Talking to reporters outside the Parliament House, the minister highlighted that this was the first time an army chief had been invited for lunch with the US president, underscoring the importance of the meeting.
Khawaja Asif emphasised that the discussions on international and regional issues showcased Pakistan's potential in resolving key problems, particularly in the context of Pak-India tensions.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Tuesday that every time US President Donald Trump talks about stopping the Pakistan-India war, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "wounds are reopened". "US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that we stopped the war. When the US president says that we stopped the Pakistan-India war, Modi's wounds are reopened," he said while inaugurating Pak Business Express and newly upgraded passenger facilities at the Lahore Railway Station. During his address, PM Shehbaz also paid tribute to Pakistan's Armed Forces for their resilience in the four-day conflict with India, which he described as "short but highly dangerous." He praised the military's technical superiority, the Air Force's internal innovations, and the Army's use of Al Fatah missiles. "India believed Pakistan could only rely on nuclear deterrence, but conventional warfare supremacy has shattered that myth," he said, reaffirming his commitment to the nation's security. He added that our nuclear assets are guarantors of national security, and the enemy does not dare to look at us with an evil eye. The premier further noted that Pakistan and China were moving forward on new avenues of development, with full coordination underway for the second phase of the CPEC. He emphasized that bilateral ties between the two countries were stronger than ever and continued to serve as a cornerstone for regional growth and cooperation. He added that efforts were also underway to rebuild and strengthen relations with the United States. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the premier expressed delight over the visible transformation of the historic railway station, which he visited after a long interval. "From a warm welcome to well-mannered receptionists, renovated CIP lounges, upgraded passenger waiting rooms, and a fully refurbished train with modern European-style dining and sleeper berths, the change is truly gratifying," he said. Losses decline The prime minister termed the substantial decline in power distribution companies' (Discos) losses as a highly encouraging development and the first of its kind in decades. He chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Energy at the PM House, a Prime Minister's Office news release said. The premier stated that this financial improvement would greatly facilitate the privatization of these power companies. "The reduction in losses marks a turning point for the energy sector, making the road to privatization smoother and more realistic," he remarked. According to a briefing by the Power Division, total losses in power distribution companies have decreased by Rs193 billion, with an overall improvement of Rs242 billion reported. IGC Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday reiterated government's strong commitment to implementing the decisions taken during the Intergovernmental Commission (IGC) and stressed the importance of the timely follow-up to translate the agreements into tangible outcomes. The move came as a high-level delegation from the Kyrgyz Republic led by Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Edil Baisalov called on the premier in the federal capital.

Pak-India conflict: Indian opposition assails Modi for failures

KARACHI: Indian opposition parties on Tuesday assailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for failures in the Pakistan-India four-day conflict earlier this year. As New Delhi launched deadly air strikes on Pakistan in early May over allegations about the Pahalgam attack, which Islamabad denied, PAF downed six Indian jets in its response. After tit-for-tat strikes on each other's airbases, it took American intervention on May 10 for both sides to finally reach a ceasefire. Speaking in the monsoon session of the Indian lower house of parliament, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi said Modi's government 'lacked the political will to fight Pakistan and, because of that, asked the armed forces to attack with their hands tied behind their backs,' according to NDTV. 'If Modi ji has even 50 per cent of the courage that Indira Gandhi had, then clearly say in parliament — Donald Trump is lying,' Gandhi, who is a member of the opposition Congress party, said. He added that the Indian prime minister should state that neither did Trump broker a ceasefire, nor have any of India's planes had been shot down. 'Don't make the army a means to save your image, Modi ji,' Gandhi said. 'The defence minister said the most shocking thing. He said that, at 1:35 am, we called Pakistan and told them we had hit non-military targets and didn't want an escalation,' he added. The Indian leader of the opposition said the Indian defence minister did not understand what he revealed, adding, 'The Director General of Military Operations was told by the government to ask for a ceasefire at 1:35am that very night.' 'You told the Pakistanis exactly what you would do, that you would not hit military targets. You told them directly that you don't have the political will to fight. It's like you are telling them, 'We have slapped you, but we won't slap you further',' Gandhi said. Referring to the Indian Chief of Defence Staff's admission that Indian jets had been shot down by Pakistan, he said, 'CDS Gen Chauhan should have the guts to say that my hands were tied behind my back by my own government.' He added that not a single country has condemned Pakistan. Deputy Leader of the Congress party in the lower house, Gaurav Gogoi, said, 'You think 35 Rafale jets are enough — we don't think so. Even losing one would be a big loss,' according to Indian news outlet the Economic Times. 'The media, which gets its information from you, made it seem like we would wake up in Karachi the next day — but you stopped short,' Gogoi added. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi said, ' Agencies failed. This falls under the home minister — did he resign? Did he even take responsibility?' She also questioned why PM Modi agreed to stop the war. Leader of the Opposition of the Upper House Mallikarjun Kharge questioned if the Indian government had prior notice of the Pahalgam attack, saying, 'PM [Modi] cancelled his schedule three days before the Pahalgam attack — was the govt aware in advance?' Composed of strategic planning and strategic thinking, those trying to manage a crisis must possess required skills to deal with a situation of critical nature in a strategic manner. According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, strategy means, "the science and art of employing the political, economic, psychological, and military forces of a nation or group of nations to afford the maximum support to adopted policies in peace or war." Strategic crisis management is an innovative term and a concept which aims to professionally deal with a dangerous situation skillfully. According to AI overview, "Strategic crisis management is a proactive and integrated approach to preparing for, responding to, and recovering from crises. It involves embedding crisis management into an organization's overall strategic planning process, rather than treating it as an isolated function. This approach focuses on minimizing the impact of crises by anticipating potential threats, developing comprehensive response strategies, and fostering effective communication and collaboration." Crises in Gaza, Ukraine and Iran-Israel as well as the US-Iran relations and the Indo-Pak relations, apart from global economic problems, require strategy for their effective management. Likewise, economic crisis, political schism, water crisis and environmental crisis requires proper management skills with strategic foresight and vision. According to Everbridge, "Crisis management is an organization's process and strategy-based approach for identifying and responding to a critical event. A critical event can be defined as any threat, unanticipated incident, or negative disruption with the potential to impact an organization's people, property, or business processes. Being prepared to respond to and recover from a critical event requires a sophisticated crisis management plan. Prioritizing crisis management also helps organizations mitigate the secondary consequences of critical events. Establishing a plan can help organizations move from a position of reactivity to proactively safeguarding against all the effects a critical event can have on an organization." The concept of strategic crisis management can only be understood and applied in a society which is educated and enlightened and possess analytical skills and critical thinking. When concepts like strategy, crisis and management are rooted in the mindset of people, one can expect a country to deal with issues that pose threat to its survival. For example, economic predicament of Pakistan is a perennial issue. If Pakistan is economically fragile, it will have its impact on politics, governance and foreign policy. Had there been a focus on the part of Pakistan's leadership on seeking excellence in strategic crisis management, the country would have been on the list of 20 top economies of the world. But, the reality on the ground is different because Pakistan's internal and external debt burden is around 250 billion dollars; its foreign exchange reserves held by the central bank amount to 15 billion dollars, exports are 30 billion dollars annually, per capita income is 1,700 dollars, GDP is 373 billion dollars, income from tourism is less than one billion dollars a year and remittances are worth 32 billion dollars annually. Most of the state institutions like PIA and Steel Mill possess a debt of 200 billion rupees. There is a direct link between economy and politics. As long as Pakistan is under political crisis, it will negatively impact its economy, governance, rule of law and foreign policy. The dearth of strategic thinkers and crisis managers in Pakistan mitigates hope to transform it as a vibrant state. In FY2025-26 Pakistan needs to return more than 22 billion dollars of foreign debt which will put enormous pressure on its economy. Strategic crisis management requires the leadership to have the qualities of hard work, intelligence, integrity, commitment, planning, management and vision. This also requires reversing the culture of corruption and nepotism. Strategic crisis management needs to be examined and analysed from three angles. First, the need to have a critical mass emerging from educational institutions having knowledge of strategy and crisis management is essential. Training, advocacy and best practices in a society also contribute towards training people capable of understanding and managing a crisis. Pakistan's dilemma is that its elites are devoid of commitment and professional expertise in strategy and crisis management. Those controlling the instruments of power formulate policies on an ad hoc basis without learning lessons from past mistakes. They also lack the commitment to learn from successful models of crisis decision-making i.e. how leadership in such countries is able to focus on right kind of strategy and apply it to manage a crisis. For instance, G7 that is composed of the world's most industrialised and affluent countries meet every year to assess strategy to meet challenges and crises and conduct brainstorming for effective decision-making in order to maintain their edge in global order. Likewise, every year, there is Munich security dialogue primarily consisting of Western powers to formulate a strategy to deal with threats and manage security crisis. The relative success of G-7 and China in dealing with crises is by pursuing a policy of strategic statesmanship. Second, when in 1971 Pakistan was facing a grave crisis threatening its very survival and its eastern wing was facing a civil war, elites governing power were oblivious of the situation and their strategy lacked foresight, statesmanship and vision. When the country was being dismembered, its rulers behaved in an irresponsible manner. Had a proper strategy been pursued by the Martial Law regime of General Yahya Khan and West Pakistan political parties by summoning the National Assembly in Dhaka on March 3, 1971 and a military operation had not been launched to deal with the political crisis, the country would have been saved. The 1977 crisis, which plunged Pakistan in violence and disorder could have been averted had the general elections been transparent and the then Prime Minister ZA Bhutto and the Pakistan National Alliance (PNA) had prioritised the interests of the country rather than their own political objectives. The country could have been saved from what turned out to be longest spell of martial law in the country. Pakistan lacked strategic crisis management to deal with the 1977 crisis. Finally, the role of policy-oriented think tanks and academia is pivotal in inculcating the concept of strategic crisis management at the institutional and individual level. When a critical mass is created to deal with a crisis situation in a strategic manner, one can expect its proper management. This critical mass so far is lacking in Pakistan.
