PCB Scottish Festival hosts first ever 2-day event
It started Friday night and goes through Saturday.
Event goers can expect to see axe throwing, live music, a petting zoo, traditional Scottish food, and the fan-favorite Highland Games this year.

It began Friday with the first Calling of the Clans ceremony. The ceremony allows attendees to show their pride for their ancestors and family names while sharing their love for Scottish culture and tradition.
'It was calling them in just as kind of a joyful celebration to kick off the games and to have our families and clans here with us. To do that, they got a chance to do their clan cry and their war chant. And it was really something to see. I really enjoyed it,' PCB Scottish Festival Committee Member Bill McCurdy said.
This is the 31st Scottish festival, and it hasn't always been in Panama City Beach. Before 2016, the festival was held at the Grace Presbyterian Church in Panama City.
'It was hard because I didn't want to leave the church, but the, the first of all, just outgrowth outgrew the grounds and it was hemorrhaging money. So we had to make a choice. So we moved over here to the courts. The church is always invited to come in and participate, and we don't charge them a vendor fee,' McCurdy said.
Saturday's schedule is jam-packed; gates will open at 9 a.m., and live music will start at 10 a.m.
The opening ceremony will be at noon, followed by live music throughout the day, but the most popular activity will be the Highland Games.
'It's individuals. They come over to the class, they compete, and they come from all over the country. And they're all competing, you know, for points… the best of the day, they get the big sword, the big claymore, and they get to walk around and get bragging rights,' McCurdy said.

He says the representatives of the different families are also a big attraction.
'These guys are very knowledgeable. They know about their families. They know the history of Scotland. They know the histories of their clans and their families, their tartans, what it all means to them. And some of them, it means a whole lot,' McCurdy added.
The festival will wrap up Saturday at around 5:30 p.m.

This is not a drill. David Tennant and Robert Carlyle are teaming up to lead ITV's newest true crime drama series The Hack, inspired by the harrowing phone hacking scandal. The unexpected duo will star alongside Toby Jones, Cara Theobold, Eve Myles, Rose Leslie, Katherine Kelly and Adrian Lester for what is likely to be one the best series we'll see from either of them. And we're not alone in our excitement for this. As soon as the first look images were shared on Instagram yesterday, fans were beside themselves with glee at David and Robert both appearing in the same series with one writing: "Stella cast!!! I shall be watching this for sure!" and another saying: "Now that's a line-up. Tennant, Jones, and Carlyle—an ensemble that feels like it belongs in the same breath as De Niro, Pacino, and Pesci. The new series will weave together two real life stories, that of the work of journalist Nick Davies who uncovered the News of the World phone hacking scandal and the unsolved murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan. So what do you need to know about the series? Here's your full rundown. The Hack was first announced back in January 2025 and is a seven-part drama series written by Adolescence's Jack Thorne. The official synopsis of the show is as follows: "Set between 2002 and 2012, the drama deftly interweaves two real life stories, the work of investigative journalist Nick Davies, played by David Tennant, who uncovered evidence of phone hacking at the News of the World, and running parallel, the story of the investigation into the unsolved murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan, led by former Met Police Detective Chief Superintendent Dave Cook, played by Robert Carlyle." In July 2011, The Guardian claimed journalists at the now defunct newspaper News of the World had hacked into phones for information. The claim and subsequent investigation lead to the closure of the paper. Leading the cast of The Hack is David Tennant as Nick Davies, the investigative journalist at The Guardian who was responsible for uncovering the phone hacking that was going on at the News of The World. Playing his editor-in-chief Alan Rusbridger is Toby Jones, who starred in last year's hit series Mr Bates vs The Post Office. Joining them is Robert Carlyle as former Met Police Detective Chief Superintendent Dave Cook. Cook was working on the investigation into the murder of Daniel Morgan, a private investigator whose death remains unsolved to this day. The investigation into his death will also be explored in the series. Cara Theobold will be playing the role of Amelia Hill, a Guardian journalist who worked alongside Davies to uncover the phone hacking scandal. Also in the cast in yet undisclosed roles are Katherine Kelly, Rose Leslie, Dougray Scott, Eve Myles, Adrian Lester, Lisa McGrillis and many more. So far the exact release date of the new series has not been confirmed, however ITV has said it is "coming soon", which at least means it's likely to come before the end of 2025.

Review: West Edge Opera's ‘David and Jonathan' is a bold, queer revelation
Two young people fall in love. The father, jealous of his son's new love, interferes. Tragedy ensues. It's a standard opera plot, but it's no 'La Traviata.' In West Edge Opera's production of Marc-Antoine Charpentier's 'David and Jonathan,' there's a twist: both lovers are men. The Bay Area company's take on the 1688 opera, which opened Sunday, Aug. 3, at the Oakland Scottish Rite Center, presents a homosexual relationship that is far from 'the love that dare not speak its name' as part of its summer festival. Director Mark Streshinsky staged this biblical love story in open acknowledgement of the physical and emotional intensity between the title characters — David, the slayer of Goliath, and Jonathan, the son of King Saul of Israel. This openly gay vision of Charpentier's Baroque opera makes a radical casting decision. In the original score, Jonathan's part was to be sung by a boy soprano. Most modern productions cast a female soprano as Jonathan. But West Edge's version stars Derek Chester as David and Aaron Sheehan as Jonathan, both buff young men. We might think of the time of Louis XIV as frozen in conventionality, but Charpentier's music is passionate and full of life. The two title characters share their love, their sorrow and finally their grief in moving duets. Their bond is made even more emotional by West Edge's reworking of both vocal lines into tenor range: the lovers share a single expressive language. In Streshinsky's staging, the lovers display their affection passionately. They kiss, make love and pledge their union openly. And yes, because it's a tragedy, Jonathan dies in David's arms. Jealous Saul, powerfully presented by baritone Matthew Worth, forces the two lovers apart. As the biblical account makes clear, the king is deeply disturbed, prone to fits of anger and violence. His self-loathing turns against those he loves and eventually against himself. This fateful triangle of Saul, David and Jonathan plays out during the brutal, long-lasting war of Israel against the Philistines — the historical inhabitants of the anguished land we now call Gaza. The opera makes it achingly clear that such wars are fostered by obsessive and paranoid kings, and have disastrous consequences for all. At the end, when David succeeds Saul as king, the crown means nothing to him as he sobs, cradling his lover's lifeless body. West Edge's production makes the stage come alive, with a constantly moving set and expressive changes of lighting. A quartet of excellent dancers, choreographed by Benjamin Freedman, splendidly physicalized Charpentier's lively ballets. The fine baroque orchestra of strings and flutes was led from the keyboards by Music Director Adam Pearl. Pearl and Streshinsky clarified a number of confusing elements of the libretto, such as adding an opening number replaying David's heroic slaying of Goliath, comically reenacted in Saul's court with the giant as a monstrous puppet, ineffectively flailing his equally monstrous member. Supporting roles included Achis, King of the Philistines, sung with commanding presence by bass-baritone Wilford Kelly; Joabel, a treacherous Philistine, portrayed with swagger by Ben Pattison; Ghost of the prophet Samuel, a sonorous bass role, sung by Richard Mix; and the Witch of Endor, who pulls Samuel from the underworld, portrayed fabulously by mezzo-soprano Laurel Semerdjian in a bat-like costume. West Edge Opera's summer festival continues through Aug. 17, with additional performances of 'David and Jonathan' and two other operas, 'Dolores' (through Aug. 16) and 'Wozzeck' (opening Saturday, Aug. 9).

Pickle This Pickle That Pickle Fest kicks off in Forty Fort
FORTY FORT, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — People puckered up for the Pickle This Pickle That Pickle Fest at the Forty Fort Sports Complex. The event featured plenty of pickle-flavored food and pickle-inspired crafts. With nearly 40 vendors on hand, there was something to relish for pickle lovers of all ages. Celebrating culture at NEPA Latino Fiesta in Scranton 'We had a new, few new pickle vendors this year. A lot of it's the same vendors. We had a new distillery doing pickle shots. They sold out pretty early today,' Pickle This Pickle That Pickle Fest Founder and Organizer Shylo Egenski told 28/22 News. If you missed the fun this year, don't worry.
