586 vehicles, 27 driving licences face suspension over unpaid challans
The action may lead to suspension for one to six months, or full cancellation in serious cases, such as repeated offences or involvement in criminal activity. Assistant regional transport officer (administration), Rajesh Chaturvedi, said the list sent by the police includes only vehicle registration numbers and not the names of owners.
These vehicles have more than five pending e-challans, which were issued through the Integrated Police Management System (IPMS) using CCTV footage.
'Many drivers do not know about these challans, as they are not always informed unless they check the e-challan mobile app or receive a notice,' he said. The transport department now plans to send notices to the vehicle owners. They will be asked to pay their pending challans at the RTO. If they do not comply, their vehicle registrations or driving licences could be suspended or cancelled.
Traffic inspector Amit Kumar added that the first list has already been sent, and a second list is almost ready. According to the RTO records, Prayagraj currently has 11,84,226 driving licences on record — including 9,59,382 permanent licences and 2,24,844 endorsed and learner licences.

A motor vehicle inspector was arrested in Odisha's Boudh district on Monday (August 4, 2025) after 44 plots, 1 kg of gold and other valuables were allegedly found in his possession, officials said. Of the 44 plots in the possession of Hansdah and his family, 43 were located in and around Baripada town, and one was located on the outskirts of Balasore town. He joined the government service in 1991, and his present salary is ₹1.08 lakh per month, officials said.

Youth drowns in Choral forest
Mhow: A youth who went to visit Roshiya Baba's Dargah situated in the Choral forest area drowned in the water body near the dargah and died on Sunday afternoon. Simrol police station in charge, Amit Kumar, told TOI that Mohsin Khan, son of Rehmat Khan, 22, a resident of Jalla Colony in Indore, and his five other friends went to visit the Roshiya Baba Dargah on Sunday. Before entering the Dargah, all five of them planned to take a bath in the pond. While all of them were bathing, Mohsin slipped into deep water and started drowning. When his friends realised his situation, they shouted for help, but he was not found in time. Upon receiving information about the incident, police and SDRF teams reached the location, and the body was fished out from the water. It was then taken to MY Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will be carried out in the morning. 17 bikes seized, Rs 75k fine for using modified silencers
BARGARH: Bargarh Town police and its traffic wing launched a crackdown on motorcycles fitted with unauthorised modified silencers which have been causing high level of noise pollution across the town. Police seized 17 Royal Enfield motorcycles for using modified silencers that emit noise beyond permissible limits. A total fine of Rs 75,000 was collected from the violators under provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. 'From the RTO records, we identified that 25 Royal Enfield motorcycles are registered in Bargarh town. We traced those suspected of using modified silencers and seized 17 of them during the drive. Each vehicle owner has been fined Rs 5,000 for noise pollution and illegal modifications,' said SDPO P B Tripathy. Owners have been instructed to reinstall original stock silencers to get their vehicles released from custody. While the hunt is on for the remaining identified motorcycles, the next phase of the drive will focus on similar bikes registered outside the district but being used within Bargarh, he added. Local residents, particularly near Court Road and Hospital square expressed relief over the action. Tribikram Mahananda, a local resident, said, 'Every evening, bikers pass through this stretch with deafening noise. My shop is near the district headquarters hospital where elderly patients flinch at sudden bike roars. Children studying at home get disturbed, and senior citizens complain of panic and stress.' Police appealed to the public to refrain from using unauthorised silencer pipes, warning that such modifications violate traffic rules and threaten public health. Officials said similar enforcement drives will continue to keep such violators in check.
