Punjab: Takht-appointed committee invites Sukhbir to join joint election process

Hindustan Times18-07-2025
A committee formed by the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs, has invited Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal to take part in the election of office-bearers for the party, to be elected within a month. The rebel faction of the SAD plans to elect 500 delegates, nearly the same number as the delegates of the SAD led by Sukhbir Singh Badal . (HT File)
The rebel faction of the SAD plans to elect 500 delegates, nearly the same number as the delegates of the SAD led by Sukhbir.
'We are in the process of finalising the list of members. After that we will announce the delegates, three to four from all 117 assembly constituencies in the state,' said Manpreet Singh Ayali, a leader of the rebel faction and one of the five members in the committee constituted by the Akal Takht on December 2 last year, to enrol members for the SAD and hold election of office-bearers.
The Akal Takht's December 2, 2024, decree not only awarded tankhah (religious punishment) to Sukhbir and other SAD leaders for mistakes committed by the party and its government from 2007-2017 on the complaint of rebel party leaders, but also directed the SAD working committee to accept his resignation as SAD president, besides constituting a seven-member committee to initiate a recruitment drive and elect new office-bearers in six months.
However, the Sukhbir faction initiated a recruitment drive under a SAD working committee, citing legalities. It was termed as violation of the decree. Despite criticism, the Sukhbir faction continued the drive. The panel faced a setback after its coordinator Harjinder Singh Dhami and member Kirpal Singh Badungar quit.
'We have already enrolled 12 lakh members, with an additional 14 lakh pending verification. After this, we will proceed with electing the delegates, who will then vote to elect the party's office-bearers, including the president,' Ayali said.
The committee has given Sukhbir a one-month window to respond to their invitation and take part in the joint election process involving delegates from both the Akal Takht committee and the SAD's recent reorganisation.
The Akal Takht-appointed committee has also expanded its membership campaign beyond Punjab, reaching out to Haryana, Chandigarh and even international communities. 'The response has been overwhelmingly positive, both domestically and abroad,' Ayali noted. 'We are currently in the process of counting the total number of enrollments.'
The committee's key members include Gurpartap Singh Wadala, Iqbal Singh Jhundan, Bibi Satwant Kaur and Santa Singh Umaidpur.
While the Akal Takht committee has extended the invitation, SAD leaders have chosen not to comment until they receive a formal communication. 'We have reorganised the party, and Sukhbir Singh Badal was unanimously re-elected as president in April 2023,' a senior SAD leader said. 'There is no basis for a re-election at this point.'
Sukhbir's journey as the SAD president has been marked by ups and downs. He was first elected to the position in 2008 and was re-elected for a fourth term in April 2023, making him the longest-serving and youngest president in the party's 104-year history.
However, Sukhbir resigned from his post in November 2023 following a ruling by the Akal Takht, which declared him guilty of religious misconduct due to alleged actions of the party and its government between 2007 and 2017. His resignation was officially accepted in January 2024.
Sukhbir survived an assassination attempt in December 2023 by a former Khalistani terrorist while performing sewa at Amritsar's Golden Temple. When Sukhbir was out of the post of the party president, Balwinder Singh Bhundar was the working president, who now is number 2 in the party as secretary general.

14 years on, land acquired in Mansa village remains unused

Bathinda: Amid a debate over Punjab's contentious land pooling scheme, intended to gather 65,000 acres for urban development, 750 acres of land acquired 14 years ago in Mansa district for setting up a power plant is lying vacant and undeveloped. The land, situated in Gobindpura village within the Budhlada sub-division, was forcibly acquired in March 2011 by the erstwhile SAD-BJP govt for a 1,320 MW power plant to be built by Peona Power, a subsidiary of India Bulls. The acquisition was met with fierce resistance from villagers, leading to nearly two years of protests marked by violent clashes. On Aug 2, 2011, farmer Surjit Singh from Hamidi village lost his life, and numerous others sustained injuries during confrontations with police. Today, residents are not only grappling with the unfulfilled promise of development but also the nuisance of wild boars and neelgai emanating from the overgrown, unused land, damaging crops and disrupting daily life. "Not even a single brick has been laid in these 14 years after the state govt acquired 750 acres of land against the wishes of landowners," said Gurlal Singh Gobindpura, a local resident whose family was at the forefront of the original protests. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Sekeloa: Unsold Sofas Prices May Surprise You (Prices May Surprise You) Sofas | Search Ads Search Now Undo "It has turned into a jungle from where wild animals cause trouble to villagers and damage crops," he added. While the govt initially offered Rs 23.68 lakh per acre, agitation by farmer organisations like BKU (Ekta Ugrahan) ultimately compelled an increase in compensation to Rs 25.68 lakh per acre. Despite the enhanced payout, the promised development remains elusive. Mansa deputy commissioner Kulwant Singh acknowledged the lack of progress. He confirmed that developmental activity has been stalled because certain critical stretches of land could not be acquired, preventing the consolidation of the entire tract. Singh also confirmed villagers' complaints about wild animals due to the prolonged disuse of the land. "The industrial house now has plans to set up a solar plant on the acquired land, and a project report is being prepared," the DC said. MSID:: 122951602 413 |

Majithia Seeks Live Streaming of Trial, Not In-Camera But Media Proceedings; Former Punjab Minister in Judicial Custody Says Public Has Right to Know Case Details

Mohali: Former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has petitioned a local court to livestream his ongoing trial in a disproportionate assets case, calling for open proceedings in the interest of transparency and public accountability. Majithia, currently in judicial custody at Nabha jail, filed the application through his counsel, Damandeep Singh Sobti, on Monday. The petition challenges the in-camera nature of the hearings, which bars public and media access currently. "We seek livestreaming of the trial to expose the political vendetta behind these charges," said advocate Sobti. "This case is linked neither to the NDPS Act nor any illegal assets. The public deserves to see the truth." The request from the ex-minister comes amid mounting criticism over restricted courtroom access. Even journalists and individuals connected to the case have been denied entry reportedly, with police citing the in-camera format. A separate application from a web reporter for permission to attend hearings remains pending. The former minister has filed three applications currently before the court: the plea for public access to the trial, a bail application scheduled for hearing on July 30, and a request for a change of barracks citing security concerns. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pune: Unsold Furniture Liquidation 2024 (Prices May Surprise You) Unsold Furniture | Search Ads Learn More Undo In his petition for separate confinement, Majithia — who holds Z-plus security status — has alleged credible life threats and argued that housing him with the general prison population poses a severe risk. The court has directed the additional director general of police (ADGP), jails, to respond regarding Majithia's classification under the "orange category" of the prison manual. Punjab's vigilance bureau had arrested Majithia on June 30 from his Amritsar house. He was remanded to 12 days in police custody initially before being sent to judicial custody when no further remand was sought. The upcoming hearings are likely to determine the course of his bail application and the court's stance on livestreaming the proceedings — a move that, if approved, could mark a legal first for high-profile political trials in Punjab.
