Sardaar Ji 3 Box Office: Big overseas opening, Breaks record in Pakistan BUT...

Pink Villa5 hours ago

Sardaar Ji 3 delivered a stellar opening overseas, raking in USD 2.10 million (Rs. 18 crore) approx during its three-day weekend. The threequel, starring Diljit Dosanjh, scored the second biggest international debut ever for a Punjabi film, trailing only behind his own Jatt & Juliet 3.
The film features a Pakistani actress, Hania Aamir, due to which it had to let go of release in India. While this casting choice has sparked backlash within India, it has amplified the film's appeal in Pakistan and the Pakistani diaspora abroad. The film grossed PKR 12.75 crore (USD 450K) in Pakistan from just 45 locations, setting a new record for the 3-day gross by an Indian film in the country, surpassing Sultan (PKR 11.10 crore).
Performance in the two largest markets for Punjabi films, Canada and Australia, was a bit underwhelming, with weekend numbers landing around half of Jatt and Juliet 3. This shortfall can be attributed to a mix of factors. Muted pre-release marketing for one, likely a strategic move to avoid drawing attention to the casting. The other one being showcasing constraints, especially in Australia, where most prime locations ran at or near capacity. This will lead to spillover business on weekdays, as reflected by strong advances for Monday.
Elsewhere, the United States and the United Kingdom were close to Jatt and Juliet 3, while in the Middle East, the film almost matched the lifetime numbers of Jatt and Juliet. When the actuals come, it could probably be over. Here, it's the Pakistani diaspora which is the major audience for Punjabi films.
The territorial breakdown for Sardaar Ji 3 overseas box office is as follows:
With these opening numbers, a USD 5 million plus lifetime looks assured, depending on how it legs in Pakistan, it could go much higher. Jatt and Juliet 3 is the highest-grossing Punjabi film overseas with USD 7.35 million, which will be tough to beat, but not ruled out yet.
Despite missing the domestic release, overseas will probably see it through, but the loss of the domestic market, not just theatrical but potentially non-theatrical, is a big blow. It's not just a setback for the film but for the Punjabi film industry as a whole, which has been struggling on the domestic front. Sardaar Ji 3 was seen as a potential shot in the arm for the industry… alas.
It doesn't stop here. The other big release of this year was Chal Mera Putt 4, which also features an ensemble of Pakistani artists. It doesn't seem like that film will release this year, at least not in India. Chal Mera Putt was the film which pioneered collaboration between East and West Punjab, a move that vastly expanded the overseas appeal of Punjabi cinema.
In the years since, nearly every major Punjabi release has featured West Punjabi talent. Even during politically tense periods, Punjabi films had continued to find release in Pakistan. Until now, cross-border collaboration was an asset. But if working with Pakistani artists now means sacrificing the Indian market, the industry finds itself at a critical crossroads in making a decision.

Maa Day 4 India Box Office: Kajol starrer adds a mediocre Rs 2.5 crore on first Monday; Crosses Rs 20 crore

Maa, directed by Vishal Furia and starring Kajol, Ronit Roy, Indraneil Sengupta and others, has added Rs 2.50 crore net to its India tally. Clubbed with the Rs 17.50 crore weekend, the 4 day total of the movie stands at Rs 20 crore. This is to be looked at as a good number for a film resting on Kajol 's shoulders, that is competing with bigger films, Sitaare Zameen Par and F1. However, Maa is a film directly linked to an IP as credible as Shaitaan, and in that regard, these numbers are not good enough. The Day Wise India Net Collections Of Maa Are As Under Maa Looks To End Week 1 With Rs 25 Crore Net In India; Will Face Stiff Competition Next Week Maa may see a slight uptick in collections on discount Tuesday and then end its week in the Rs 25 crore net range. Week 2's competition shall be fierce again, with Metro... In Dino and Jurassic World: Rebirth flooding the marketplace. Despite Maa catering to a very different demographic than the other movies, it sure will lose a substantial amount of its top performing screens. The collections of Maa in week 2 will help figure out its theatrical verdict. Internationally, Maa has barely managed USD 450-500k so far and a lifetime total of USD 1 million will be a luxury given the stiff competition right in front of it. Maa Is A Pricey Film, But The Costs Are Managed Maa is a pricey film. The film's budget shall still be recovered easily because the non-theatrical rights of the movie have been sold at premium prices, since it is linked to the world of Shaitaan. The global theatrical share of over Rs 15 crore should add to its revenues and ensure it is safe monetarily, even in the worst case scenario.

Sitaare Zameen Par Box Office 2nd Monday: Aamir Khan led dramedy adds Rs 3.50 crore to its India tally on day 11; Glides towards Rs 150 crore mark

RS Prasanna's Sitaare Zameen Par, starring Aamir Khan, Genelia Deshmukh and others, has added Rs 3.5-3.75 crore net at the India box office on its second Monday. Clubbing it to the Rs 120 crore total till 2nd Sunday, Sitaare Zameen Par now stands at Rs 123.50-123.75 crore net. The under 50 percent drop from 2nd Friday indicates a reasonable hold for a movie catering to the weekend crowds. The 2nd week for Sitaare Zameen Par should end with roughly Rs 133 crore net on the board. The Day Wise Net India Collections Of Sitaare Zameen Par Are As Under Particulars India Net Collection Week 1 Rs 87.50 crore 2nd Friday Rs 6.50 crore 2nd Saturday Rs 12.25 crore 2nd Sunday Rs 13.75 crore 2nd Monday Rs 3.65 crore Total Rs 123.65 crore net in 11 days Sitaare Zameen Par Has Shown Strong Legs At The Box Office After Opening Low Sitaare Zameen Par will look to end with a 16-17x opening day multipler in India, a luxury for most movies. The multiplier would have been lesser had the film opened like an Aamir Khan film actually opens at the box office. That said, the legs for the film have remained strong despite new found competition in F1 and Maa this week. The fact that it is the most preferred Indian movie for the second consecutive week speaks volumes. Next week, it will find two other new competitors in the form of Metro... In Dino and Jurassic World: Rebirth. Both movies cater to the same demographic and thus, the business is likely to be more affected than the previous week. Sitaare Zameen Par Looks To End The First Phase Of International Release In The Vicinity Of USD 8 Million Internationally, Sitaare Zameen Par crossed USD 6 million and it looks to end in the vicinity of USD 8-8.25 million. For a film that looked to struggle for a USD 2 million weekend, it is a result the makers would happily take. However, it must not be ignored that the film is led be Aamir Khan, who has had an impeccable track record internationally. In that regard, the film should have done better. There is hope for the movie to blow up when it releases in non-traditional international markets like Japan and China. It is still not clear if the dramedy will release in the specified markets at this point in time. Sitaare Zameen Par In Theatres Sitaare Zameen Par plays in theatres now. Naseeruddin Shah Backs Diljit Dosanjh Amid Backlash Over Pakistani Actress Hania Aamir Collaboration

New Delhi: Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah came in support of singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh amid the ongoing controversy against him for collaborating with Pakistani artist Hania Aamir in his film 'Sardaar Ji 3'. Amid the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, Diljit's recent collaboration with Pakistani artist Hania Aamir is facing massive backlash from social media, celebrities and the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE). However, amid all this, Naseeruddin Shah has now expressed his support for Diljit, clarifying that the singer wasn't responsible for the film's casting, and expressed his disapproval of restricting personal interactions between India and Pakistan. He wrote, "I STAND FIRMLY WITH DILJIT. The dirty tricks deptt of Jumla Party has been awaiting a chance to attack him. They think they've got it at last. He was not responsible for the casting of the film, the director was. But no one knows who he is, whereas Diljit is known the world over, and he agreed to the cast because his mind is not poisoned. What these goons want is to put an end to personal interaction between the people of India and Pakistan." He further expressed love for his "close friends and relatives" who reside in Pakistan. He wrote, "I have close relatives and some dear friends there and no one can stop me from meeting them or sending them love whenever i feel like it. And my response to those who will say, "Go to Pakistan", is "GO TO KAILASA" FWICE has officially boycotted Dosanjh for his collaboration with Pakistani actress Aamir, stating that the singer-actor's association with the Pakistani artists has allegedly "disrespected" the "Indian sentiments," especially following the terror attack at Pahalgam on April 22. "It is important to bring to your notice that the said film (Border 2) features actor Diljit Dosanjh, who has been officially boycotted by FWICE owing to his involvement with individuals and content that have deeply disrespected Indian sentiments, especially by associating with Pakistani artists known for their anti-lndia views, and participating in projects filmed in sensitive border locations like Pahalgam immediately following terror incidents targeting our armed forces," the letter read. Earlier, through a social media post, the makers of Border 2 announced that the film has entered its third schedule at the National Defence Academy in Pune. With this in the background, the film union body has requested Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh to "withdraw" any permission granted to the 'Border 2' makers for filming in its premises. "The NDA, being a national symbol of military training and sacrifice, must not be used as a backdrop for a film involving an actor who is currently under public and professional boycott due to acts that undermine the spirit of national unity and hurt the sentiments of our defence community." The letter further read, "ln this context, we strongly urge your good offices to withdra* qny permission granted for the shooting of the said film at the NDA property in Pune, and to initiate necessary action to ensure that the integrity of sensitive defence installations is not compromised or associated with individuals facing legitimate public outrage." FWICE has also issued a "noon-cooperative directive" to singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh after his collaboration with Hania Aamir in 'Sardaar Ji 3'.The film union body has demanded an unconditional apology from the actor for allegedly hurting the "national sentiments" and disregarding the "sacrifices" of the Indian soldiers by his actions. After the massive backlash from the film fraternity, FWICE and social media, the makers of Sardaar Ji 3 have announced that they will not release their movie in India. Meanwhile, 'Border 2' is the upcoming sequel to the 1997 blockbuster 'Border' and has a powerhouse production team, including Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, JP Dutta, and Nidhi Dutta. The film is being directed by Anurag Singh.
