Saudi, Indonesia ink US$27b in deals spanning clean energy, petrochemicals

CAIRO, July 3 — Saudi Arabia and Indonesia signed several deals and memorandums of understanding worth around US$27 billion (RM114 billion) between private sector institutions in fields including clean energy and petrochemicals, Saudi state news agency SPA reported on Wednesday. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto visited the Gulf kingdom on Wednesday and met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The two sides also agreed to bolster cooperation in the supply of crude oil and its derivatives, improve supply chains and their sustainability in the energy field and strengthen cooperation in mineral resources, the Saudi state news agency said. Trade between the two countries amounted to around US$31.5 billion in the last five years, according to SPA. Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power signed initial agreements to explore investment opportunities into renewable energy projects with sovereign wealth fund Danantara Indonesia and state energy firm Pertamina, according to a statement from Danantara. The companies are expected to explore potential investments with up to US$10 billion worth of project funding, Danantara added. — Reuters

Asian stocks mixed as traders shrug at US-Vietnam trade deal

HONG KONG: Stocks struggled in Asia on Thursday (July 3) as investors gave a lukewarm reception to the US-Vietnam trade deal, while the dollar eased ahead of key US jobs data that could impact Federal Reserve interest rates plans. Attention was also on Washington as Republicans struggled to push Donald Trump's tax-slashing budget bill through the House of Representatives amid warnings it will inflate an already ballooning national debt. While the Vietnam agreement provided hope that other governments can reach agreements with Washington, dealers were cautious as it emerged that the country must still pay tolls of as much as 40 per cent for certain exports. With less than a week left until the US president's July 9 deadline to hammer out pacts to avoid his "reciprocal" levies, just three countries have done so - stoking worries his "Liberation Day" measures will kick in and spark fresh market turmoil. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote: "It is my Great Honor to announce that I have just made a Trade Deal with the Socialist Republic of Vietnam after speaking with To Lam, the Highly Respected General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam." He said that under the "Great Deal of Cooperation", imports of Vietnamese goods will face a 20 per cent US tariff, while goods that pass through Vietnam to circumvent steeper trade barriers - so-called "transshipping" - will see a 40 per cent tariff. The news means Hanoi will avoid paying the 46 per cent tolls initially applied on the April 2 tariff blitz, though the cost of goods going into America will still surge. Hanoi traders were unimpressed, with the Vietnamese capital's stock market down in early trade. A third record close in four days for Wall Street's S&P 500 and Nasdaq also did little to lift buying sentiment elsewhere in Asia, with Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tokyo, Sydney and Wellington all falling. Singapore, Seoul, Taipei, Manila and Jakarta edged up. Trump said this week he will not push back his deadline to make more deals though he and some of his officials have said a number were in the pipeline. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said Thursday his administration was doing its "utmost" to secure an agreement. However, he warned that "it's certainly not easy, that much is clear. And to be honest, I can't say with confidence that we'll be able to wrap everything up" by the deadline. The dollar continued to struggle as traders boosted rate cut bets after data showed the private sector unexpectedly shed jobs last month for the first time since March 2023, suggesting the labour market was slackening. The reading came a day before the much-anticipated non-farm payrolls report that is used by the Fed to guide policy. Traders widely expect the bank to cut rates twice this year but there is growing speculation that it could make three, with one possibly at the July meeting. "Payrolls is the focus (Thursday), where consensus is for a 110,000 payrolls gain and a slight lift in the unemployment rate to 4.3 per cent," said National Australia Bank's Taylor Nugent. "It would take more than that to dent (policy board) members' comfort (that) the labour market is resilient enough to wait beyond July for more clarity on inflation and the outlook." Meanwhile, US Treasury yields rose amid fresh worries in the bond market over Trump's "Big, Beautiful Bill" that cuts taxes as well as spending on programmes such as Medicaid. Independent analysis suggests it will add US$3 trillion to the already-colossal US debt mountain, which observers warn could deal a fresh blow to the world's top economy. - AFP

Asian shares tick up ahead of US payrolls test; Trump's tax bill in focus

SYDNEY: Asian shares edged higher on Thursday as investors braced for a key US jobs report that may justify imminent rate cuts by the Federal Reserve and waited on the passage of a massive US tax and spending bill in Congress. Wall Street climbed overnight to close at new record highs after President Donald Trump announced that the US has struck a trade deal with Vietnam, including a 20 per cent tariff on exports to the US. That fuelled hopes that more deals will be forthcoming, with negotiations underway for a trade agreement with India. The MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan advanced 0.20 per cent to hover just below a near four-year top. Japan's Nikkei was flat. China's blue chips edged up 0.20 per cent, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell 0.60 per cent after data showed China's services activity expanded at the slowest pace in nine months in June. Both Nasdaq futures and S&P 500 futures were little changed in Asia. Investors were waiting for Trump's massive tax and spending bill to pass the House of Representatives for possible final approval. The bill is expected to add US$3.3 trillion to the national debt, slash taxes and reduce social safety net programmes. The main risk event for markets will be the US payrolls figures due later in the day. Analysts are forecasting a rise of 110,000 in June with the jobless rate ticking up to 4.30 per cent, but the stakes are high after a private sector payrolls report surprised with the first fall in over two years. The resilience of the labour market is a major reason the majority of Federal Reserve members say they can afford to hold off on cutting rates until they can gauge the real impact of tariffs on inflation. "These labour market indicators warn of the risk that the unemployment rate could spike to 4.40 per cent, the highest since October 2021," said Tony Sycamore, analyst at IG. "This would quickly increase the probability of a July Fed rate cut to around 70 per cent." Futures imply just a 25 per cent probability for a rate cut this month from the Fed, which has not eased policy at all this year, drawing the ire of Trump who reiterated his call on Wednesday for Chair Jerome Powell to resign. The Treasuries market was tense before the data as a weak jobs report would send yields sharply lower. Ten-year Treasury bond yield slipped 2 basis points to 4.27 per cent on Thursday, while two-year yields eased 2 basis points to 3.77 per cent. The dollar is again under pressure, having caught some relief overnight. Concerns about the Fed's independence in the wake of Trump's criticism have driven the dollar to its lowest against its peers in over three years. Trump, who said rates should be cut to 1 per cent from the current Fed benchmark rate of 4.25 to 4.50 per cent, has repeatedly railed against Powell for not lowering borrowing costs since his return to the White House in January. The euro inched up 0.10 per cent to US$1.1807, just a whisker away from a nearly four-year top of US$1.1829 hit on Tuesday, while sterling added 0.10 per cent, recovering a steep 0.80 per cent fall overnight, as fears about the future of its finance minister Rachel Reeves eased. Investor anxiety over UK finances after the British government's reversal on welfare reforms caused gilt yields to jump overnight, up nearly 23 basis points at one point — the most since October 2022. In commodities markets, oil prices were slightly lower after jumping 3 per cent overnight as Iran suspended cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog. US crude futures slipped 0.40 per cent to US$67.20 a barrel while Brent was at US$68.84 per barrel, also 0.40 per cent lower on the day.
