Diriyah Company awards $600m Diriyah Square retail contract to Salini Saudi Arabia
Diriyah Company has awarded a SAR2.249bn ($600m) contract to Salini Saudi Arabia, a subsidiary of the Webuild Group, for the construction of Diriyah Square — a flagship retail district at the heart of the Diriyah masterplan.
Part of the wider 'City of Earth' vision, Diriyah Square will feature over 400 retail, dining, and leisure brands within a pedestrian-focused setting that blends modern experiences with Najdi-inspired architecture. The project aims to redefine the retail and lifestyle offering in Diriyah and, more broadly, in Riyadh.
The contract marks Salini's third major engagement on the Diriyah Square development. The company is currently advancing construction on one of the world's largest underground car parks, with 10,500 spaces, integrated bus stations, taxi and VIP drop-off zones, and a four-lane underground gyratory road that connects the entire subterranean network. Salini is also nearing completion of structural works for key above-ground assets including hotels, branded residences, offices, and the Grand Mosque.
Under the new contract, Salini will construct 73 buildings across a total built-up area of 365,340 square metres, including 400 shell-and-core retail units. The scope of work includes facades, finishes, and fit-outs. Each structure will reflect traditional Najdi design principles to create an immersive pedestrianised retail environment that celebrates 300 years of cultural heritage.

Pietro Salini, CEO of Webuild, added: 'We are proud to contribute to a project of such symbolic and strategic importance to Saudi Arabia. This will further strengthen our presence in the Kingdom and positively impact both the area and the local community. We are excited about developing this new phase of Diriyah Square, an integral part of an iconic project. The Webuild Group has been present in Saudi Arabia since 1966, delivering more than 90 projects. We remain committed to supporting the Kingdom in developing some of the world's most complex infrastructure projects, particularly in areas such as civil buildings, sustainable mobility, and desalination.'
Commercial anchor
Diriyah Square serves as the commercial anchor of the larger SAR237bn ($63.2bn) Diriyah masterplan. It will connect international luxury brands with regional artisans and offer a mix of retail, cultural, and entertainment experiences. The square will house 400 of the 1,000 total retail outlets envisioned across the 14-square-kilometer development.
With this contract, Diriyah Company has now awarded contracts worth over SAR100bn ($26bn) since inception, including SAR20bn ($5bn) in the first half of 2025 alone.
When fully developed, Diriyah is expected to contribute SAR70bn ($18.6bn) to Saudi Arabia's GDP, generate close to 180,000 jobs, and become home to around 100,000 residents. It will also feature cultural and entertainment landmarks such as the Royal Diriyah Opera House, the Diriyah Arena, museums, a university, the Royal Golf Club, and the Royal Equestrian & Polo Club.

Acwa Power signs pacts to export renewable energy and green hydrogen to Europe
Saudi Arabia's Acwa Power has signed preliminary agreements to export renewable energy and green hydrogen to Europe under the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) project. A multi-party deal was signed by Acwa Power with Italy's Edison, France's TotalEnergies Renewables, Zhero Europe from Netherlands and Germany's EnBW, Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Energy said on Sunday. "This deal establishes a collaborative framework to assess the market demand and feasibility of developing large-scale renewable energy projects dedicated for export in Saudi Arabia and the creation of a corridor to deliver generated electricity to Europe," it said. Acwa Power also signed individual pacts with companies involved in the development of electricity corridors, including technical consultant Cesi (Italy) and HVDC technology and cable providers Prysmian (Italy), GE Vernova, Siemens Energy (Germany) and Hitachi (France). "These agreements aim to develop advanced energy transmission corridors that enhance supply reliability and the efficiency of cross-border energy infrastructure," the ministry said. A joint development agreement was also signed with EnBW to collaborate on the first phase of the Yanbu Green Hydrogen Hub, which is planned to be ready for commercial operations by 2030. The hub seeks to be a fully integrated base with its own captive electricity generation from renewable sources, desalination plants to support its hydrogen electrolysis and ammonia conversion facilities, and an export terminal. The project leverages Saudi Arabia's potential to develop renewable energy at competitive rates and supply global industrial demand, the ministry said. The latest pacts, which were signed in Riyadh, are part of the IMEC, which was announced during the G20 summit in 2023. The project consists of an eastern route connecting India to the Gulf and a northern pathway connecting the Gulf to Europe. The cross-border, ship-to-rail transit corridors are expected to reduce shipping costs across the network and support trade in goods and services to, from and between the UAE, Saudi Arabia, India and Europe. The combined exports from these regions are projected to account for 44 per cent of global trade by 2030. Acwa Power, backed by Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund, is one of the largest renewable energy developers in the Middle East. It currently has operations in 14 countries across the Middle East, Africa, and Central and South-east Asia. It is an investor in and operator of 101 power generation and water desalination projects in operation, construction and advanced development with an overall portfolio size of about $107.5 billion as of February. Last week, Saudi Arabia signed agreements worth more than 31 billion riyals ($8.3 billion) for seven renewable energy projects with an Acwa Power -led consortium to boost the kingdom's green energy capacity. In February, Acwa Power also signed a preliminary agreement with the German company Securing Energy for Europe (Sefe) to produce and supply green hydrogen to Europe. Under the pact, Acwa Power and Sefe will establish a hydrogen bridge between Saudi Arabia and Germany, with an initial target of supplying 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030. Acwa Power will act as the lead developer, investor, and operator of green hydrogen and green ammonia production assets. Sefe will be a co-investor and the primary off-taker to market the green hydrogen to its German and European customers, the companies said at the time. The Saudi company is also a partner in the $5 billion Neom Green Hydrogen project, the world's largest, which is expected to be completed next year. The other venture partners are Neom and the US-based Air Products, which has secured an off-take agreement for all the green ammonia produced at the site.

Obtaining the internationally recognized Gemmology Diploma Programme certificate unlocks a wealth of career opportunities in the fast-growing global gemstone market, where demand for qualified experts continues to rise. This demand is particularly significant in light of the limited number of Bahraini professionals in the field and the increasing need to develop local expertise. As a result, programme graduates are well-equipped to pursue rewarding careers across both the local and international jewelry industries. The programme is part of DANAT's broader initiative to offer globally certified educational opportunities in gemmological sciences. Participants will also have access to the use of internationally respected professional titles, including FGA, which denotes completion of the Gemmology Diploma. The Gem-A Gemmology Foundation Programme is designed to support individuals aspiring to build or advance a career in the gemstone and jewellery sectors. It provides a rigorous introduction to the field and is particularly valuable for those looking to establish a strong foundational skillset. With over 110 years of expertise embedded in its curriculum, the programme is delivered by a team of experienced and certified instructors. The programme spans 16 weeks, with instruction held one day per week over a four-month period. Participants will engage in over 300 hours of integrated theoretical and practical training, delivered within a cutting-edge educational setting designed to foster personalised learning and skill development. Commenting on the launch, Mrs. Noora Jamsheer, CEO of DANAT, highlighted the programme's transformative potential: "This internationally accredited programme presents a valuable opportunity for individuals aspiring to build a sustainable and impactful career in the gemstone sector, whether in the fields of research, academia, laboratory analysis, or the commercial jewellery industry. By enrolling in these programmes, participants gain access to cutting-edge knowledge and hands-on expertise that empower them to launch entrepreneurial initiatives, strengthen their investment acumen in gemstones, and explore a broad spectrum of roles across the entire jewellery industry." Mrs. Jamsheer further affirmed her confidence in the role these programmes will play in addressing regional talent gaps, and emphasised their alignment with Bahrain's Vision 2030, particularly in nurturing human capital in specialised strategic fields. By cultivating a new generation of highly qualified gemmological professionals, DANAT reinforces its dedication to advancing Bahrain's status as a global hub for gemstones and jewellery expertise and ensuring long-term industry development in line with international standards. -Ends- About DANAT: Bahrain Institute for Pearls and Gemstones (DANAT) was established in 2017, under the aegis of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain.
