Asia's reliance on Middle Eastern oil laid bare by Iran attacks
[PARIS] Oil buyers and traders across Asia are watching the escalation of a conflict around Iran with bated breath, as the top importing region braces for the impact of any disruption of exports from the Persian Gulf.
Asia buys more than four-fifths of all the crude produced in the Middle East, and 90 per cent of that goes through the Strait of Hormuz, according to data from Kpler.
Here are three key concerns for the Asian market as the conflict expands:
The Iran-China link
China, the world's largest oil refiner, gets about 14 per cent of its crude from Iran, Kpler data show. Actual flows are likely higher, with some imports from the Islamic Republic masked as shipments from not just Malaysia, but also the United Arab Emirates and Oman, in order to circumvent US sanctions.
While China's larger state-owned processors seek to avoid breaching the bans, the country does not as a whole recognize unilateral US sanctions. And these discounted flows are vital for a hard-pressed private refining sector.
There's growing concern those shipments could be disrupted. That has boosted demand for crude that can load on the Indian Ocean side of the Strait, including Abu Dhabi's Murban and Omani crude. Other grades that may benefit from any threat to Iranian flows are Russian ESPO, which loads from the Far East port of Kozmino, as well as Angolan varieties.

Iran's fuel exports
Iran does not just ship crude – it is also a sizable exporter of fuel oil, selling mostly high-sulfur varieties used for shipping or as refinery feedstocks.
Much of that supply eventually finds its way into ship-refueling hubs including Fujairah in the UAE, Singapore and Malaysia. The so-called straight-run fuel oil that can replace crude is typically exported to the relatively simple, low-margin processors in China known as teapots.
Iran also has a lot of natural gas – sharing one of the world's largest deposits with Qatar. While the Islamic Republic uses most of that domestically, it sells by-products including liquefied petroleum gas and condensates internationally.
China's giant plastics sector relies on Iran for almost a quarter of its imports of LPG, which can be used for cooking and heating but also processed into petrochemicals used as plastic building blocks. That relationship has only intensified after flows from the US, traditionally China's largest supplier, collapsed because of trade conflicts earlier this year.
'If there is a complete stoppage of Iranian LPG material or even, say, a halving of the average intake to China, China has few alternatives of substance,' said Samantha Hartke, head of market analysis for the Americas at Vortexa.
Iran's influence on key shipping routes
The vast majority of Asia's imports come through the Strait of Hormuz, making this waterway a focus for oil merchants. While Iran may choose not to block the conduit, it's also able to threaten the safety of navigation through the Red Sea – the shortest route between Asia and Europe – using proxies such as Yemen's Houthis. About 9 per cent of global seaborne trade normally passes through the Bab el-Mandeb chokepoint, or more than US$2 trillion worth of goods a year.
That may affect Asia's supply from Russia, which has turned to markets in the East after being increasingly shunned by the US and traditional buyers in Europe because of its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Ships carrying those massive volumes – ranging from flagship Urals crude to naphtha – must decide whether they continue to risk the Red Sea route, or face weeks of delays by going around South Africa instead. Hong Kong's sixfold jump in share sales drives boom year in Asia
[HONG KONG] Hong Kong's having a banner year as it marches towards becoming the second-largest market globally for share sales for the first time since 2012. Proceeds from listings and additional share sales in the Asian financial hub in the first half have reached about US$33 billion, poised for a sixfold jump from a year ago, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Offerings from electric carmakers BYD and Xiaomi raised the most, followed by Contemporary Amperex Technology Co (CATL), which had the world's biggest new listing this year. Investors have brushed aside tariffs and geopolitical concerns as deals flooded in Hong Kong – including three of the four biggest stock offerings in the world in 2025. Equity strategists remain upbeat about local stocks after the Hang Seng became one of the world's best-performing indexes this year. And with the throng of companies lining up with billion-dollar offerings, it's shaping up to be a good year for investment bankers in the city. 'We're seeing a lot more comfort from global investors around the global and regional macro picture, which is leading them to reassess and increase their exposure to the region including to Hong Kong and mainland China,' said Sunil Dhupelia, co-head of Asia Pacific ECM at JPMorgan Chase. 'Assuming that markets remain stable, it's likely to be very busy in the second half of the year.' Chinese companies that already have shares trading in Shenzhen or Shanghai have been flocking to Hong Kong for additional listings. Those so-called A-H deals accounted for about three-quarters of Hong Kong's total proceeds of US$13.4 billion from first-time share sales in 2025, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The high-profile deal's success shows industry leaders are still able to find global buyers even in an unfavorable environment. Hong Kong listing proceeds are poised to double to a four-year high of more than US$22 billion, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Big deals to look forward to later this year include those of electric carmaker Seres Group, heavy-machinery maker Sany Heavy Industry and pig breeder Muyuan Foods. Hong Kong Exchanges & Clearing, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary, is so fired up about the surge in business that it's parading the iconic gong used to introduce new listings in an unprecedented two-week public tour via a 'gongmobile'. Hong Kong is leading share sales overall in all of Asia-Pacific, where first-half proceeds have climbed almost 30 per cent to about US$100 billion in 2025, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. In India, which led the region in share sales last year, total proceeds stand at about US$20 billion, on track for a drop of more than 20 per cent in the first half, after a stock-market rout led to a slow start. Despite underperforming regional peers, the benchmark Nifty 50 Index has rallied as of late and is on track to post its best quarterly gain in more than a year. That optimism is spilling over to deals, with HDB Financial Services' US$1.5 billion initial public offering (IPO), and Tata Capital's soon-to-come US$2 billion IPO. While geopolitical tensions are bound to continue to complicate decisions for corporate issuers and investors for months to come, Asia is on track to cap a great year of deals. 'We don't expect issuance activity to be slowing,' said Rob Chan, head of Asia ECM syndicate at Citigroup. 'In fact, despite all the uncertainties driven by tariffs and geopolitical tensions in recent months, issuance activity has been very strong.' Going forward, expect to see deals in Hong Kong from companies that mainly rely on Chinese domestic consumption because they are best shielded from tariff effects and geopolitics, according to Christine Xu, the partner in charge of Chinese ECM transactions at the Linklaters law firm. Democrat Wyden presses Bessent to commit to US sanctions on Russia

In a letter to Bessent, Senator Ron Wyden also sought answers on how the U.S.-Ukraine critical minerals deal and investment agreement would help improve Ukraine's post-war security and not benefit any entity or country that aided Russia's war effort. Wyden cited Bessent's comments during his confirmation hearing that he was prepared to strengthen Russian sanctions, including on oil majors, if Trump requested this to help end the Ukraine war, which Bessent called "one of the greatest tragedies of my adult life." "I ask that you reaffirm your commitment to stringently enforce these sanctions and answer questions about how you envision other measures pursued by this administration, including agreements with Ukraine, potentially working in conjunction with these sanctions," Wyden wrote. The Oregon Democrat, who has opposed most of Trump's trade and tax agenda advanced by Bessent, asked the Treasury chief to explain comments he made to Fox News Channel in which he did not rule out bringing Russia back into the SWIFT international banking network. Russia was expelled from the payments messaging system after its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. "Would Treasury allow Russian banks to rejoin SWIFT absent a comprehensive peace agreement with Ukraine that fully addresses Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine?" Wyden asked in a series of questions for Bessent to answer. Wyden also asked whether Bessent would continue the U.S. Treasury's implementation of commitments by G7 leaders to curtail Russia's use of the international financial system to support its war against Ukraine. Sweet endings at Coda
[SINGAPORE] The centrepiece of many watering holes is a gleaming display of liquor bottles behind the bar, in a parade of familiar brand names. Yet what is striking at Coda isn't this visual cue, but its glaring absence. There are no bottles behind the bar, nor brand names on the menu. These omissions were the deliberate choice of owner Michel Lu. The aim is to encourage customers to judge each drink 'on its own merit', rather than rely on recognisable names to form conclusions, he said. 'I wanted this to be a clean and pure space,' said Lu, who also founded pan-Asian craft spirits brand The Orientalist Spirits. 'It's not about whether this is a Macallan cocktail, or an Orientalist Spirits cocktail. What matters are the flavours, and how you enjoy the drink.' Finally, locate a blinking blue sensor beside a candle – a wave of the hand will trigger a door to open into Coda's main 16-seater room. The experience is meant to be disorienting, said Lu. 'When you first arrive, you're like, 'What do I do?' We wanted a portal that would insulate the actual space, so that we'd never be disrupted by light or sound.' An adjoining 10-seater room is usually closed to the public, but can be booked for private events. Soft furnishings – a carpeted floor, false suede ceiling and thick curtains – create a cosy cocoon while absorbing sound. Warm cove lighting and a gentle woody fragrance complete the vibe. In the spotlight – literally – is a custom-built bar counter near the centre of the room. As the only spot with direct lighting, the bar was designed to resemble a stage, with the bartender as its star, said Lu. The open concept also invites guests to even go behind the counter to speak with the bartender. A coda is the concluding segment of a piece of music or literary work. General manager Treyna Zhang hopes the bar can similarly be a place where customers round off their day. 'We look forward to being that sweet spot, that little happy ending for you at the end.' Spotlighting Asian spirits and flavours Coda's cocktail menu features 16 signature tipples in four sections, each themed after a different mood. For instance: tranquillity for Blue Hour, eternal happiness for Elysian Fields, chaos for Fragmented Consciousness, and bliss for Chasing Fireflies. Blue Hour – an actual term that refers to the period just before sunrise or after sunset – thus features subtler flavours, while Fragmented Consciousness offers experimental options that incorporate unlikely ingredients from kimchi to artichoke. At Coda, Asian spirits and flavours are the focus – beginning with a complimentary welcome drink of local black tea infused with bergamot liqueur, inspired by a classic negroni. 'Whether you're from South Asia, China, South Korea, Japan or Taiwan, tea unites Asia. The West drinks tea, but it's from Asia,' said Lu, noting that several cocktails on the menu contain tea notes. These include the bar's bestseller, the Coda Martini, in which vodka is mixed with rooibos tea and tieguanyin, then finished off with a dash of Calvados. A re-imagining of the Singapore Sling, the cocktail Fling retains only the original recipe's gin base and pineapple juice. 'The Singapore Sling is a very dated, sexist drink from colonial times; it's not a great drink, but it represents Singapore,' said Lu. 'I felt it was time to create something more befitting of Singapore today.' Fling is a variation of the Singapore Fling, which Lu launched in 2024 at Marina Bay Sands' Spago Bar & Lounge. 'Back then, I had actually created the Singapore Fling as a contemporary take on the Singapore Sling,' he explained. 'But we wanted to do a more elegant and cleaner version for Coda, which resulted in Fling.' The Singapore Fling and Fling share a recipe: a gin base infused with chrysanthemum, snow pear and red dates, then combined with Lillet rose, hibiscus sour plum tea, pineapple juice, calamansi juice and ginger flower water. The difference is in the execution: the Singapore Fling is shaken, while Fling is clarified. Those looking to turn up the heat can order Smoke, Coda's only hot cocktail. Described by Lu as an 'Asian-style' hot toddy, Smoke is a blend of three whiskeys; honey lemon fermented for two-and-a-half years; and the Japanese roasted tea iribancha, for an extra touch of smokiness. Besides cocktails, Coda offers limited categories of beer, sake, champagne and wine. A Japanese food menu will be launched in July, and will offer a la carte dishes such as udon, bara chirashi and sashimi. Fling
