Lion owners arrested after an attack on woman and her 2 children in Pakistan

LAHORE, July 7, (AP): The owners of a pet lion that escaped from a farmhouse and injured a woman and her two children have been arrested in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore, authorities said Sunday. The arrest comes after dramatic video footage surfaced showing the lion leaping over a wall before attacking the victims in a residential area.
The woman and her 5- and 7-year-old children sustained injuries to their faces and arms on Wednesday night when the lion escaped from its cage, police official Faisal Kamran said.
According to a police report, the children's father told police that the lion's owners stood by and watched as the animal clawed at his family, making no effort to restrain it. The lion later returned to the owners' farmhouse and was relocated to a wildlife park, police said. Keeping exotic animals such as lions is considered a status symbol among some wealthy Pakistanis, despite the legal requirements and high fees associated with ownership.

Russia's ex-minister found dead hours after being fired in an apparent suicide,

MOSCOW, July 7, (AP): Russian's transport minister was found dead Monday, hours after being dismissed by President Vladimir Putin, in what officials said was an apparent suicide. Roman Starovoyt, who served as Russia's transport minister since May 2024, was fired in a presidential decree earlier in the day. His dismissal came after a weekend of travel chaos when airports grounded hundreds of flights during the busy vacation season due to the threat of attacks from Kyiv. Also on Monday, Russia fired more than 100 drones at civilian areas of Ukraine overnight, authorities said. At least 10 civilians were killed and 38 injured, including three children, in Russian attacks over the previous 24 hours, Ukrainian officials said. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. 3 dead, 10 injured in South Philadelphia shooting and person in custody

PHILADELPHIA, July 7, (AP): Three people were killed and 10 others injured in a shooting early Monday in a South Philadelphia neighborhood, authorities said. The three people who died were adults, and two of the wounded were juveniles, Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel told reporters. The shooting happened shortly before 1 a.m. along a residential street in Grays Ferry, he said. "We have numerous rounds that were shot on the block,' Bethel said. Police said one person with a weapon was taken into custody. Bethel said police had already responded to the same block late Saturday into early Sunday and some arrests were made. It wasn't immediately known what prompted the shooting. "This is coward, want-to-be-thugs stuff,' Bethel said. The shooting happened after other shootings in the city and elsewhere around the US over the Fourth of July weekend. Those included at least eight people struck by gunfire near a South Philadelphia nightclub.

Unusual bee attack in French town leaves 24 injured, 3 critically

AURILLAC, France, July 7, (AP): A unusual attack by bees in the French town of Aurillac has left 24 people injured, including three in critical condition, according to local authorities. The Prefecture of Cantal, in south-central France, said passersby were stung over a period of about 30 minutes on Sunday morning. Firefighters and medical teams were rushed to the scene to treat the victims while police set up a security perimeter until the bees stopped their attack. The three people in critical condition were evacuated to a local hospital. Pierre Mathonier, the mayor of Aurillac, told French broadcaster France 3 the incident may have been related to Asian hornets threatening beehives that had been installed on the roof terrace of a downtown hotel over 10 years ago. He said that this had likely caused the bees to become aggressive. "All ended well,' he said. "The emergency services were perfectly coordinated. There was no panic in Aurillac, but a number of people were stung.'
