Glenn McGrath On How To Protect Jasprit Bumrah: 'India Needs Another Group Who...'
Last Updated: Glenn McGrath suggests India give Jasprit Bumrah a long off-season to recover and develop new fast bowlers to ease his burden. Bumrah was released from the BCCI squad. Australian great Glenn McGrath feels that India need to give Jasprit Bumrah a long off-season to recover and, in the meantime, prepare 'another group of fast-bowlers' who can ease the burden off him. McGrath's comments came a day after Bumrah was released from the BCCI's squad for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. As he and every other important stakeholder in the team had declared before the series, the pacer only featured in three Tests. After seeing his body breakdown in Sydney on the tour of Australia in January, India didn't want to test his limits, but it left them without their ace in the deciding game at the Oval. 'You want him to be playing as many games as possible because he is a match-winner. But it is a tough one because he has a unique bowling style," McGrath was quoted as saying by The Times of India. 'He puts more stress on his body than other fast bowlers. In Australia, whenever Bumrah played, the matches were tight. But unfortunately, when he played back-to-back matches, he had injury concerns." When asked whether India and Shubman Gill could have been more careful with the usage of his overs, McGrath had a pragmatic view, saying that this alone won't solve much. 'A lot of it depends on the captain and hierarchy and more so him (Bumrah), what he feels he can do. You want your best bowler bowling (for long) and him wanting to bowl as well. If Bumrah bowls in short spells, the batting team can just get through those three-four overs. India need another group of fast bowlers coming through to ensure Bumrah does not have to bowl long spells. India need other bowlers who can equally carry the workload." 'It is important for a fast bowler to have an off-season. If you just keep playing year in, year out, things (injuries) will happen. That is the nature of the beast. Good bowling action, good genetics and good work off the field are needed to get strong. There may be a freak who can bowl all day every day, but 99.9% of the fast bowlers need an off-season," McGrath said. India have managed to hold their own without Bumrah, letting England have only a slender, 23-run lead and then ending the day at 75/2. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Jasprit Bumrah To Skip Asia Cup? 'If India Plays Final, No Way He Can Play Vs West Indies'
Last Updated: There's just a two-day gap between the end of Asia Cup 2025 and start of India-West Indies 1st Test in Ahmedabad. Is Jasprit Bumrah set to miss another major Interational tournament? Given the schedule and his workload management, India could very well be without their pace spearhead for the next month's Asia Cup tournament that starts from September 9 in the UAE. Bumrah was on Friday released from India's Test squad for the ongoing five-match series against England being played for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The 31-year-old played three Tests and despite India needing a win in the final Test, currently underway at The Oval, he wasn't picked in the playing XI for a fourth game with the team management sticking to their original workload plan that required him to play in three of the five matches. Bumrah To Prioritise Tests? The Asia Cup will be played from September 9 to 28 in T20 format. The tournament was to be held in India but given the diplomatic tensions with Pakistan, UAE has been picked as a neutral venue. India are slated to host West Indies for a two-Test series that starts from October 2. Now, should India qualify for the Asia Cup final, it will leave Bumrah with just two days to rest and gear up for the West Indies series – a highly unlikely scenario given his fitness history. 'It will be a tricky call, but Bumrah loves Test cricket and there are World Test Championship points at stake. As far as T20 is concerned, he can play the series against New Zealand in January, which will be a dress rehearsal for the T20 World Cup," a BCCI source was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. 'If Bumrah plays Asia Cup and suppose India plays the final, no way can he play against West Indies at Ahmedabad. Obviously, the question arises, do you need Bumrah against West Indies or he plays Asia Cup after a month's break and plays the two Tests against South Africa. That call, Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir will have to take," the source added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
