Karnataka State Commission for Women urges CM to form SIT in Dharmasthala case

Hindustan Times15-07-2025
Karnataka State Commission for Women chairperson Nagalakshmi Chowdhury on Monday urged chief minister Siddaramaiah to form a special investigation team (SIT) to probe allegations of mass graves, disappearances, and crimes against women and students in Dharmasthala over the past two decades. a daily-wage labourer has claimed that he personally buried more than 100 bodies in and around Dharmasthala (File photo)
This comes in the wake of a court deposition by a daily-wage labourer, who under tight security on Friday claimed that he had personally buried more than 100 bodies in and around Dharmasthala. His identity has been withheld due to security concerns.
In a letter, Chowdhury said: 'In connection with the above subject and statement, a person has recorded a statement in court claiming to have buried hundreds of bodies in the Dharmasthala region.'
She noted that the Women's Commission had taken serious note of both the court statement and media reports aired on July 12, which mentioned the discovery of a human skull and included comments from the family of a missing medical student.
'The Commission has taken the media report and the statement of the man who claimed to have buried bodies very seriously,' she wrote.
'These suggest a disturbing pattern of severe abuse, murders, rapes, unnatural deaths, and disappearances involving several women and students over more than 20 years.'
She also flagged reports from families who had faced inaction from law enforcement. 'Many families have alleged that police did not respond properly when they went to file cases about their missing or deceased children,' the letter said.
Given the gravity of the allegations, Chowdhury called for an independent and high-level probe. 'I therefore request the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the leadership of senior police officers to conduct a comprehensive and impartial investigation into cases of missing women and students, unnatural deaths, murders, and sexual assaults that have occurred in the Dharmasthala region over the last 20 years,' she wrote.
The state government has not yet issued a response to the demand.
The daily-wage labourer had first approached Dharmasthala police with a complaint on July 4. He was represented by advocates Ojaswi Gowda and Sachin S Deshpande. On July 10, he was granted protection under the Witness Protection Scheme, 2018. He appeared before the principal civil judge and judicial magistrate in Belthangady around 4.40 pm on Friday, wearing a mask and escorted by his legal team.
Inside the courtroom, he reportedly reaffirmed his claims and gave details about the locations where he said the bodies — mostly of women and young girls — had been buried.
His statement lasted nearly 80 minutes and was recorded in full. He was later taken into police custody for further legal procedures.
His advocates confirmed the witness protection granted to him. 'A communication to this effect was sent to us on the evening of July 10 by the authorities concerned. The complainant conveys his gratitude to the district judiciary, Dakshina Kannada, the police authorities in Dakshina Kannada and the Government of Karnataka for acting expeditiously on the request for witness protection,' the advocates said.

Supreme Court verdict on ED is significant: DK Suresh

Bengaluru: Bamul President and former MP DK Suresh has welcomed the Supreme Court's recent judgment on the Enforcement Directorate (ED), calling it a significant step in the context of the agency's alleged political misuse. Speaking to the media at his Sadashivanagar residence on Tuesday, Suresh stated, 'Yesterday's Supreme Court verdict is very important. This is not the first time the apex court has pulled up the ED for its overreach and conduct. For the past two years, the court has been reprimanding the agency. It is evident that the ED is being used as a political tool by the ruling government at the Centre.' He further cited that even the Madras High Court had criticized ED officials last week in a related case, and that opposition leaders are being targeted in politically motivated raids. 'The Centre must abandon this politics of vengeance and shift focus toward development, youth empowerment, and resolving national issues,' he urged. When asked whether political leaders are being harmed by the ED's actions, Suresh responded, 'In politics, one must be prepared to face everything. But using institutions like ED as a weapon to silence opposition leaders is a dangerous trend. The Supreme Court's verdict has restored some faith in justice.' Referring to D.K. Shivakumar's statement about the cases against him being politically driven, Suresh said, 'Despite the ED cases against us being closed, we continue to face harassment. Letters are being sent to CBI and the Income Tax Department. At every stage, attempts are being made to trap us in new cases. This is not an investigation in search of truth or justice, but rather a calculated effort to target political rivals.' 'SIT formation should not be politicized' Responding to questions about the recent formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) in connection with the Dharmasthala incident, Suresh said that the state has a duty to address public concerns and maintain the sanctity of religious places like Dharmasthala, which is revered by many. 'Some are wrongly portraying this as an anti-Hindu move. It is, in fact, a step taken in the interest of Hindus. If any injustice has occurred, it must be corrected, regardless of who is involved,' he said. Suresh emphasized that no one is being targeted or shielded and that the temple is not the property of any single family. 'If Lord Manjunatha is insulted, it is as though we all are insulted. This must be addressed with the seriousness it deserves, without turning it into a political mudslinging match,' he stated. On BBMP restructuring and urbanisation When asked about the BJP's opposition to the proposal to divide BBMP into five municipal corporations, Suresh said, 'There will always be debates on such matters, but the government will consider all opinions before proceeding.'He also highlighted the need for better civic infrastructure in fast-urbanizing rural areas. 'Many places in my constituency still fall under the Panchayat system despite being functionally urban. Citizens demand proper facilities, but Panchayats are unable to deliver them. Bengaluru has over 1.4 crore people; one commissioner alone cannot manage all affairs. That's why the government is planning administrative reforms to improve governance,' he explained. On CM's & DyCM visit to Delhi Addressing the criticism over Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's Delhi visit, Suresh said, 'Why shouldn't they go? They are meeting party leaders to discuss organizational matters and also holding talks with Union Ministers about pending funds and developmental projects for the state. This is routine and nothing unusual.' When asked about Shivakumar's name not being mentioned at the Mysuru 'Sadhana Samavesha', Suresh dismissed the issue, saying, 'The Chief Minister has already clarified this. There's no point in dragging it further.'

Custodial death: Madras HC orders Rs 25 lakh more to victim's family

MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the state government to pay an additional interim compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the family members of B Ajithkumar (29), a temple guard who was allegedly beaten to death by police personnel in Sivaganga last month. This is in addition to the Rs 7.5 lakh that has already been paid by the government to the family. The court further said the direction would not be a bar for the victim's family to seek appropriate compensation before the competent court. During hearing, counsels for the petitioners submitted that the key witnesses in the case have not yet been provided protection as prescribed under the Witness Protection Scheme, 2018. Recording this, the judges directed the Principal District Judge of Sivaganga to dispose of the witness protection applications, submitted by the above witnesses under the scheme, within seven working days. The counsels further requested the court to direct payment of interim compensation to the injured victims, but it was opposed by the Additional Advocate General (AAG) M Ajmal Khan who said that such a decision should be made only after the CBI files its final report. Concurring with the AAG's opinion, the judges refused to issue such a direction at this stage, but said the victims can approach the authorities concerned for compensation. The AAG also informed the court that the direction to transfer the connected case (relating to the theft of jewels) to the CBI has been complied with. The matter was adjourned to August 20 for further hearing.

Judicial custody of 11 accused extended till AugUST 1

Vijayawada: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) special court here on Tuesday extended the judicial remand of 11 accused in the Andhra Pradesh liquor scam case up to August 1. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) officials produced the accused before the court upon completion of their previous remand period. The accused include Kessireddy Rajashekar Reddy, former IT adviser to former chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy; K Dhanunjaya Reddy, secretary in the CMO; Krishna Mohan Reddy, officer on special duty (OSD) to then CM; director of Bharati Cements Balaji Govindappa; former MLA Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy; Rajashekar Reddy's personal assistant Dilip Kumar, Chanikya and Sajjala Sridhar Reddy. Nine accused were brought from the district jail in Vijayawada, while the remaining two were brought from Guntur jail. After the court extended their custody, they were sent back to jail. The court extended judicial custody till August 1 so that all 12 accused arrested in the case so far can be produced together on completion of their remand term. YSRCP MP P V Midhun Reddy was arrested in the case on July 19. The court had sent him to judicial custody till August 1. He is currently lodged in Rajahmundry Central Jail. The alleged scam had occurred during YSRCP rule between 2019 and 2024. After TDP-led NDA came to power last year, a case was registered at CID Police Station in Mangalagiri under sections 409, 420, 120 (B), r/w 34 and 37 of IPC and section 7, 7A, 8, 12, 13 (1), (b), 13 (2) of Prevention of Corruption Act 1988. The Crime Investigation Department (CID) initially conducted an investigation following a complaint by an official of the Excise Department. Later, the government constituted SIT, headed by NTR District Commissioner of Police SV Rajashekhar Babu, to probe the case. The SIT found large-scale irregularities and fund misappropriation in the liquor policy implemented during 2019-24. Investigators reportedly uncovered a kickback network involving nearly Rs 3,500 crore siphoned off over five years. There are allegations that the YSRCP leaders encouraged a new liquor policy, floated new brands, and received kickbacks from the distillery companies, causing huge losses to the government.
