Abu Dhabi is building the world's first net-zero mosque
Set to rise in Sustainable City Yas Island, this futuristic house of worship will be the first in the Middle East and North Africa to use hydrogen-based steel rebar, supplied by EMSTEEL Group.
That's a big deal because steel is one of construction's biggest carbon offenders – but hydrogen-based steel can slash those emissions by up to 95 percent. That means fewer emissions and more blessings for the planet.
With space for more than 850 worshippers across 1,595 square metres, the mosque is aiming for LEED Zero Carbon certification – another first for the capital.
Everything from the clean energy powering it to the materials used has been chosen with sustainability in mind. From concrete and cooling to prayer carpets and lighting, this is a space where design and devotion meet cutting-edge decarbonisation.
The announcement was made during Make It In The Emirates 2025 – a heavyweight gathering of the UAE's industrial and manufacturing minds – where Aldar and EMSTEEL unveiled their game-changing partnership. It's part of a broader push to green the country's construction sector and recirculate value into the UAE economy through the National In-Country Value (ICV) programme.
The mosque is part of Aldar's bigger promise to hit net zero across its operations by 2050. With green construction, clean energy, circular economy practices and now hydrogen steel on the cards, it looks like they're well on their way to reaching real estate nirvana.
Salwa Al Maflahi, executive director of sustainability and community outreach at Aldar, said: 'The low emissions hydrogen-based rebar is more than a material innovation – it's a catalyst for reshaping our industry.
'As we transition to low-carbon construction, green steel enables us to reduce embodied carbon at scale, without compromising structural integrity or design ambition. Our partnership with EMSTEEL marks a bold step forward in accelerating the decarbonisation of our supply chain and delivering on our net zero ambitions. This is a game changer for sustainable real estate development.'
Michael Rion, chief commercial officer at Emirates Steel, part of EMSTEEL Group, said: 'At EMSTEEL, we are proud to support the region's transition to sustainable construction by supplying low-emissions hydrogen-based rebar for this landmark project. collaboration with Aldar represents a significant advancement in the use of green steel and underscores our commitment to innovation, environmental responsibility, and the UAE's industrial sustainability agenda.
'Through such partnerships, we aim to decarbonize the value chain of the construction industry and drive long-term impact across the built environment. This project sets a precedent for future developments, with both Aldar and EMSTEEL exploring the broader adoption of green steel across residential, commercial, and public infrastructure projects in the UAE and beyond.'

Aldar Deepens Logistics Reach with AED 530 Million Almarkaz Deal
Aldar Investment has sealed the acquisition of 17 high‑quality warehousing and light industrial units from Waha Capital for AED 530 million, immediately expanding its net leasable area by 182,500 sq m at Almarkaz Industrial Park in Al Dhafra, Abu Dhabi. The assets, now near full occupancy, welcome a mix of international, regional and government-related tenants, reinforcing Aldar's logistics footprint across the UAE. The Almarkaz site spans six million sq m and operates under special economic zone status, offering premium infrastructure and modular facility design that enables seamless scalability. With this purchase, Aldar's logistics portfolio surpasses 600,000 sq m of operational and under-development space, encompassing holdings in Abu Dhabi's Business Hub, Dubai's 7 Central, and forthcoming logistics parks at Dubai South and Jebel Ali with DP World. Jassem Salah Busaibe, CEO of Aldar Investment, explained the deal aligns closely with the firm's strategic direction to enhance and diversify recurring revenue streams. He noted demand for 'well-located premium logistics and industrial space' across Abu Dhabi and Dubai continues to intensify, underpinning Aldar's capital allocation into high-quality warehousing with 'strong fundamentals and growth potential'. ADVERTISEMENT For Waha Capital, the divestment marks a pivotal phase in extracting value from over a decade of development at Almarkaz. Mohamed Hussain Al Nowais, Managing Director at Waha Capital, praised the transformation of the property from a green‑field plot to a strategic logistics hub, describing the sale as a validation of the platform's scalability and the group's long‑term, value‑creation objectives. Market observers attribute this flurry of logistics investment to several drivers. E‑commerce growth, burgeoning regional trade flows, and population expansion are converging, creating heightened demand for grade‑A logistics assets. The Almarkaz facilities, offering modular layouts with variable unit sizes and heights, are well suited to support this evolving tenant landscape. Analysts also view Aldar's move as reinforcing its status as a leading logistics landlord in the UAE, Ramsay Consultants senior director Sarah Al‑Zafiri remarked: 'By adding scale, occupancy and diversification, Aldar is consolidating its edge in a competitive sector increasingly driven by global supply chain dynamics.' The company's pipeline of projects in Jebel Ali and Dubai South—particularly the joint venture with DP World—demonstrates a long‑term commitment to expand capacity in line with regional logistics demand. The strategic purchase comes against the backdrop of Abu Dhabi's broader economic agenda, driving diversification away from hydrocarbons towards industrial, logistics and business infrastructure development. It aligns with the Emirate's infrastructure milestone ambitions, including that of Almarkaz itself, which grew under government-backed initiatives and Waha Capital's vision over the past decade. Financially, the AED 530 million consideration—equivalent to US$144 million—reflects growing investor appetite for stable, income-generating real estate underpinned by long‑term leases and resilient tenant profiles. The acquisition further strengthens Aldar's balance sheet diversification, reinforcing revenue stability as the logistics unit contributes increasingly meaningful recurring income. Looking ahead, both Aldar and Waha Capital signalled openness to future collaborations within Almarkaz. Their aligned interests, combined with the availability of undeveloped land and infrastructure, could unlock new logistic and industrial developments. With Almarkaz now integrated into Aldar's ecosystem, and development momentum building in key zones like Dubai South, Jebel Ali and across Abu Dhabi, the move positions the Emirates to benefit from an expanding logistics network. As strategic partnerships and phased developments roll out, the sector appears primed to support national economic diversification goals alongside private-sector returns.

Abu Dhabi agency receives 2nd Carbon Neutrality Certification
The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has received its second Carbon Neutrality Certification from Applus+, a verification agency accredited by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This achievement means EAD has become the first regulatory body in the UAE to receive this certification twice, further solidifying its commitment to combating climate change and promoting environmental sustainability in Abu Dhabi. Commenting on the milestone, Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, said: 'Receiving the Carbon Neutrality Certificate for the second time underscores EAD's deep commitment to building a sustainable future for Abu Dhabi. By offsetting our carbon emissions for the 2020–2022 period, we are not only setting a benchmark for government entities, but also inspiring our peers in government, and challenging the private sector to embed sustainable practices into their core operations. We believe this milestone will accelerate our collective journey towards net-zero emissions, solidifying Abu Dhabi's role as a regional leader in environmental stewardship.' Any greenhouse gas emissions generated by EAD were assessed by GE3S and verified by Applus+. The Agency's comprehensive approach to achieving carbon neutrality includes identifying emission sources such as energy consumption in buildings, the use of chilled water, waste generation, fuel use in vehicles and generators, as well as the implementation of targeted emission reduction measures. The Agency is focused on significantly reducing its energy consumption and environmental footprint through the adoption of eco-friendly technologies and sustainable practices. As part of this commitment, EAD is transitioning its vehicle fleet to hybrid power, thereby reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Additionally, all existing lighting systems have been upgraded to energy-efficient LED technology and lighting sensors, and smart water have been installed to optimise resource use and minimise waste. Environmentally friendly air-conditioning systems have also been adopted across all EAD facilities. In a major step forward, EAD is integrating solar panels into all new projects, harnessing renewable energy to power its operations. This is complemented by sustainable design principles aligned with LEED Zero Carbon standards – further contributing to reduced energy consumption and lower carbon emissions. This achievement serves as an inspirational milestone for broader climate efforts, encouraging other organisations to integrate targeted carbon management strategies into their operations. The Agency continues to lead the way toward net-zero emissions while maintaining its leadership in environmental stewardship. Recently, the EAD has wrapped up its latest aerial survey, covering more than 8000 square kilometres of marine habitat. These efforts reflect the agency's dedication to safeguarding marine species and ecosystems, further reinforcing Abu Dhabi's status as a regional leader in marine biodiversity conservation and environmental stewardship. EAD is the only entity in the Middle East conducting long-term, systematic monitoring of marine species through regular surveys. Since 2004, it has been carrying out comprehensive aerial assessments – an initiative aligned with the emirate's vision that strengthens its environmental database to support conservation strategies and ensure the sustainable management of marine resources. Ahmed Al Hashmi, Executive Director of the Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity Sector at EAD, said, 'The findings of this survey reflect our ongoing efforts and commitment to leveraging advanced technology to reinforce Abu Dhabi's leadership in environmental conservation. More than a 20 percent increase in the dugong population and a rise of over 30 percent in sea turtle numbers and stands as clear evidence of the success of our science-based strategy. These achievements are a source of pride and motivation as we continue our mission to protect our natural heritage.' The aerial survey was conducted by a dedicated team of six researchers, who covered a distance of 1,630km over a total of 26 hours to gather vital data. WAM
