‘There is deer on the runway': Pilot of Alaska Airlines flight issued warning moments before hit

A video showing an Alaska Airlines plane striking multiple deer on a runway has gone viral on social media, prompting an investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The incident occurred at Kodiak Benny Benson State Airport, where a Boeing 737 aircraft hit more than two deer while landing. The clip shared on X captures the moment the plane begins to descend. As it moves along the runway, it runs into several deer wandering across the tarmac. The video ends with the aircraft coming to a complete stop. An X user who posted the footage wrote, 'An Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 hit a few deer while landing at Kodiak Airport.' According to a report by CNN, which cited the pilots had spotted the animals before touching down and alerted air traffic control. 'There is deer on the runway,' the pilot said after receiving landing clearance. The control tower responded, 'Roger, do you have an idea of where they are at currently?' The pilot then replied, 'The intersection.' A spokesperson for Kodiak Benny Benson State Airport told CNN that the plane's main landing gear was damaged in the incident and would need repairs in Kodiak. As a result, all passenger flights to and from the airport were cancelled for the rest of the day. Affected travellers were rebooked on alternative flights. CNN reported that animal collisions involving aircraft are fairly frequent across the United States. Last year alone, over 22,000 such incidents were recorded — including five at Kodiak Airport. While bird strikes are the most common, 2024 has also seen planes hit an alligator in Florida, a mongoose in Hawaii, and a badger in North Dakota. Despite the collision, all passengers and crew aboard the Alaska Airlines flight were unharmed, and no injuries were reported.

Southwest Airlines flight headed to Las Vegas takes dramatic plunge in response to nearby aircraft

LAS VEGAS: A Southwest Airline jet heading to Las Vegas from Southern California took a dramatic plunge shortly after takeoff Friday in response to an alert about a nearby plane, sending some passengers flying out of their seats and injuring two flight attendants. The plane suddenly jolted shortly after takeover then felt like it was falling, said Stef Zamorano, who was flying to Las Vegas with her husband to celebrate his birthday. In front of her, Zamorano saw a woman who wasn't wearing her seat belt shoot up and out of her seat, her long hair flying in a tangled mess. The man seated next to her was clutching her arm, and she said the woman across the aisle was panicking. "She was pretty much verbalizing how we all felt, saying, 'I want to get off this plane. I want to be on the ground,' " Zamorano told The Associated Press. Data from the flight tracking site FlightAware shows it dropped roughly 300 feet (91.44 meters) in 36 seconds. The Federal Aviation Administration said the flight, Southwest 1496, was responding to an onboard alert about another aircraft in its vicinity. The FAA is investigating. Southwest said the crew responded to two alerts that required the pilot to climb then descend. The flight departed from Hollywood Burbank Airport just before noon.

Russian plane with 49 aboard crashes after disappearing from radar over country's Far East

MOSCOW: A passenger plane carrying nearly 50 people crashed in a remote spot in Russia's far eastern region of Amur on Thursday, with no immediate signs of survivors, authorities said. The aircraft, a twin-propeller Antonov-24 operated by Angara Airlines, was headed to the town of Tynda from the city of Blagoveshchensk when it disappeared from radar at around 1:00 pm local time (0400 GMT). A rescue helicopter later spotted the burning fuselage of the plane on a forested mountain slope about 16 kilometres (10 miles) from Tynda. Videos published by Russian investigators showed what appeared to be columns of smoke billowing from the wreckage of the plane in a dense, forested area. Rescuers in the helicopter saw no evidence of survivors, local rescuers said, as the Amur region's civil defence agency said it was dispatching a ground team to the scene. "At the moment, 25 people and five units of equipment have been dispatched, and four aircraft with crews are on standby," it said. The forest terrain has made getting to the site difficult, a rescuer told the state TASS news agency. "The main search operations are being conducted from the air," they said. Angara Airlines, a small regional carrier based in the Russian city of Irkutsk, made no immediate public comment.
