From the Kerry archives, August 4, 2000: near miss in plane crash & Listowel brings in paid parking
Duo in flight panic thought they would die Two young Kerry men who were on the Futura Air holiday flight involved in a near-miss crash scare at the weekend thought their final hour had come. Gareth Dillon, from Tralee, told The Kerryman on Tuesday, "The shock is only kicking in today. I just got off the flight and am only coming to terms with it." Mr Dillon, originally from The Kerries, was so stunned by the incident that he told The Kerryman in a clearly shaking voice that he couldn't talk about it. His friend and fellow passenger, Bartley O'Connor of Knocknagoshel, said he thought his time had come when the Futura Air flight plunged 200 feet after take-off. 'I thought we were finished," Mr O'Connor said this week. "I have a lot of experience in flying, but this was probably the worst incident I have experienced," he added. The two friends were returning from the Canaries on a Futura Air flight with Panorama Holidays. They had spent the week with two friends from Co Leitrim. "There were a number of bangs and loud noises on the right-hand side of the plane. Immediately, the plane went from side to side, the wings dipped, and we nose-dived 200 feet," Mr O'Connor said. The incident occurred only days after the Paris Concorde disaster. Mr O'Connor said everyone on board the Futura Air craft had the same thought. "Most people were staring into space and praying. There was a look of terror on everybody's face, wondering if they were ever going to see land again,' he said.' The initial shock was followed by another. Cabin crew announced that the plane would not be able to complete an emergency landing because it was carrying too much fuel, risking an explosion. Passengers had to endure another hour and a half of flight before the plane could land safely, and all the while, the damaged engine was sparking and flaming. "I felt the plane was going to explode. We were told we would not be able to complete the trip because of what had happened, but because of the fuel we couldn't land immediately,'' Mr O'Connor said. Bartley O'Connor and Gareth Dillon tried to pass the time by playing mental games, but this only worked for a while. When the plane finally landed, the passengers started clapping and cheering, and a party atmosphere took over. However, the passengers were then subjected to a four-hour wait in the airport with no medical assistance, before a Panorama representative tried to persuade them to fly home on the same aeroplane. They finally returned on another Futura Air flight. Listowel pays for parking privilege The wet conditions on Tuesday afternoon didn't deter the shoppers from the usual hustle and bustle around the streets of Listowel. Still, it wasn't the inclement conditions that were most prominent in their minds. The town's parking situation was on everybody's lips. Tuesday, August 1, will long be remembered as the day that pay parking was initiated in the town for the first time ever. The decision was not taken without some difficulty, as town councillors voted with considerable reluctance in November to implement pay parking in a town which previously boasted that it was the only urban centre in the county to permit free parking. The overall consensus among shoppers, businessmen, women, and residents was that the new measure should, if at all possible, be avoided. Some people feel that the new measure will serve to divert business away from the town, while residents in the town are aggrieved that they have to pay to park outside their homes. As traffic warden Michael Houlihan worked his way through the town, he told The Kerryman that, as it was the first day of the new scheme, he was being lenient with car owners. "I have a tough reputation, but I am being lenient today. Some people are using the discs today, and others are not. But we are giving a few days' grace," he said, adding that he had not issued a single ticket on the first day of the new dispensation. Bernie McAuliffe, who is currently living in County Kildare, is originally from Colbert Street in Listowel. She said that the situation is going to pose problems for her family. "It is going to be desperate. We will have to get up at 9.30am, move the car, and keep moving it every two hours. We don't know what to do as we can't leave the car outside the house. It is madness,' she said. "An option is to park at the Charles Street car park, but there is no security there. We want supervised car parks, as it will be very awkward otherwise. Everybody will end up parking in places you do not have to pay for," she said. Tadhg Moriarty, of Charles Street, Listowel, said he envisages some teething problems, but added that there shouldn't be too many problems as long as business in the town is not affected. "Once they make provisions for locals, so that this doesn't interfere with businesses in the town, there should be no problems,' he said. "There should be a review of the whole thing after 6-12 months. Currently, there is a lot of traffic coming into the town on the Tralee side in the evenings,' he added. Jim McQuinn, Assistant Manager of Kerry Phone Centre, does not feel that the new measure is going to benefit the businesses in the town in the long run. "I don't think it is a good idea. Listowel relies on passing trade through the town. The revenue earned from pay parking would not justify the amount of business that will be lost over this. Listowel is too small for it,' he said. Declan Boyle, from Asdee, said that although similar initiatives appear to be in place in most other towns, the question of where the money from the scheme will go must be addressed. "It's everywhere; pay parking. It's inevitable, but I would like to know if we are going to see any of the money. What are they going to use it for?' he asked. Although Roseanne Lucey from Trien Road, Kilmorna, was unaware that the new initiative had got underway, she said it would be awkward for shoppers to get to the town. "It'll be awkward, especially when I have the kids with me. I have gotten parking tickets so many times. It will be stricter now, and that is not necessary. We'd only be parked for a short stage,' she said. Ann O'Brien from Listowel had little to complain about in this landmark scheme for the town. "I think it will free up a lot of space for people who are shopping or visiting,' she said. When asked if she thinks the fare will increase from 40p to £1, she said that it will probably not happen before locals are consulted. She said that if shoppers who visit the town have any problem with the new measure, then they can avail of late-night shopping and park free of charge in the process.
