2025 Arizona Cardinals training camp roster preview: CB Star Thomas V
The Arizona Cardinals report to training camp on July 22 and begin the process of preparing for the regular season, forming the roster and determining starting jobs and roles on the team.
Leading up to the start of camp, we will take a look at every player on the offseason roster, their background, their contract, their play in 2024, questions they face and their roster outlook.
Next up is cornerback Star Thomas V.
Star Thomas V background, 2024 season
From Alabama-Birmingham, Thomas entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Lions in 2023. Waived in the cutdown to 53 players, he was claimed by the Cardinals and has consistently improved in his two seasons with the team.
In 2024, he played all 17 games with 15 starts and played 820 (75 percent) defensive snaps while also playing 75 (17 percent) special-teams snaps. Thomas had 47 tackles (31 solo, one for loss), while adding six passes defensed and a forced fumble.
Star Thomas V 2025 contract details, cap hit
Thomas is in the final season of the three-year contract he signed as a rookie. His 2025 base salary and salary-cap charge is $1.03 million with no money guaranteed. He is scheduled to be a restricted free agent in 2026.
2025 questions, roster outlook
Even with Sean Murphy-Bunting out for the season, the competition will be intense in the cornerback room this summer. Thomas can surely hold his own, but the overall quality is strong with Garrett Williams, Max Melton, rookies Will Johnson and Denzel Burke plus 2024 third-round pick Elijah Jones, who missed his rookie season because of an ankle injury, and Kei'Trel Clark. Thomas is rarely talked about, but he displays admirable consistency.

Veteran with 21 contracts, just 16 games looks to continue improbable career with Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys used to have depth issues on the interior, but no more. Several years dedicated to improving the talent pool has gotten the club to the point they can actually withstand the retirement of a future Hall of Famer. Zack Martin won't be manning the right guard spot for the first time in over a decade, but the Cowboys quickly moved to ensure they had starting quality veteran depth, and then used their first-round pick on the role as well. The result? For the veterans who formerly were the backup depth, a longer road to making the 2025 roster. That group includes Dakoda Shepley, a journeyman who has been with the club for three years after spending time in several other NFL cities. Rundown Position: Offensive Guard Age: 31 (Week 1 age) Height: 6-foot-5 Weight: 290 pounds Hometown: Windsor, Canada High School: Holy Names College: British Columbia (Film Study Video) Draft: 2018 UDFA Acquired: 2022 Practice Squad signing Contract: Two-year contract (2025), $2.3 million 2025 Base Salary: $1.1 million Career Earnings: $1.7 million (per Over The Cap) Profile Each time a player is released back to a practice squad, they have to sign a new contract. Shepley has signed 21 NFL contracts before the age of 31. That's five more contracts than games played. Originally a UDFA of the Jets, he's spent time with San Francisco (1 game), Seattle (8 games) and in between two different stretches with the Cowboys (7 games), Indianapolis. Shepley hasn't yet started a game in his career, and faces competition from Brock Hoffman, a teammate since 2022 who has started more games (9) than Shepley has appeared in. Also part of the challenge are the newly signed Robert Jones, Hakeem Adejini and Saahdiq Charles. All of those players have more starting experience than Hoffman, which crystalizes just how difficult it will be for Shepley to make the 2025 squad out of training camp. Arizona Cardinals to face 6 top-10 pass rushers in 2025
The Cardinals do not have any edge rushers in ESPN's top 10 (no surprise) but will face many of them as opponents. As NFL training camp approaches for most NFL teams (the Los Angeles Chargers reported on Saturday), sites continue to publish lists, rankings and predictions. ESPN has been revealing player rankings at different positions, but with a twist. They are based on the votes of coaches, scouts and executives. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler revealed the rankings for the edge rushers — the top 10 and four honorable mentions. While the Cardinals upgraded the position group this offseason with Josh Sweat, it is no surprise that no Cardinals players even get honorable mention. Sweat is good but he has never been mentioned as a top-10 EDGE. The Cardinals do, though, face a few of them. NFL edge rusher rankings: Which do the Cardinals face in 2025? The Cardinals will face six of the top 10, playing two in one game, while another two players are in the NFC West and will see the Cardinals twice. The Cardinals have good tackles in Paris Johnson and Jonah Williams, but they will be tested in 2025. In fact, they will have top pass rushers in four of their final five games of the season.
