned by mutual trust and respect for sovereignty: 'The India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership is anchored in mutual trust, shared interests, goodwill and robust engagement between our citizens. The partnership has also benefited from growing strategic convergence and cooperation.' Singh also reaffirmed that India remains committed to strategic autonomy despite deepening ties with Washington. 'The Government of India closely evaluates all its external partnerships, including those in the defence and strategic domains, through the prism of India's national interest and commitment to strategic autonomy.'

HC quashes FIR against CM in BJP ‘defamation' case
Justice K. Lakshman of the Telangana High Court, on Friday, quashed the proceedings related to the First Information Report (FIR) issued against Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, pending before a local court in Hyderabad. The case was registered against the CM based on a private complaint lodged by BJP General Secretary Kasam Venkateshwarlu, alleging that Mr. Revanth Reddy defamed BJP by stating that 'the party would do away with reservation to BCs, SCs and STs if it came to power'. The statement was made by the CM at a public meeting in Kothagudem during the 2024 Lok Sabha election campaign, the complainant said. Challenging this, Mr. Revanth Reddy filed a criminal petition in the HC, which set aside the FIR.

Acclaimed academician Vasanthi Devi passes away at 87
V. Vasanthi Devi, former Vice Chancellor of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University and former chairperson of the Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women, passed away in Chennai on Friday following a sudden heart attack. She was 87. Prof. Vasanthi Devi was the first woman vice chancellor of a university in Tamil Nadu, a post that she held for two consecutive terms from 1992 to 1998. After her retirement, she was a member of the State Planning Commission (SPC) before being appointed as the Chairperson of the Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women (TNSCW) in 2002. A high point in her long list of achievements was when she contested against AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa in the R.K. Nagar constituency in 2016 on the VCK symbol as the common candidate of the DMDK-led People's Welfare Front. Interestingly, the contest pitted her against a chief minister whose government appointed her as the Vice Chancellor, nominated her to the SPC and then to the TNSCW. Born in 1938 in Dindigul, Prof. Vasanthi Devi came from an illustrious family. She was the granddaughter of Vengal Chakkarai Chettiar, a freedom fighter, trade unionist and Christian theologist who was the president of the All India Trade Union Congress between 1954 and 1957. She came to Chennai (then Madras) in 1954 to join Queen Mary's College and later did her Masters from Presidency College. She did her PhD at University of the Philippines, Manila in 1980. Even while pursuing her academic career, she actively took up several causes – women's rights, child rights and, above all, quality education for all. Prof. Vasanthi Devi is survived by her son Narendra Subramanian, Professor of Political Science, McGill University, Montreal, Canada, and daughter Ajantha Subramanian, author and anthropologist. Her body will be donated to the Kilpauk Medical College, the family said. 'She was a great intellectual but never lost touch with the grassroot,' said Sudha Ramalingam, Senior Advocate and a longtime companion. 'That connection made all the difference,' she added. She was active with Palli Kalvi Pathukappu Iyakkam (movement for saving school education) till her last days and strongly opposed the National Education Policy and advocated free and equitable education for children. Prof. Vasanthi Devi had also pushed for empowerment of School management committees. She firmly believed that schools, particularly in rural areas, must function with greater autonomy. She ensured that teachers and parents of underprivileged children were part of such committees, Ms. Ramalingam observed. CM's condolences In his condolence message, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said, 'She had been campaigning against the ill effects of the National Education Policy 2020, which Tamil Nadu has consistently opposed.' He also noted that she had voiced strong criticism of the Draft UGC Regulations, 2025. Mr. Stalin added that she had been vocal in opposing the role of religion in education. 'Her sudden demise is an irreparable loss to the education sector and to human rights-based activism.' In his condolence message, P. Shanmugam, CPI(M) State general secretary, said that Prof. Vasanthi Devi was a staunch supporter of the Left movement and always stood up for the rights of the common people.
