Liverpool Are Playing 4D Chess in the Transfer Market

A Different Game: Liverpool's 4D Chess in the Transfer Market
It feels like something's shifted this summer. And no, I'm not talking about the manager, the stadium or even the new kits. I'm talking about the way Liverpool are doing their transfer business. You can call it bold, you can call it calculated, you can even call it 4D chess. But whatever it is, this is not the Liverpool we've been used to.
This is Liverpool doing things like the biggest club in England. No whispers. No panic. Just cold, clinical confidence.
And I love it.
Punching at the Pinnacle
Let's get straight into the meat of it. The links to Alexander Isak and Rodrygo aren't your typical Liverpool rumours. These are premium players, in premium positions, with premium price tags. Liverpool have already shattered the British transfer record to bring in Florian Wirtz. Now there's credible movement on Isak and Rodrygo.
This isn't throwing money around like we've seen elsewhere in the league. It's not Chelsea's chaos or United's blind roulette. This is about Liverpool identifying elite talents and striking with intent, not hope.
What stands out most is that we've apparently opened dialogue with Newcastle over Isak and made it clear we're willing to play in the £120 million bracket. That number floored me. That's not a test-the-water type bid. That's a statement.

Roma keen on Jonathan Rowe

Roma continues to work on the transfer market to find new offensive reinforcements. After the arrivals of El Aynaoui, Ferguson, Wesley, and the imminent arrival of Ghilardi, the Giallorossi club shows no signs of slowing down. Gian Piero Gasperini has reportedly requested a further alternative in attack, specifically a second striker to partner Paulo Dybala, Matías Soulé, and Tommaso Baldanzi. According to the latest name on Frederic Massara's list is Jonathan Rowe, a young attacking winger born in 2003 currently playing for Marseille. The Englishman, coming off a season with three goals and three assists in 28 Ligue 1 appearances, has also made an impact at international level, contributing a goal to England's victory at the Under-21 European Championship. Marseille values Rowe at around €20 million. Premier League clubs such as Leeds and Bournemouth are also interested in the left-back, as well as Atalanta, who could become interested if Lookman's transfer were to materialize.

England arrive at Downing Street to celebrate European Championship success

England have headed to Downing Street for a celebratory reception after returning home to cheering crowds following their European Women's Championship triumph. The Lionesses successfully defended their European crown with a 3-1 penalty shootout victory over Spain in the tournament's showpiece in Basel on Sunday. Alessia Russo cancelled out the opener from Arsenal team-mate Mariona Caldentey and after drawing 1-1 following extra time, an entertaining final ultimately boiled down to penalties. Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton made two brilliant saves in the shootout before Chloe Kelly fired home from the spot to ensure England retained their European title. The Lionesses left their team hotel in Zurich on Monday morning with skipper Leah Williamson carefully escorting the trophy to the bus, and after returning to England the team headed for Westminster and a reception hosted by Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and sports minister Stephanie Peacock. The team arrived just before 7pm, with Number 10 decorated for the occasion with St George's flags draped over windows and bunting along the railings. After almost a month of competition in Switzerland, the team's aeroplane branded with the word 'home' touched down at Southend Airport on Monday afternoon. In a post on X, the team shared a photo of the Euros trophy draped in an England flag on a seat on the plane. Holding the trophy, Williamson was first to step off the plane alongside head coach Sarina Wiegman. Outside of the airport, crowds were lined up to welcome the team and the trophy back home. A homecoming open-top bus parade follows in central London on Tuesday, where there will be a procession along The Mall and the celebration will finish with a staged ceremony at the Queen Victoria Memorial in front of Buckingham Palace. A trip to the Palace or Windsor Castle may be on the cards for the winning squad as it is understood possible plans for a reception in the autumn are being explored by royal aides. Defender Jess Carter has not joined her team-mates for the celebrations in London as she has returned to the United States ahead of Gotham FC's NWSL match against the Chicago Stars on Saturday.

$58 Million Álex Baena: A Transformative Addition To Atlético Madrid

Spanish international Baena, pictured here with Atleti president Enrique Cerezo, came in from ... More Villarreal. Atlético Madrid, no stranger to making bold statements in the transfer market, is quietly constructing a competitive ensemble to rival Barcelona and Real Madrid. Its main coup is Álex Baena—the playmaker pinched from Villarreal for €50 million ($58 million) including achievable extras at the start of July. Given the shakeup at Atleti's local nemesis and scene-stealer Real, and the notion that Baena is a familiar name, making the natural step up from one La Liga team to another, his switch may have gone relatively unnoticed outside Spain. In Baena's head, here's a chance to make a significant impact—and keep a live record of achievements on his body—after being given the number 10 jersey. Asked if he will continue the tradition of marking (quite literally) triumphs with a tattoo, the Andalusian said (Spanish) at his official unveiling on Monday, 'I've come to Atlético to win titles, and it's a thing I always do. And I think we're going to tattoo ourselves more than once.' Baena grabbed seven goals and 10 assists in 32 league outings for fifth-placed Villarreal last season. According to FBref, he was a division leader in the number of key passes made with 95 (impressive considering Barcelona's stacked midfield talent) while having the best metric in expected assists, 12.6, essentially indicating that he provided the best opportunities to his teammates. Baena Offers A Glimpse Into The New Atleti The 24-year-old falls somewhere between a creative midfielder and forward, which is pretty convenient for Los Colchoneros. Ten years his senior, the established Atleti superstar who fits the same description is Antoine Griezmann, the glue in coach Diego Simeone's workhorse XI. Despite signing a contract extension until 2027 in June, Atleti must get ready for life after the Frenchman, and Baena—although distinct in style—should ease that transition. Entering season number ten with Atleti, split over two spells, Griezmann is club's all-time leading ... More goalscorer. 'Baena is a super-exciting signing. He is the kind of playmaker Atlético has lacked, from left midfield or elsewhere, for many years,' Jeremy Beren from the That Atleti podcast tells me. 'For the fans, it means a lot that he wanted to come here in the face of other offers; he is the all-too-rare opportunity Atleti sometimes has to acquire an elite player who wasn't on Barça or Real's radar.' Last season, Atlético was in the league title race before falling out of contention in the home stretch. Elsewhere, it exited the Champions League in heartbreaking fashion against Real at the quarterfinal stage and lost to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey semifinals. Since then, it's also brought in Juan Musso, David Hancko, Clement Lenglet, Matteo Ruggeri, Marc Pubill, Johnny Cardoso, and Thiago Almada. Reinildo, Rodrigo Riquelme, Saúl Ñíguez, Rodrigo De Paul, and Ángel Correa have left the Metropolitano Stadium this summer. At the top of the field, where Baena does the most damage, Atleti fans will be pleased to hear that Baena is already forging a good relationship with striker Julián Alvarez. If the side is to pose a threat near the La Liga summit in 2024/25, the likelihood is that Baena—a product of Villarreal's academy—will play an active role in proceedings.
