Health ministry, UK health department joint working group discuss digital transformation of healthcare
The delegation from the Ministry of Public Health was led by Assistant Minister of Public Health for Health Affairs Dr Salih Ali Al Marri, while the British side was headed by Deputy Director of Bilateral Relations and Trade at the UK Department of Health and Social Care Fionn Craig.
The meeting aimed to deepen cooperation between the two parties in areas such as antimicrobial resistance, artificial intelligence and data in healthcare, the resilience of medical supply chains, and patient safety and quality of care.
It reviewed several important topics, most notably an overview of the State of Qatar's priorities regarding antimicrobial resistance, the national programme for combating antimicrobial resistance, pharmaceutical security and the strategy for securing antibiotics. It also included an overview of the UK's priorities on antimicrobial resistance, initiatives following the 2024 UN General Assembly Political Declaration on antimicrobial resistance, and establishing an independent scientific committee dedicated to evidence-based action on antimicrobial resistance.
The meeting also discussed the digital transformation of healthcare, including the Qatar Health Information Exchange Platform, workforce development, collaboration with the private sector and outsourcing of digital health and artificial intelligence solutions. In addition, the meeting also addressed the integration of artificial intelligence in healthcare in the UK, the ethics and regulation of AI in healthcare, and the ten-year health plan to transition from paper-based to digital systems in the UK.
Moreover, the meeting reviewed Qatar's approach to supply chain resilience strategies, the implementation of artificial intelligence in healthcare supply chain management, and an overview of the national framework for patient safety, including priority areas, national policies under development, and capacity building for patient safety and risk management. It also included an overview of the Health Services Safety Investigations Body (HSSIB), the International Patient Safety Organizations Network, patient safety investigations, and principles and expertise in human factors in the UK.

The Thai government is moving to tighten rules around the sale of cannabis, just three years after the kingdom decriminalised recreational use of the popular substance. Thailand's Ministry of Public Health on Tuesday night ordered that cannabis use be restricted to medical use only, throwing the estimated $1bn industry into a state of uncertainty. Government spokesperson Jirayu Houngsub said cannabis had created serious social problems for young people, and the industry, which has boomed in recent years, needed to be scaled back. It will need to be published in the official Royal Gazette to come into force, and the government has not indicated when that will happen. Thailand became the first country in Asia to fully decriminalise cannabis in 2022, in a move that has been wildly popular with tourists but less so among more conservative Thais. Thousands of cannabis stores have opened across Thailand in the past three years, although it has remained relatively unregulated despite multiple attempts by the government. The latest move to restrict cannabis use comes amid wider political turmoil in Thailand. Last week the Bhumjaithai Party, previously a champion of decriminalising cannabis, withdrew from the government's ruling coalition due to its mishandling of a border conflict with Cambodia. The Thai Chamber of Commerce previously estimated that the cannabis trade could be worth $1.2bn by 2025, although experts say it has not reached its full potential due to the uncertainty that has plagued regulation around the industry since it was decriminalised.

Health ministry warns against misleading video
DOHA: The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has warned against the circulation of a misleading video in which an individual claims to have discovered a cure for diabetes and urges Qatari citizens to contact him, potentially for fraudulent purposes. The Ministry clarified that the individual in question misrepresented his former role as a trainee assistant in research at a local institution in Qatar in order to lend weight to his claims. His role was limited to interacting with participants in research studies. He is not a qualified diabetes specialist, nor is he licensed to provide medical consultations. The Ministry also noted that he is no longer employed in the State of Qatar. The Ministry further clarified that the licence status of any healthcare practitioner in the country can be verified through the 'Find a Registered Healthcare Practitioner' service. The Ministry said any unlicensed healthcare practices can be reported via email to The Ministry underscored the importance of verifying information and obtaining health advice from official sources.

Princess of Wales pulls out of Royal Ascot
London: The Princess of Wales has pulled out of attending Royal Ascot, a five-day series of horse races in England, as she continues to find the right balance following her treatment for cancer. Kate is said to be disappointed not to join her husband, Prince William, and the British king and queen at the famous sporting and social occasion in Berkshire. The princess has been making a gradual return to public duties since it was announced in January she was in remission from cancer. But it is understood Kate is trying to find the right balance as she fully returns to public-facing engagements that have featured an element of flexibility since her cancer diagnosis. Kate's mother Carole Middleton was at Royal Ascot despite her daughter missing the event and was photographed making her way through the racegoers with her daughter-in-law Alizee Thevenet around the time it was announced the princess would not be attending.
