'Step in': Police union leader wants Braun, state leaders to intervene in Indy crime-fighting

Indianapolis Star15 hours ago
The head of the Indianapolis police union is calling for Indiana Gov. Mike Braun and state legislators to "step in" to address violence in Indianapolis after nearly a dozen people were killed during the first two weekends of July.
The statement from Rick Snyder, president of the Indianapolis Fraternal Order of Police, comes as city officials consider an earlier youth curfew to deter late-night violence like the July 5 mass shooting that killed two teens and injured five other people.
Those victims were among 30 people shot and five killed from Friday to Sunday over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, the city's most violent weekend of 2025. Violence continued into this past weekend, with at least six people killed from July 11-14, according to IndyStar's homicide tracker.
Snyder called a proposed Marion County curfew that would be two hours earlier a "shallow and shortsighted approach." To bolster the earlier curfew, Indianapolis City-County Council members are discussing the possibility of fines and mandatory parenting classes for parents and guardians whose children repeatedly violate curfew.
"It is apparent Indianapolis leaders are stuck in the very corner they constructed with misguided policies and agendas — as now we see nothing but paralysis by politics," Snyder said in his July 14 statement. "It's time for the Indiana Legislature and Governor to step in. Call us, we have solutions."
Snyder did not immediately respond to IndyStar's follow-up request to learn more about the specific policies he would propose to state leaders.

Despite the recent high-profile incidents of violence, an IndyStar analysis found that significantly fewer killings occurred in Indianapolis in the first six months of 2025 than in previous years. City leaders have reiterated that downtown is Indianapolis' safest neighborhood.
Snyder also cast doubt on Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears, saying he's "more focused on what crimes he won't prosecute."
A spokesperson for the prosecutor's office rejected that characterization, saying that Mears' office typically files more than 18,000 criminal cases a year and prosecutes 20-25% of cases that reach trial in Indiana annually.
Neither Braun, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department nor Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett immediately returned requests for comment sent Monday afternoon.

Biggie's Son Accused Of Helping Diddy Orchestrate Sexual Assault

Source: Jeffrey Mayer / Getty A new lawsuit filed over the Fourth of July holiday accuses Diddy of sexual assault and implicates CJ Wallace, son of the late rap legend Notorious B.I.G., as a willing participant in the setup. The plaintiff, identified only as John Doe, claims he was deceived into visiting a Revolt TV location in 2020 after being promised business opportunities. Transportation was allegedly arranged by Combs Corporations. Upon arrival, Doe says he was ambushed by a group of men, including Wallace, and forced into a separate room where Diddy was waiting. There, the lawsuit alleges Diddy attempted to force oral sex on Doe while shouting threats related to Doe's involvement with Bad Boy Records. The complaint paints Wallace as a key player in the alleged deception and assault, accusing him of acting as a 'henchman' in the scheme. John Doe is seeking damages from all named defendants. According to a recently filed lawsuit, John Doe alleges that during a 2020 incident involving Sean 'Diddy' Combs, members of the Combs Corporations (CC) team took a photograph of him during an alleged sexual assault. He claims the photo was intended to serve as humiliating evidence, possibly for blackmail or intimidation purposes. After managing to escape the room where the assault occurred, Doe says he returned to the vehicle that had brought him to the Revolt TV location. There, he encountered CJ Wallace, son of the late rapper Notorious B.I.G., along with entrepreneur Willie Mack and several other individuals. Doe claims that CJ, Mack, and the others had previously presented themselves as allies, promising him new business opportunities to make amends for his deteriorating relationship with Diddy. However, he now believes those promises were part of an elaborate setup designed to lure him into a vulnerable situation, which ultimately led to his alleged assault. The complaint describes the entire scheme as a calculated act of deception and betrayal by individuals he thought he could trust. As a result, Doe is pursuing legal action and seeking damages from all named defendants, including CJ Wallace, Mack, and others involved in the alleged conspiracy. Jasmine Crockett claims GOP would rather ‘bury their constituents' than fight climate change

Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, accused Republicans on Friday of wanting to 'bury their constituents' after the deadly Texas floods by rolling back ways to combat climate change. She specifically called out the Trump administration and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem for what she claimed was a delayed response to the flash flooding that devastated parts of central Texas over the Fourth of July weekend. She went on to blame the Republican Party for voting on the 'big, ugly bill' to effectively begin 'clawing back' on ways to help combat climate change and prevent similar disasters. 'The reality is that we are going to continue to face emergencies, especially since as we just got done with the big, ugly bill, they are clawing back those things that would have hopefully started to cool this planet down, because they don't believe in science,' Crockett said on MSNBC's 'The Weeknight.' 'The least that they could do is believe in helping American people. Unfortunately, we continue to see Republicans decide that they want to bury their constituents instead of actually doing everything that they can to make sure that they live amazing and full lives.' More than 120 people were killed in the flash flooding with dozens reported missing. Democratic Rep. Follow The Post's coverage on the deadly Texas flooding In a statement to Fox News Digital last week, White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson called it 'shameful and disgusting' to see Democrats politicizing the tragedy and insisted accusations that the NWS was understaffed had been 'debunked by meteorologists, experts, and other public reporting.' 'I agree,' Crockett responded. 'I don't think that is a glitch, but that's actually part of the design.'

Dave Roberts avoids controversy on why All-Star Game is back in Atlanta

ATLANTA — As the baseball world descends on Truist Park for the 2025 All-Star festivities celebrating the Atlanta Braves organization, there are still questions as to why Georgia was awarded the Midsummer Classic four years after it was revoked in response to the state's controversial voting laws. During a news conference on July 14 revealing the starting lineups for MLB's jewel event, a reporter asked National League manager Dave Roberts – who supported the league's decision in 2021 – about the game being back in Atlanta even though the laws "haven't changed." Sports media personality Pat McAfee was the event's MC and seemed taken aback by the inquiry, doing his best to shield Roberts and others on stage from the pointed question. "I believe the question was a political question about laws that are on the books," McAfee said. "I don't know if any of us are experts or the ones that should be getting asked about that." The reporter cited Roberts' own words from a 2021 MLB Network AAPI special for the need to be "relentless with our voices." Roberts followed up: "I think Pat answered it perfectly and honestly, I appreciate the question, I appreciate your thoughts. ... I do feel that everyone has the right to voice thoughts, but right now, I really choose to just focus on the players in the game and I'm excited to be here. ... For me, to be able to manage these guys, I'm honored. So I don't want to get into the policy, but thank you." Commissioner Rob Manfred has been similarly avoidant explaining the decision to give the game to Georgia again. 'I've said it before, we wanted to bring an All-Star Game back to Atlanta,' Manfred said at the 2023 owners' meetings in Arlington, Texas. 'I made a decision in 2021 to move the event and I understand, believe me, that people had then and probably still have different views as to the merits of that decision. 'What's most important is that the Atlanta Braves are a great organization. Truist Park and The Battery are gems in terms of the facilities, and Atlanta and Georgia have been great markets for us for a very, very long time." Dave Roberts was once an advocate Roberts, who was also set to manage that 2021 game, was extremely vocal in his support of MLB pulling the festivities at the time – a decision that came days after then-President Joe Biden said he was in favor of moving the game. "For the commissioner to kind of do his due diligence in baseball, outside of baseball, players, front office, and ultimately make a decision to remove the All-Star Game and the draft out of the state of Georgia, I support," Roberts said in 2021. He added: 'It's very impactful, because I think in a world now where people want and need to be heard – in this particular case, people of color – for Major League Baseball to listen and do something about it and be proactive, I think it sets a tone from Major League Baseball to the players, and we have to be in it together." Despite his past advocacy, the longtime Dodgers skipper has faced criticism in recent months for his silence on social issues. Roberts went on the team's April visit to Donald Trump in the White House, celebrating the 2024 World Series championship. The manager gushed about taking an Oval Office photo in front of the Declaration of Independence, a "picture I'm going to cherish for a long time." For what it's worth, Trump had previously ripped Roberts' bullpen management during the Dodgers' 2018 World Series. When ICE raids began in Los Angeles in June sparking massive protests, fans and local leaders were calling on the Dodgers to stand with the community and denounce the Trump administration's tactics. But Roberts didn't have much to say when the Dodgers returned from a road trip to a city in turmoil. 'I know that when you're having to bring people in and, you know, deport people and just kind of all the unrest, it's certainly unsettling for everyone," Roberts said, adding that he doesn't "know enough" and "can't speak intelligently on (the situation)."
