Pakistan's IT sector surges with 24% export growth, $2.4bn trade surplus
This growth added a much-needed boost to the country's external sector, as IT and IT-enabled services (ITeS) recorded a $2.4 billion trade surplus – the highest among all service industries.
Freelancers played a notable role in the sector's performance, contributing $400 million in foreign exchange earnings, underlining the increasing relevance of the digital gig economy in Pakistan.
The momentum continued into March 2025, when ICT exports reached $342 million, up from $305 million in February, marking a 12.1% month-on-month increase and an 11.7% year-on-year growth from March 2024.
To support and sustain this upward trend, the government is expanding digital infrastructure and promoting entrepreneurship. The Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) has initiated the rollout of 250 e-Rozgaar centers by FY2027, aiming to create 20,000 jobs and support freelance work and startup culture.
Fifty centers are expected to be operational by the end of FY2025.
Additionally, over 1,900 startups have been incubated under the National Incubation Centers (NICs), with 960 graduating successfully.
These ventures have generated over 185,000 jobs, attracted Rs30.8 billion in investments, and reported combined revenues of Rs27.3 billion. Over 12,000 women entrepreneurs have been empowered through these initiatives, reflecting the sector's contribution to inclusive growth.
On the telecom front, the sector generated Rs803 billion in revenues during July–March FY2025, while contributing Rs271 billion to the national treasury through taxes and duties. Total subscriptions reached 199.9 million, pushing teledensity to 81.3%.
The sector's expansion is being supported by international collaboration, including a Joint Working Group (JWG) with China, focusing on ICT infrastructure, cybersecurity, innovation, and regulatory frameworks.

Minister asks to build N-25 as an expressway
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal directed concerned stakeholders to complete the Karachi-Chaman National Highway (N-25) into a high-standard expressway project by August 2027 and exert all their efforts in making it a landmark development milestone for the country. Calling for immediate completion of required formalities, the planning minister has directed the National Highways Authority (NHA) that the groundbreaking ceremony be scheduled for August 14, 2025. Iqbal, Monday, chaired a meeting with Ministry of Communications, NHA and Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) officials to review the progress of the N-25 project. During the meeting, the NHA officials briefed the minister on the project's status, highlighting that the dualisation of the Hub Bypass had been added to the revised PC-1 project, following the Minister for Communications' recommendation on June 20th. The revised PC-1 is expected to be submitted by July 2nd, they stated. Calling the N-25 a critical route for transportation between Sindh and Balochistan and a potential gateway for Central Asia, Minister Iqbal reaffirmed its potential to uplift the socioeconomic development of Balochistan. Earlier, in line with the minister's directives, NHA had invited bids from state-owned enterprises (SOEs) on June 17th, with bid opening scheduled on July 2nd. The Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) provided an update on the project's progress, stating that work is being carried out in four sections. Notably, 68 per cent of the work on the 51km stretch from Jiwa to Surab has already been completed. Calling for immediate completion of required formalities, the planning minister directed the NHA that the groundbreaking ceremony be scheduled for August 14, 2025. He also reviewed plans for construction of service areas along the expressway and emphasised the need for well-designed facilities catering to the needs of truckers. 'Well-equipped service areas should be constructed on both sides of the expressway, providing rest areas, fuel pumps, restaurants, vehicle workshops, and other essential amenities,' he stressed. The minister further directed that input be taken from representatives of truck companies to determine ideal locations for these service areas. Among the mini service areas to be constructed along the expressway, some of them should be larger, offering comprehensive services to truckers, stated the minister. Expressing concern over security, the minister stated that 42 FWO workers lost their lives during the construction of N-85. He emphasised the need for strict security measures and conveyed this to the Balochistan government, stressing that Gwadar city and N-85 must be secured under all circumstances. The minister also advised that a dedicated security force be established for N-25, with security deployment aligned with the work schedule. Furthermore, the planning minister emphasised the importance of considering potential future expansion of expressway lanes due to increased regional connectivity. 'Considering flow of traffic in the next few decades, the development of this expressway must be executed in a way that it's easier to expand it into six lanes, whenever needed in future,' stated the minister. Pakistan's headline inflation clocked in at 3.2% on a year-on-year basis in June 2025, a reading lower than that of May 2025, when it stood at 3.5%, showed Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) data on Tuesday. On month-on-month basis, it increased by 0.2% in June 2025, as compared to a decrease of 0.2% in the previous month and an increase of 0.5% in June 2024. In May 2023, the CPI inflation rate hit a record high of 38%. However, it has been on a downward trajectory since then. The CPI reading is in line with the government's expectations. The Finance Ministry in its monthly economic report expected inflation to ease to a range between 3-4% in June. 'On the external front, higher remittances and exports will continue to keep the current account in surplus for FY 2025,' read the monthly outlook. Earlier, the Economic Survey 2024-25 noted that inflation is projected to remain within the range of 4.5-5% during FY25, supported by a sharp decline in the prices of perishable food items and adequate stocks of key non-perishable commodities. Meanwhile, the latest CPI reading was also in line with the projections made by several brokerage houses. JS Global projected Pakistan's headline inflation to lower to 3.1% in June. 'Following a 3.5% YoY reading in May 2025, the CPI is expected to be at 3.1% YoY in June 2025. The base effect is now fading, signalling a return to normalised price trends,' said JS Global. Meanwhile, Insight Securities, another brokerage house, expected headline inflation to clock in at 3.2% in June. Urban, rural inflation The PBS said CPI inflation urban decreased to 3% on year-on-year basis in June 2025, as compared to 3.5% of the previous month and 14.9% in June 2024. On month-on-month basis, it remained stable at 0.1% in June 2025, as compared to 0.1% in the previous month and 0.6% in June 2024. CPI inflation rural increased by 3.6% on year-on-year basis in June 2025, as compared to an increase of 3.4% in the previous month and 9.3% in June 2024. On month-on-month basis, it increased by 0.5% in June 2025, as compared to a decrease of 0.5% in the previous month and an increase of 0.3% in June 2024
