Andhra Pradesh government sanctions Rs 489 crore for Muktyala lift irrigation scheme in NTR district

Vijayawada: In a significant boon for farmers of Nandigama and Jaggayyapet regions in the NTR district, the state govt has sanctioned Rs 489.28 crore for the construction of the Muktyala lift irrigation scheme, known as the Muktyala lift project. This project aims to provide irrigation water by lifting water from the Krishna River to about 40,000 acres of ayacut in the region. The Muktyala Lift Irrigation Scheme project is a long-pending dream and demand of the farmers of the Nandigama and Jaggayyapet regions. A foundation stone was laid for the construction of the project under the Vedadri lift irrigation scheme during the previous YSRCP govt. However, the construction of the irrigation project was stalled at an early stage due to unknown reasons. According to official records, a total of 38,627 acres of ayacut comes under the Muktyala lift project across various villages in the Nandigama and Jaggayyapet constituencies. Farmers who faced crop failures due to insufficient water have pinned their hopes on the completion of the project. Against this backdrop, sitting Jaggayyapet MLA Sriram Tataiah and Vijayawada MP Kesineni Sivanath promised the farmers of the region to complete the project. In this regard, they made multiple representations to irrigation minister Nimmala Rama Naidu and chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu explaining the essentiality of the lift scheme, leading the govt to sanction the amount for the project.

YSRCP alleges largest liquor scam in Andhra under Naidu govt

Amaravati, July 23 (PTI) YSRCP leader Peddireddi Ramachandra Reddy on Wednesday accused the Andhra Pradesh government of orchestrating the 'country's largest-ever liquor scam" under Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. Speaking to media after visiting his son and Rajampet MP Mithun Reddy in Rajamahendravaram central jail, he alleged that the TDP-led government has revived illicit liquor trade, turning Andhra Pradesh into 'Madhyandhra Pradesh" (alcoholic state) rife with corruption. 'The ruling coalition government is orchestrating the largest liquor scam in the country's history and plunging Andhra Pradesh into a state of corruption and mismanagement," said Ramachandra Reddy, addressing a press conference. The previous YSRCP government ensured that liquor sales were tightly regulated through government-run outlets, which led to a significant reduction in sales while increasing state revenue by Rs 25,000 crore annually, pointed out Ramachandra Reddy. He claimed that revenue from liquor sales during previous TDP regime, between 2014 to 2019, was only Rs 17,000 crore despite logging higher sales. The former minister alleged that under the present Naidu dispensation, liquor privatisation, retail price violations, door deliveries and belt shops (unlicensed liquor shos) have allegedly made a comeback. The YSRCP leader condemned the registration of what he termed as 'false" cases against party leaders, comparing the TDP-led government to Taliban rule. He alleged that Mithun Reddy is being denied legal jail amenities and warned of legal action if statutory facilities are not ensured for jailed representatives. Meanwhile, there was no immediate reaction from the ruling TDP. PTI MS STH ROH view comments First Published: July 23, 2025, 19:45 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. The order has cleared the path for the re-investigation announced earlier by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in the Uday Bhaskar, also known as Ananta Babu, represents Kakinada in the Legislative Council and is a prominent YSRCP leader. He had allegedly murdered his former driver, Veedhi Subrahmanyam, a Dalit, during an altercation in May 2022 and attempted to stage the death as a road accident. According to police records, on the night of May 19, 2022, Ananta Babu and Subrahmanyam got into an argument, during which the legislator allegedly pushed him. The initial push caused Subrahmanyam to fall and sustain a head injury. The legislator then transported the body to Subrahmanyam's house and told the family he had died in a vehicular mishap. The family, however, noticed the suspicious injuries and refused to accept the explanation. A confrontation ensued, following which Ananta Babu left, abandoning the body in his a complaint from the family, Ananta Babu was arrested, and the YSRCP suspended him from the party. However, as the investigation officer failed to submit a charge sheet within 90 days, he was released on default bail in December coming to power last year, the TDP-led coalition government ordered a fresh investigation into the case in April.
